Oh man, this thing is going to be SWEET! CO will be bringing 8 peeps to this thing. It'll be Me, Godot, Scott Limoges, Big Mike, Chris D, Lou, Travis, and someone else. Hopefully we'll get the same turnout as the last P9 tourney in Chicago. Who else is going? Where's everyone staying? I dunno about the rest of ya'll, but there'll def. be some partying before and after this tourney.

This will be the first SCG P9 that I don't attend.  I was going to just ironman the trip by car with The Brass Man, but low funding and low attention span suggests I should be doing otherwise.

Best of luck to those heading out, but in particular I'm going to cheer on JuggernautGO and godot.  Rock the house, guys.

I had asked Matt a question via the star city boards about the proxies and I though everyone might want to see the reply:

Quote
Dante77 wrote:
I had a question about the proxies...If we're proxying a card with a lot of text on it (old man of the sea, Chains of Mephistopheles, etc), is it enough to simply clearly write out the card name, casting cost, and power/toughness (for creatures) on the proxy and keep a printout (from a printer not hand-written) of the oracle card text with us for reference if it gets played?

I know from past proxy tournaments, you usually can't read much anyway when hand-written on the card and this would be much easier for all involved.

Sure.

For proxies with a lot of text, this might be best.

Updates!

Kevin is 3-1.

The metagame is almost exclusively Control and Combo. He said there were maybe like 2 workshop aggro, almost no fish, about 10 stacks decks, and the rest are all control and combo facing off. Josh Reynolds is playing Tog, but virtually no one else is. It's mostly Oath and Control Slaver.

Jeff Anand is undefeated with Control Slaver, I guess BrassMan just lost with Gifts Belcher (unsure if it's his first or second), Kowal I think is still in it, and there may have been one or two more NE people there.

Apparently there are like 10 or so people from Minnesota/NW Wisconsin playing Kobold Clamp, but only a few are still in contention.

Oh, and there's some landstill.

More updates as they appear on the meandeck forums for me to copy/paste!

More updates from Kowal:

kowal 6-0-1, will draw in
he played against:
round 1: random real deck
round 2: oath
sligh round 5 table 1
gilded claw
something with: bazaar, smokestack, tormod's crypt, riftstone portal, AI, workshop, volc, great furnace, welder, shaman, chalice, wheel, crucible, strips, no force, uba mask, citanul flute. The guy might t8, if not Kowal will get his list directly.

GWS, ICBM doing not great

anand had a feature match, is currently 5-1-1
cron unintentional draw, will have to win out
andy scrubbed out of main AND side events
finals of side event door to nothingness/celestial dawn COMBO vs 13nova
windfall scoops to demars, who is therefore in.

154 people at the beginning of the day

edit: bonus extra info from Kevin:
Josh Reynolds is X-1 with Tog. Roland is out.

[20:55] Smmenen:  top 8 is
[20:55] Smmenen: brian demars
[20:55] Smmenen: carp
[20:55] Smmenen: robort roman
[20:55] Smmenen: either anand or ben carp
[20:55] Smmenen: or brian fisher or jesse river
[20:55] Smmenen: tom wee
[20:55] Smmenen: kowal
[20:55] Smmenen: luke owazawa
[20:56] Smmenen: kevin will be 9th placve
[20:56] Jacob 0rlove: you're sure?
[20:56] Smmenen: kevin is mostly sure
[20:56] Smmenen: becuase of his tiebreakers
[20:56] Smmenen: i'm talking to him now
[20:58] Smmenen: there is a possibly he can make top 8

Correcting for cell phone misspellings:
Lee, Thomas
Kowal, Ben
Demars, Brian
ojala, luke
CARP, DAN
Vroman, Robert

Are all in

the following two matches are unfinished:
Jesse River vs Brian Fisher
Jeff Anand vs Ben Carp

Kevin's tiebreakers are going to be lower than any two winners in those matchups, so he only t8s if there's a draw.

Edit: Kevin is in 9th. Not sure who won the two matches yet, though.

The metagame breakdown is up on SCG: http://www.starcitygames.com/php/news/event/9438.html
It's premium, though, so I'll just offer a few highlights:

The top two decks, making up almost a quarter of the metagame, were slaver and oath, with emphasis on slaver.
Decks with Mana Drain made up about 40% of the meta, with Workshop about 15%, with Timetwister about 15%, and with Bazaar about 7%. 75% of the decks ran Force of Will.

For more stats, get premium!

Top 4 is almost set:
Ben Kowal (gifts belcher)
Jeff Anand (CS)
Brian Demars (???)

And the winner of the Dan Carp (Gilded Claw) vs Thomas Lee (salvagers oath) matchup. Dan lost game 1, but left in duplicant accidentally for game 2. Sadly for Thomas, he sided out the Salvagers combo for the regular oath kill, and Dup ate an Iridescent or something. They have 26 minutes left in the round (actually, probably more like 20 now).

Kowal beat that utterly random deck with the artificer's intuitions and uba masks, which actually made t8. For shame, Chicago. For shame. GWS, ICBM: this is why you can't have nice things.

Brian Demars is playing Oath. JP demanded to cover the Demars-Anand matchup, so that should be entertaining when it goes up (Demars is standing over here, so I don't think they've started the match yet).

I went 4-2 drop and have been typing up decklists and Top 8 interviews for the last few hours.

I see jeek finally gets to start his matchup database. Too bad there are only like 3 matchups with an adequate sample size.

edit: well, T8 decklists are up: http://www.starcitygames.com/php/news/event/9446.html

I linked the t8 lists in the post just above that one. They aren't even premium. Since you asked, though, the key features include Ancient Hydra, Chalice of the Void, Phyrexian Furnace, and Thirst for Knowledge, in addition to the Intuition/AK engine and standard Oath cards. It's a beating against Control Slaver.

For the record, Dan Carp IS a member of ICBM, and his brother ben had lost to anand in the last round.  So we had 2 still in contention.

Out of the 3 side events an ICBM member played in, we took home 1 library and 2 bazaars.

so 3 side finishes, and 1 top 8 isn't bad!

the side events were crappy, not in terms of prizes, but to get them...

it was $25 entry for an 8-man, single elimination for Bazaar or Library....

Andy and I ran more or less the same list as Kowal.  Andy went 0-2 drop and I ended up at 4-2-2, somewhere around 25-30th place.  I'd only picked up the deck 3 days ago and it showed when Jeff anad killed me in round 3.  I'll have a medium size-ish report up later....

The Josh Reynolds mentioned in this thread is not the Josh from Team Short Bus, he was head judge for a PTQ I attended in Richmond yesterday.

Jacob was copying my posts from the Mean Deck boards, it was Josh Franklin (who is in the same crew as Mark Biller and Brian Demars) from Michigan, not Josh Reynolds.  We met them all at the Columbus tournament, and I think Kevin was just getting the names mixed up.  I realized it after a while, but I guess that didn't get relayed.

Since there were multiple side events, I can only assume that Ben heard about two people making the finals and assumed it was in the same event.

the side events were $25, 8-man single elimination tournaments for either a Bazaar or Library.  What do others think about that...

I'd rather have a longer, 3-4 round side event with top 4 than a single elim...
