Castricum Coverage 12-12-2004

We as the Eindhoven crew attending (Me, Pyromaniac, BigMac, Limbo and Bram) decided
we would play wacky decks again and fuck up Sylvan's stats. I guess it worked out pretty
well for us, with me going 6-0, and Pyro going 5-0-1.

61 players attending, 6 rounds of swiss.

1 Rudy van Soest, DracoPlosion (rvs) (6-0)
2 Hero 't Mannetje, Highlander control (Pyromaniac) (5-0-1)

6 Willem Helder, Oath (4-1-1)
7 Erik Hoekstra, Oath (4-1-1)
8 Leon Kusters, KoboldClamp (Limbo) (4-1-1)

In general, the metagame was a little better than we first thought (castricum is known for
having a rather 'unusual' metagame, and there were like 11 or 12 Oath decks present. Most
other big archetypes were represented as well with a few players.

I'll try to write up a Q'n'D report this afternoon when I have more time.

As a sneak preview, other than being playing the coolest deck which is next to impossible
to effectively hate (barring oathing up Ancestor's Chosen!), I also won 6 die rolls. How Lucky!
I have to say though that 3 times I did in fact still manage to lose game 1 Smile

Also, I expect waterbury to be won by Meandeck DracoPlosion, since Steve had Bram call me on the car-ride home if he could have the list Wink
Well Steve, since I aim to please, here ya go!

Quick and dirty tournament report Castricum 12-12-2004

Well, sometime during the last Eindhoven tournament we decided to go and play wacky decks ac Castricum, just for the fun of t. We talked to some other people(Koen, Arthur etc.) and they generally agreed that it was a good/fun idea. So we started coming up with wacky decks.

Rudy decided he wanted to play Draco-Plosion and I picked up Highlander Control, just for the fun of it. We also tried out some other decks, but they were too bad or too good. The testing sessions were filled with weird plays and as the tourney grew nearer, we became more and more confident in our abilities with the decks. In the end I decided to play Highlander, Rudy Draco-Plosion, Marco came up with a weird B/W deck with Fastbond and Zur’s Weirding and Bram picked up Kroathan with Dosan something…

Fast forward to the event. After arriving, we were the first to arrive but soon the place started filling up and we ended up with 61 players, good enough to annoy dr. Sylvan if we got high results. The decklist I used is as follows:

Highlander control

Blue
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Time Walk
1 Deep Analysis
1 Fact or Fiction
1 Thirst for Knowledge
1 Impulse
1 Mystical Tutor
1 Mana Drain

1 Mana Leak
1 Merchant Scroll
1 Tinker
1 Morphling

1 Skeletal Scrying
1 Yawgmoth's Will
1 Mind Twist
1 Duress

White
1 Balance
1 Swords to Plowshares
1 Exalted Angel
1 Dismantling Blow
1 Orim's Chant

Red
1 Gorilla Shaman

Multicolor
1 Fire/Ice
1 Goblin Trenches

Artifact
1 Mind's Eye
1 Isochron Scepter
1 Mirari
1 Memnarch
1 Darksteel Collosus

Mana Sources
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Ruby
1 Black Lotus
1 Mana Crypt
1 Sol Ring
1 Strip Mine
1 Wasteland
1 Library of Alexandria
1 Tolarian Academy
1 Polluted Delta
1 Flooded Strand
1 Windswept Heath
1 Bloodstained Mire
1 City of Brass
1 Gemstone Mine
1 Undiscovered Paradise
1 Glimmervoid
1 Tundra
1 Underground Sea
1 Volcanic Island
1 Tropical Island
1 Island
1 Swamp
1 Plains

Sideboard
1 Rack and Ruin
1 Echoing Truth
1 Hydroblast
1 Red Elemental Blast
1 Pyroblast
1 Hurkyll's Recall
1 Wrath of God
1 The Abyss
1 Coffin Purge
1 Platinum Angel
1 Smother
1 Scrying Glass
1 Disenchant
1 Circle of Protection:Red
1 Aura Fracture

First round: mono black Megrim something

He didn’t start off too well and I quickly gained the upper hand. All he had was a Lotus Petal and a Mox Diamond, so Tinker for Memnarch was the key play here. Not a lot to say. Game 2 was a bit better for him, even though I resolved first turn Scepter-StP. He lost to Will into brokenness and couldn’t do too much about it.

