Well well almost the end of the year. What movies did everyone see this year that really stood out. I'm not talking about what the Oscar winners will be and stuff, I'm talking about the movies that YOU really enjoyed, no matter how shitty or stupid they were.
For me, it was close, but I really really enjoyed Day After Tomorrow. What can I say, I'm a sucker for flashy special effects. The storyline itself wasn't even that bad (unlike The Core). I also loved the whole "what if" scenario. My pick for the year.
Honorable mention goes to Dawn of the Dead, for getting into the action right away without all this "storyline" fluff wasting the viewers time, and Anchorman and Dodgeball for actually making me laugh at the stupidest things.

I only rarely go to the theater, so I see most things when they hit DVD or if, while I'm home, it shows up on the subset of movie channels that my family gets. That said, of the ones that I've seen, Mean Girls, Spider-Man 2, and The Terminal were the cream of the crop.

Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle; hands down. I'll second that. Although Spiderman 2 was damn good. I thought white chicks was sorta funny too.

Winner- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Runners up- Napolean Dynomite Spiderman-2 Anchorman
Honorable Mention- the third Harry Potter movie; would have been with the others, 'cept it totally stole it's climactic scene from Princess Mononoke.
Saw it this year and would be on the list were it not released two years ago- The Believer.
Wallowing in it's own disgrace- Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle.

I loved Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Dodgeball was also good, but the movies are so different that they are hard to compare. I also didn't see Anchorman, which people have told me was better than Dodgeball.

Of the movies I've seen, I'd say that Eternal Sunshine, Kill Bill Vol. 2, and Hero are the ones that really deserve Oscars, but I haven't yet been able to see Closer and Phantom of the Opera isn't in theaters yet. I also really enjoyed Spiderman 2, Shuan of the Dead, and Blade Trinity but they aren't Oscar films.
Frankly, I'm really pissed off that so many epics were made this year and not a single one of them didn't suck. For example, the Iliad has survived as is for thousands of years. What makes Hollywood think that all of a sudden it needs to be changed in order to make people like it? I can't imagine the audacity for the scriptwriter for that film to think he's better than Homer.

Dunno. There were a ton of movies that I really liked (both from Hollywood and abroad), but none really jumped out as the best.
Rather than cheat and say Oldboy (which actually came out last year,) I will say Harold and Kumar.

Collateral was the best movie of a very lackluster year. Of course, I've only seen probably 30 new films this year (according to that website, I've recall seeing 26 of those), so my sample is a little small. This year sucked.
Honorable mentions include: Hidalgo and Hellboy.
The two movies I hoped would be better were Eternal Sunshine and Jarmuch's Coffee and Cigarettes. Both were ok, but not even close to as subtle and stunning as Collateral.

I didn't see as many movies this year as I would have liked, but...
I'd have to say that Garden State was the best I saw, followed closely by Napolean Dynamite.
I also liked The Village (I know a lot of people hated it) as well as Hero (which I think came out this year).

Most of the stuff that came out this year was pretty blah, but it seemed that when I liked something, I really really liked it. Spiderman 2, Harold and Kumar, Mean Girls, Dodgeball, The Terminal, Hidalgo, Eternal Sunshine, and Saved were all hella good. After the Sunset deserves a mention just based on how incredibly hot Salma Hayek looks. My favorite movie of the year though has to be Garden State.
It also should be noted that also released in 2004 was a movie that is among the absolute worst films of all time-- You Got Served.

