What kind of card sleeves do you use?  What brand and type has proven to be the most reliable for you (no split edges, don't wear out easily, etc.)?  What do you recommend as the best sleeves on the market?

I almost exclusively use the crazy Japanese sleeves, and they've been pretty awesome for me.  I started using Gunmetal (Yamato I think) sleeves not too long ago and they're amazing.  The 1/4" lip at the top does a great job of making sure dirt doesn't get down onto the cards, and the sleeves grip the cards really tight, so they don't slide up and down and stick out.  My only wish is that they were a bit thicker.

Gunmetals are the best hands down, since they actually do a good job at protecting your cards.

Here in Italy GunMetals are really hard to find. However those who have tried them say they are the best too.

I've never been a real fan of Gunmetals. There's so much hanging off the top of the card that I manage to split them more often than Dragon Shields or something. The tops also have a tendency to get all bent and look really crappy in my opinion.

Personally I'm fine with either Dragon Shields or Japanese sleeves. Both keep cards from poking out unless you violently shake them upside-down or something, and they shuffle really nicely.

Slightly off topic, but where does everyone get their play mats from? I'd like to pick one up, but even Google only finds sites where the mats are either out of stock or $75 collectors items. I've searched the site and all I can find are broken links. Anyone?

I've never had a gunmetal break. I've tried the japanese sleeves, but gunmetal is seriously where it's at.

I noticed that some new ones I got don't mix at all with my old ones, though.

It was easy for me to get gunmetals online. Many sites have them. They are high quality and I am really satisfied with them.

The playmats were a lot harder to find. Khalsa Brain Games makes three different really cool mats (Bram uses one of these), but their site is out of stock and so are most other peoples. The site I got mine from only had one left when I ordered it. I would try looking in toy stores or something, since you will probably have a lot more selection IRL.

[EDIT: Jacob - did your new ones come in 75ct packs? I noticed several sites stopped carrying the 100ct ones. Are they noticeably different?]

Playmats - Troll and Toad carries the nice grey ones, with art by Ed Beard, Jr.  The $75 ones you're referring to must be the long out-of-print Official Magic mats.  They're collector's items now, although Troll and Toad (again) does have a few.  for $75.  The grey ones are about $15, and I'm very satisfied with mine.

Sleeves - I'm a fan of the Neo-blue MaxPro ones, mostly due to the look.  They wear after a month or so to the point where I feel like replacing them, but it isn't necessary until about 2 months.  But I'm a pretty tolerant guy about sleeve wear, you may want to change them a week earlier or so.

I will break into your house while you aren't home and disguise myself as a chair. Then I will leave before you get home, but there will be a place at your table where I was a chair and you will wonder why there isn't a chair there. Then later I will leave the chair disguise on your doorstep and you will realize what has happened and you will be afraid all the time. Helter Skelter mother fuckers!

DragonShield Purple or KMC Super Blue...

I have used Gunmetals on occasion, they work pretty well, but don't shuffle as well as the Dragonshields. Plus, Purple 'Shields look damn hot.

I bought 4 packs of Gunmetals recently and the new ones don't mix with the old ones.  Despite this they're still the best sleeves by far.

Also, I sleeve my Type Four deck in gunmetals and, even with that kind of wear, I've never broken a sleeve.

gunmetals split, but not as often as KMC sleeves
the new ones are of a different size cf the older ones, but if you're hardworking you can take a razor to them and even them all out
i know that's what i did  Smile

I usually use KMC Super Black/Red or Gunmetal, depending on how many newer ones I have for that day.

Me neither, they hardly break if you handle them decently.
It is true that different packages are hard to mix. Some are slightly larger/smaller, in my experience (60 packs)

The problem I've found with Gunmmetal is that some of the backs are half dark and half light black.

I actually tried to rip a Gunmetal before, and all I did was stretch it.  They're nearly indestructable unless you're trying to kill them.

gunmetal

As to play mats you can go to a fabric store and by really cool fabrics and all you have to do is hem it which you can do by hand or find someone with a machine to do (takes 5 minutes).