2-0, 1-0

Second round: Oath

Yuck, one of the worst matchups. Not as bad as combo, but still pretty bad. Game 1 is almost a bye for them if they get a reasonable start. I somehow managed to briefly gain control in game 1, before losing to Oath. Game 2 was all Aura Fracture. I resolved it and from that moment on it was pretty easy. We couldn’t finish game 2 due to time being called, but we were fairly evenly matched.

1-1-1, 1-0-1

Thirth round: Oath

Dammit, another Oath matchup. This went a lot better though. Game 1 he mulled to 5, and first turn Duress and Ancestral on my part didn’t make it better. Game 2 was kinda weird, because I quickly got out Scepter-Chant, but he still managed to get me to –2. Thank god for Plowing my token and Oathing up Platinum Angel before that happened.

2-0, 2-0-1

Fourth round: Oath

WTF?!? Is everyone playing Oath today? Well, as it seemed, not a lot of people, but most of the people at the top tables were. Game 1 was over pretty quickly, as I killed his Oath, only to find another one and get my ass handed to me. Game 2 was over just as quickly, because Fracture just owns Oath. Game 3 took a while longer. He cast an Oath without Orchard, I countered his 2nd one, then disenchanted the first and he still didn’t have an Orchard. In the end I resolved Will which gave me enough gas to ride it out.

2-1, 3-0-1

Fifth round: Oath

OMGWTFBBQ?!?!?!?! I just couldn’t believe this: Oath AGAIN? Oh well, so far I was doing pretty well vs it and I didn’t really fear the matchup all that much any more, only to be shown wrongly. Game 1 was all in his favor. Game 2 was in my favor. His hand wasn’t spectacular and while he put up a good fight, I got Scepter-Disenchant followed by Will for brokenness. Game 3 all he had was turn 1 Orchard, Oath with nothing to back it up, while I had turn 1 Library, double mox and Disenchant. I beat down for a few turns with my tokens(all 3 of them), them Walk, Will, Walk for the win.

2-1, 4-0-1

Sixth and final round: Goblin Sligh

It seems like he was able to circumvent all of the Oath decks so far, seeing he was up there. Rudy was at table 1 and me at 2, so we had a chance to 1-2 this event. If we’d been forced to play each other, I’d have scooped to him so he’d be 6-0. We didn’t face each other though, so it was ok.

I won the die roll for the 2nd time today and went Island, Mox, go. Leaked his Lackey, the lotus, land, Mind Twist for 4. The stopped him almost ead in his tracks, but he had another Lackey. I luckily topdecked a Will, so I replayed Twist for the last 2 cards in his hand: Piledriver and another goblin, phew. After this he drew land for 2 turns, I killed his Lackey, he played double Fanatic and I Tinkered for Collosus.

Game 2 was sorta memorable. I looked at my hand which had Lotus, Mox, The Abyss and Tinker. Nothing else. I decided to keep so if he went dude go, I could Tinker for Collosus and otherwise, if he left REB mana available, I could cast Abyss. He choose the dude go approach, which definitely is the best, and I Tinkered  for turn 1 Collosus. He died 3 turns later, after his Goblin Goon chumped for 1 turn.

2-0, 5-0-1

SAVAGE!! “Crappy” decks can win. Rudy won his Oath matchup too, so he was 6-0, and I was 5-0-1 so we came in first and second. What better way to annoy people Smile I had a lot of fun with the deck and I’ll probably play it there again. I’ll just switch out Mirari for a Scroll Rack, cause that’s the nuts in our limited testing. I couldn’t find one in time though.

Also note how someone came in third with The Tinker Deck.

Did any of you face him?

Since I didn't take any notes and just have my life-total papers and memory to write this from, I'll do a Q'n'D report of my Explosions:

For the intro read Pyro's piece, for the list, scroll up.

Round 1: Hugo van Dijke, Stax
He sits down and starts complaining how he will probably lose to me because I guess he expects me to play a good deck. Well, I sure hope he was happy that I did go broken on him anyway after winning the die-roll. I'm not sure what happened exactly, but it went something along the lines of Lotus, Ancestral, Brainstorm, Time Walk, Fetch, drop Crypt + mox, brainstorm again, Cunning Wish for Shattering Pulse and set up for turn 2 16 dmg in his face, putting him on 3. And then I think he took some CoB damage while I took some crypt damage, and at some point I fired him. Round 2 was the opposite where I kept a risky hand with Walk, Fow, Twister and Sol Ring, Mox emmy and some land. He drops t1 trinisphere off 3 moxen, and I force it, twistering during my own turn. I draw random crap, while he drops like ALL his acceleration heh as in his deck on the table, and plays I think a Trinisphere. During my turn I tinker into Collosos, but he manages to topdeck Platinum Angel and cast it, and I'm locked at that point by chalice on 2 and chalice on 3.
Game 3 featured more insanity from my side where I tinker for collosos turn 1 off a lotus and a mox, while he only manages to drop a trinisphere and a jar, which is all too late. I had a fow on the ready with 3 mana in case he dropped platinum or duplicant or something.