I'm way behind on movies this year. I generally wait until the Oscar noms come out and then see everything on the list (like, every film that is nominated for anything), since most of the good films don't receive enough promotion (and aren't in theaters down in the wasteland of culture that is Terre Haute, IN). I tend to prefer DVD anyway, since I've got an amazing 50" DLP TV, Denon DVD player with DVI output and upconversion, and a rockin' sound system. The problem I get is that my roommates are uncultured heathens who think Cat in the Hat is a quality film experience, and have refused to watch an artistic movie with me since we watched Boys Don't Cry sometime last February. In fact, after that, they refused to watch any more of my films that they haven't heard of...
Hero was pretty amazing. I love the cinematography and the use of color thoughtout the film. I will be disappointed if it doesn't receive a nom for something other than editing, cinematography, sound, or best foreign film (it is a pretty good contender in each of those categories). The trouble is that the Chinese censors are pretty strict and only want films that make China look good, which includes all historical figures. The first emperor did do some good things, but he also did many terrible things, none of which you can gather from the film. Then again, Chinese censors did pull a commercial where LeBron James beats a traditional Chinese kung-fu master (or something like that) in basketball because they didn't want to depict a triumphant American.
Hidalgo had pacing problems and a general sense of lethargicness to it. It was better and more exciting than anything Ben Afflack's been in since Good Will Hunting, but that's not saying a heck of a lot.
It seems that this year was about as weak for films as last year, but there doesn't seem to be a heavyweight that will sweep the Oscars unlike last year. I suppose we can't always have another 2002 again (that was an amazing year for films) so soon.

Movies I enjoyed this year..
Coffee and Cigarettes, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (I saw it again and it wasn't very good..), Garden State, Maria Full of Miracles, Saved!, Spider-Man 2, The Terminal, Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself, Shaun of the Dead, Collateral.
I still need to see Kinsey and I heart Huckabees. I didn't think it was so bad a year. One good movie a month is more than enough for me.
The best made movie I thought was The Terminal. The pacing of it was just right for me. It also had an almost perfect length. Yay for good direction.

I assume Maria Full of Miracles is the same thing as Maria Full of Grace? I didn't like that movie because every scene just ended without resolution. Also, the story was nothing particularly special. It was basically an episode of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.
I need to see Garden State. A bunch of people have said it was really good, and I heard part of the soundtrack which was good, too.

What did you like about [Coffee and Cigarettes]? I liked that some of the skits were pretty clever, like the one where the two guys in it decided that quitting smoking made it so they could feel free to have a cigarette. Also, both coffee and cigarettes are enormously popular on the University of Chicago campus (and I would presume on most college campuses), so the movie appealed to me as a college student as well.

I've seen more incredibly bad movies this year than any other. Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, The Bourne Supremacy, The Chronicles Of Riddick to name but a few. Puke material.
As for decent movies: Dodgeball (seriously lame & funny slapstick), Collateral (decent acting, exciting story), The Butterfly Effect (interesting idea), Dawn of the Dead (decent remake), King Arthur (cool take on the legened...DVD version is much better), Hidalgo (just plain looks good), I, Robot (fairly OK sci-fi), Hellboy (unexpectedly cool superhero thing), Kill Bill 2 (never really liked #1 but this at least kinda made up for it), Skycaptain (innovative art direction)...all decent but none spectacular.
Only 2 producations stand out in an otherwise VERY mediocre year:
The Incredibles The Ladykillers
Oh, and a must-see dutch arthouse horror production: The Texel Fretsaw Massacre.

Whenever I see a movie that is supposed to be exciting but isn't, I usually think of Ben Affleck, since he is Mr. Lethargic. Coincidentally, many of the films that are supposed to be exciting but aren't feature Mr. Affleck... Paycheck anyone? How about Daredevil?

I've seen it 4 times, but two of those times were $2 movie nights at the Bruin theatre. The thing about Garden State is- it really had the potential to become our The Graduate but gets bogged down by bad cinematography and an inability to let the movie end where it wants. The soundtrack is pretty badass- the Frou Frou song on there is amazing, and the remake of Such Great Heights is wonderous.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was amazing. (My favorite movie this year.) Garden State was also awesomes. (mm, the Postal Service. Natalie Portman. So good.) Spiderman 2 and Harry Potter 3 were better than their prequels. Hero is beautiful, but feels longer than it should because it likes to repeat itself. Hidalgo wished it was as good as Seabiscuit.
Closer is terrible. Don't see it. Alexander is worse. National Treasure is pretty bad, too.
Has anyone seen Phantom of the Opera yet?
