Designed to fill common wizard slot (Assuming set needs are up to date)

Prodigal Apprentice
2U
Creature - Wizard
You may play Prodigal Apprentice anytime you can play an instant.
When Prodigal Apprentice comes into play, return target permanent to it's owner's hand.
1/1

I like this either as bounce or twiddle, obv. adjusted mana cost to account for 1/1 body...this /might/ be too good for a common, but def. not swingy enough for a rare, I dont think.

Current Wording

Prodigal Apprentice
2U
Creature - Human Wizard
You may Play Prodigal Apprentice anytime you can play an instant.
When Prodigal Apprentice comes into play, return target nonland permanent to its owner's hand.

This is pretty ridiculous at instant speed. Even without that, it can still hit their 2nd land if you're going first, which can be huge.

hmmm... Agreed.

What about the following adjustments..

Prodigal Apprentice
2U
Creature - Wizard
1U, T: Return target nonland permanent to its owner's hand.
1/1

Brings into check the comes into play ability, plus with it being a Tap ability, it flavorfully pays homage to its namesake, Prodigal Sorcerer. but also keeps in line with his underpowered cousin, Temporal Adept, since it is now nonland

Your second version would be insane in limited.  Repeated bouncing should not be splashable.

I know this won't happen in a tournament, but if my opponent has Chaos Orb in his hand while I'm controlling his turn from a Mindslaver, who flips the card if I force him to play it and activate it?

You should make it:
Prodigal Apprentice 1UU
When ~ comes into play, return target non-land permanent to its owners hand.
You may play ~ any time you could play an instant.
1/1 Uncommon
-----------------
This is still good, but not really insane because it's really not reusable or very spashable, however I could still see it being played in some control and it would be a nice pick in limited.

Or you could keep it at 2U and make it return creatures only.

Meh, you're right.  But the instant speed functions as an anti-falter in Limited, since this would remove two attackers from combat.

Why not stick with the original plan?

Prodigal Apprentice
2U
Creature - Wizard
You may play Prodigal Apprentice anytime you can play an instant.
When Prodigal Apprentice comes into play, return target non-land permanent to it's owner's hand.

Your second version is really similar to Temporal Adept

Temporal Adept
1UU, Creature - Wizard 1/1
{U}{U}{U}, {T}: Return target permanent to its owner's hand.

And it's almost even stronger (even if it cannot bounce lands)  Confused  I would stick with the comes-into-play effect.

updated initial post to include suggested changes that i agree with, and could see fitting the criteria.