So, round 2 was against Dirk Biesheuvel, playing 4cc.

Game 1 I start off slowly, but manage to combo him on turn 4 with protection, after he fetched and forces, putting him to 1. Then he drops a monkey, which almost eats my whole board, but I had a volcanic in hand to cast the topdecked fire when I needed it. At this point however, it seems like he's playing some control-slaver variant, so I sideboard for that.
in game 2 however I quicly get out a collosos, and he gets out an angel after walk, will, walk, draw some cards etc. However, he attacks at some point, putting him back at 11, and drops another morph to block my collosos I guess. I had a force for it though, so I got to kill him exactly. If he hadn't attacked with his 1st angel, he might have pulled it out in the end. I guess it wasn't meant to be for him...

Round 3 against Marco, bigmac, with rector-tendrils.

We always seem to get paired round 3, and we consider ID-ing again. However, we both also concluded that 5-0-1 might not ensure the victory today, so we figure we play it out, and if it's 1-1, we could reconsider our position.
However, he is mana-light and I combo him pretty quickly,  and then at some point he just concedes I think.
Game 2 is a little more of the same. I keep a hand full of counters and manage to control his again mana-light position.
He tells me I should better win the whole shebang now, so I tell him I will accomodate him. Like I said, I aim to please Surprised

Round 4 against Patrick Sneevliet, with affinity
Game 1 I get stuck with a Shivan reef through 3 brainstorms and a TFK (with the help of a Mana Vault) until I finally find a Mox Sapphire to do nothing of relevance with the turn he kills me.
Game 2 he shuffles so I see his sideboarded in Diabolic Edict. How funny. I did side in my FTK's though, since they're still pretty good. That game I just kill his dudes constantly with my fire and FTK's, and at some point I combo him twice.
Game 3 he keeps a pretty bad hand of Lotus Petal, Mana Vault, Clamp, Glimmervoid x2 and Academy. I force his Vault of the petal (thinking he had no other mana sources) and he then drops clamp. However, I go pretty insane with carddraw and find my Shattering Pulse and I totally wreck him. I quietly finish him off with FTK when he dropped a target for me to use it's drawba.... errr..... ability on Wink

Round 5 against Robbert van Outernaar with Gobbos.

I wonder how he managed to avoid all the Oath there was, but in any case, I guess I'm doomed to lose game 1 to him. I stretch it pretty long to the point where I can either drop collosos and fire some guys, or combo out and fire him, and in both scenarios, I'm 1 life short of killing him or staying alive myself. How annoying.
Game 2 I bait him with a brainstorm in his endstep, he rebs, and then I tinker up collosos to get an immediate scoop from Robbert.
Game 3 I have 2 fire/ice in hand and setup cards for the combo, so that's what happened.

Round 6 against Hans vd Schie with Oath

Finally I get to play an Oath deck, and I think I'm well prepared with my sideboard options. The game goes on for a while, but I manage to stop all of his oats, and his spirit toaken deals 5 dmg to him, and my Explosion seals the deal.
In game 2 exactly the same happened, although he did get an Oath out, but then he just didn't get a turn to oath up ancestors chosen to make life hard for me. I had the spirit for 4 turns to deal him 4 dmg, and with help of time walk and scroll rack I managed to combo him out.

So, in conclusion I can say that:

-The deck is actually quite good. I just had the idea to play it ever since the 1.x season where it was good, and I just tried to do it as effective as possible.
-This deck might actually be good enough to play seriously at a tournament. As you can see I didn't really play against any bad decks (although I agree affinity and gobbos aren't top tier, the rest pretty much were)
-Scroll rack is insane. Not just for putting Draco's on the top, but for making decks work. That card has been broken for me all day, and I think it deserves more looking into for control decks.
-I had a ton of fun getting people to read Erratic Explosion and shaking their heads over Draco. So good Smile
