What is 3cb?

3-Card Blind (3CB) is a very unique game. The rules are as follows

Your deck is composed of 3 cards, all of which start in your hand.
You have no library (technically, the library exists, but starts at 0 cards) and no sideboard (Wishes fetch nothing).
Random effects always go in your opponent's favour.
You can see your opponent's hand, so you can always make the best possible play.
You don't lose as a result of not being able to draw a card.
You will play each opponent twice, once going first, once going second.
For each win, you score 3.
For each draw, you score 1.
For each lose, you get nothing.
Other than the aforementioned, EVERYTHING IS HANDLED EXACTLY LIKE A REAL GAME OF MAGIC!

To make an entry, PM your deck to wonkey_donkey in the following format:

Subject: 3cb Tournament #47 Entry or 3cb Tournament#47 Revision
Deck Name
Card #1
Card #2
Card #3

Optional Deck discussion, random sucking up, etc.

I'll close entries after 2 weeks. Get your entries in by 23rd December and I'll calculate. As I said, the banned list may change within 48 hours of this post going up. After that, it stays as it is. This is not a reason to withold your decks, though - this is not a particuarly serious format! If something's broke, please fix it whilst we can!

Well, the special format's over and the idea of keeping lotus was not fantastic. Format itself was cool, but the lotus meant too many 3-3s. I may go for the same thing next tournament, except with no lotus? Alternatively, let's hear some suggestions for next special format sooner rather than later. Let me know.

Results up later today or tomorrow.

As a special format, how about Type Four 3CB?

You have infinite mana, 1 spell per turn.

Obviously, we'd have to figure out a (probably extensive!) ban-list, but it might definately be fun for the timmys among us, and the people who wouldn't mind being one for a change (like myself).

The ban list would need to be incredibly extensive...very cool idea in principle, but we'd need to prepare it a week or two in advance, I would guess.

I don't know about it needing to be so extensive. That was the philosophy of the previous 3CB mass banned list, and it didn't work so well. I think that this is one of the formats where there will be enough inherent brokenness (sp?) to balance out, provided we get the list right. You've got 3 threat cards of some description, so most people will have an answer for potential problems.

I agree that preparation is needed though. If we can get it done for next time, then the next tournament will be a T4 3CB to make up for the slightly anticlimatic previous one. <3 the idea, btw.

You might want to ban Unhinged Smile

We did a T4-style 3CB once, back in March. Here was our ban list:

Banned cards:

All of Unglued (+Unhinged, now)
All ante cards
Any card that forces your opponent to discard more than 1 card a turn.
The Rack
Balance
Strip Mine
Wasteland
Blackmail
Cabal Therapy
Mesmeric Fiend
Meddling Mage
Show and Tell

Banned Decks:
*Any deck that can feasibly force your opponent to discard more than 1 card a turn. (The word force here is important. Mind Bomb is still legal, unless combined with Mindslaver )
*Any deck that can feasibly win on the first turn.

T4-centric stuff

Decree of Silence
Spelljack
Desertion
Mystic Snake
Funeral Charm
Forbid
Fervent Denial
All Spells with an X anywhere on them
(and Capsize should have been banned for this)

Banned Decks:
*Any deck with more than one counterspell in it

The results to that are Here. The brokenness evened itself out. But then again, a few sets have been released since then (well, only 5D and ChK... but still...)

My list is probably far from perfect, but then again, I'd never played a real game of T4 at that point.

I think anything with infinite mana is going to cause some severe problems unless there's a specific rule in place to govern how these effects are handled. Cards like Mmenarch force people to have countermagic, and when you are forced to have countermagic the decks basically turn into who goes first (so they can play there second threat).

I think almost every deck is going to be...

Threat, Threat, Counter/Removal

So it comes down to who gets to go first.

I'd just like to apologise for the lack of results from 3CB#46. I have very little time on my hands at the moment, and subsequently haven't managed to get them into the right format. When I find some time, I'll put them up asap afterwards.

I would like to make a suggestion for the future. At the close of a particular 3CB Tournament, would it be possible for you to post the decklists? I'm more interested in the innovation than the actual results and it might take some of the (much appreciated!) work off you as people could volunteer to do some of the calculations for you.

That's a fair suggestion. As I say, calculating is not the most time-consuming of ventures - it's getting the results up! I'll still post a table with the decklists, but with less gloss, so to speak. That's a fantastic idea from my perspective, certainly, and one I will most likely follow up unless there are any objections to it.

Oh, and second decks are now legal. We've got very few entrants for this one, but hopefully there are a few more to come - it doesn't take 2 minutes to submit, so get on with it everyone!
