For the punk CD you should check out Thursday.  Their album "Full Collapse" is really good.  The album is named for when at a show the lead singer was rocking out so hard that his lung collapsed  Their live stuff is also like 80x better imo than their album stuff.

Great call Carl. I already have all these songs, but they are amongst my favourites. I thought Deja Entendu was a great album in general. I'll definitely be checking out your other recommendations, of which I haven't heard, save for NIN (which everyone and their mother has probably heard).

As for Cake: Try Dime or Italian Leather Sofa... if you don't like those, you should probably stick to the radio releases - The Distance (which always makes me rock out), Sheep Go To Heaven, and Never There.

Also Rich, I had a feeling you had already crammed a bunch of Disturbed on these CDs, so I didn't mention those gems.]

Yeah I think I've explored enough of Disturbed already. I'm in the process of d/ling those Cake albums now, I'll get back to you about those. Oh, and Lil Jon was absolutely awful, awful music. I have to admit, the beats were strong and aggressive, but there's only so many expletives you can string together in one verse before the entire song just goes to hell. I've heard aggressive hip-hop that is far better (eg. Gang Starr, Ice Cube).

Of course Lil' Jon is awful! That's the fun of listening to it! If you can, see the series of sketches that Dave Chappelle did about him-- they'll open your mind to a krunktastic universe of screaming limited phrases. Dave practically built LJ's career anyway with the series.

I love everything that Cake has made. My favorite songs of theirs are Jolene, Shadow Stabbing and I Bombed Korea if I had to pick 3. You'll never be able to pidgeonhole them into a genre, the closest I ever got was alt-country.

The Documentary was crap. It had some decent beats, but he can't rap for shit. just my 2 cents.

As far as Rock goes, here's what I recommend:

Straylight Run - Their entire CD was really relaxing and surprisingly good.
Rehab - Southern Discomfort
ANY Linkin park song - I know, I know, I feel dirty about it too, but I really like their work.
Green Day - American Idiot - I know it's probably hella mainstream, but it's still pretty good.

Well, that's it. I don't listen to punk/metal mainly cause it's way too violent for my taste. But there's the rock I listen to.

For your rock CD, check out Guster and Yo La Tengo. "Lost and Gone Forever" is probably Guster's best album (though I love "Parachute" and "Keep it Together" as well). If you want specific songs:

"Transatlanticism" by Death Cab for Cutie are huge guilty pleasures for me. Also The Postal Service. I can't believe that you people went through three pages without mentioning Led Zeppelin.

I love Transatlanticism, however I'm moreso attached to Forbidden Love, outside of the fact that it is a short album. I've given The Postal Service a go already, but outside of "The District Sleeps Alone Tonight", I haven't found a song I can really get into. Perhaps I need to give it another listen. Oh, and I'm sure most people on here already have the Led Zeppelin discography. For those who don't, I definitely recommend it.

BTW, for those Skinny Puppy fans: I just starting listening to some of their stuff. The track that really has my attention right now is "Addiction". This is what good industrial music sounds like, in my opinion. Can anyone recommend other songs of a likewise flavour?

I've been super into The Thermals alblum More Parts Per Million as of late.  I'd put them somewhere in between punk and post-punk.  The Clash is probably a given.  And if you don't listen to the Smiths you should, I guess they could fit on the punk CD since your definitition of punk is really loose, to say the least...

as disturbingly mainstream as Metallica got, a lot of what I liked off "Load" and "Reload" were some of the b-side tracks that never ended up as radio singles.  Try "Ronnie", "Fixxer", and "Outlaw Torn"...
