If a Chalice is play, with say 29 counters (ie, irrelevent), and someone plays Sculpting Steel, copying it, is it possible to have the Sculpting Steel come into play with any charge counters on it?

We locals decided that the Sculpting Steel would only ever have 0 counters on it, because the "X" in Chalice of the Void is set when playing the Chalice.  Playing Sculpting Steel wouldn't give us a chance to set X to say, 1. Right?

Thanks in advance...

I'd say it isn't possible, for the reason you mentioned. However, I will need to do some digging before I know for sure, so I'll just leave it up to Jebus (or Toad when he arrives at my place :p).

The main reason is that as sculpting steel comes into play, you copy an artifact in play; If you choose chalice, it has the same abilities, so it comes into play with X counters. Which X? dunno, it's 0 for sure, because it's undefined Smile

And it does not copy the counters on the chalice because you only copy the card, not what affects it.

You were completly right Smile

To confirm, it doesn't get counters.

X will be undefined, so it defaults to zero.  You get zero counters.
