Enlightened Guildmage
1UW
Creature- Human Wizard
Protection from Creatures
If Enlightened Guildmage is attacking and unblocked you may pay U, if you do, return target creature to its owner's hand.
1/2
His fist promised freedom of the shackles
His eyes promised freedom of the mind
His words promised freedom of the spirit

My first card here, it pretty strong, I think.  I always felt UW Control needed a strong 2 or 3 drop to help fight off the incoming swarms, or UW aggro in any form could use an efficient tempo ihibiter for opposing aggro.  I want it to be very strong, not broken, but hopefully around Meddling Mage caliber, or the like.  The idea is pretty obvious I think, a wise old dude who "saves" creatures from their master, so to speak.  Its reminiscent of Finkel, ignoring the W and lack of B.

CURRENT WORDING

Enlightened Archmage
1UW
Creature- Human Wizard
1/2
Protection from Creatures
If Enlightened Guildmage is attacking and unblocked you may pay U, if you do, return target creature to its owner's hand and Enlightened Guildmage deals no combat damage this turn.
His hand promised freedom of the shackles; his eyes promised freedom of the mind; his words promised freedom of the spirit

Looks pretty much ok to me ^ ^

This guy would have to be rare, because he's a devastating limited card. For current constructed he's a little on the slow side, but in a friendlier environment he could be a good tempo-stealer against aggro, as you say.

That said, I wouldn't raise his stats any higher - at 2/2 he would be almost strictly better than the 1UU 2/2 unblockable guy, while at 1/3 he'd be a bit too hard for red to get rid of.

I would go ahead and make him a 1/1. He's strong enough as it is, but I do like this. I think the flavor text should say 'hand' instead of 'fist'.

It's certainly not identical, but I feel compelled to point out a similar card in the master list, Rishadan Slavers.

Rishadan Slavers
{3}{U}
Creature -- Pirate
2/3
Discard a card: Rishadan Slavers gains flying until end of turn.
Whenever Rishadan Slavers deals combat damage to a player, return target creature that player controls to its owner's hand.

They represent interesting facets of the same idea. Enlightened Guildmage has built-in evasion (really good evasion, at that), but has to pay a nominal fee to bounce a creature. Rishadan Slavers has to pay to get evasion, but only needs to deal combat damage in order to bounce. I think they might be better distinguished and Enlightened Guildmage would be somewhat more fair if Enlightened Guildmage removed itself from combat or didn't deal combat damage if its bounce ability is used. After all, unless it's taken out by a kill spell, there's almost no way that it could attack and be blocked (um -- [card]Dazzling Beauty[/card], [card]Trap Runner[/card] -- no, not even Trap Runner because it targets)

Did you know that Red is the color or art and music and passion? Combine that with Green, the color of nature, spiritualism, and community and you get a hippie commune of drum circles, dreamcatchers, and recreational drug use. Let's see that win a Pro Tour.

I can understand that, I am going to change it to remove him from combat, I forgot about that.

Is that Rishadan guy an actual card?  I never knew it if he was.  In any case, my logic behind the 1/2 P/T was "Lava Dart effects are "A Bad Thing"(tm)"(tm).

Do you think it really is that important to make him a 1/1 to balance him out?

And also, should I use "fist" or "hand" for the flavor text?  I switched it but I think fist sounds better.  Thoughts?

To me, it's fine-tuning. 1 damage burn is kinda rare, but 1 toughness would make him less swingy in limited.

Would you use YOUR fist to break open some shackles? Big, heavy, metal shackles?

Exactly. "Hand" is more easily metaphor-ed (I don't know the exact name for this literary device - metony or something?) than fist because it's less specific.

I'm not really sure how realistic we try to get here, but the hand/fist argument may be a moot point, because this card's rules text is probably too large to permit flavor text that long. I imagine this card would be formatted to be about five lines long (one for pro creatures, space, three  at least for combat ability), which would leave room for a one-liner at max.

It's not a big deal, and I don't know what our "policy" is on stuff like that, but I figured I might as well point that out. For the record, my vote would be for hand as well.

I just checked it out with a MTG card formatter thingy I use, it would fit if you just separate each of the phrases with semicolons, but just barely.  If they can fit flip cards onto 1 card, they could fit this no problem.  Look at Time Stop for gods sakes, that thing has 7 lines of rules text.

Anyways, does anyone have any final points to make or is this good?  Unless someone presents a very good arguement I dont see any real changes that need to be made.

I don't like calling ti a Guildmage, since it has nothing to do with the existing guildmagi story-wise and doesn't have the "friendly colors" abilities that characterize them.

It isn't part of the odyssey X-mage cycle.  I am not really sure of any "guildmage" cycle.  Could you say a bit more about what you think?

I don't even know what the odyssey guys are, but I was thinking of the Mirage guys like Shadow Guildmage.
