The coverage for Syracuse is here:
http://www.starcitygames.com/coverage.php?Event=SCGPP92005-05

I'm looking for constructive feedback from those of you who are able to read it - what did you like, what did you not like, what do you want more of, etc?  This is your coverage and we tend to be pretty receptive to feedback, even if you don't see us publicly acknowledging it, so useful feedback could possibly change what we focus on for future events.

A few notes though:
1) No, we're not adding Video coverage.
2) Yes, we're still keeping coverage premium.  There's a LOT of good material in this weekend's coverage including deck tech from JP on two hot new decks, a complete metagame breakdown, and the hot hotness of the two-headed Finals.  If you don't believe _me_ though, ask around and see what the Premium members who do not write for our site think.

For those of you who don't have premium and choose not to buy, all this will still be free three months from now.

Thanks,
Ted Knutson
Managing Editor, StarCityGames.com

P.S. Kudos to everyone new I met this weekend.  Cuse had a lot of swell new people who introduced themselves and I was very happy to make their acquaintances.

I would really like to see pairings and standings as they happen.  I felt really in the dark about how the tournament was going.

I also know this may be difficult to do, but if you could get coverage up a little bit  quicker that would be awesome.  I remember it was something like 3PM before anything went up, and it would be nice to have something before then, if it's only a few quips about how the day is going and anything awesome that has happened.  Maybe a sort of bloggish dealy you could use if you have a couple minutes and want to share something.  Basically anything that could make the people watching from home feel as if they have a handle on what's happening.

Klep: We go as fast as we can in getting stuff up.  Round 1 finished around 12:15 and we have to work from there, tracking down interesting stories, etc.   It takes time to get the lay of the land and since the coverage staff will be absolutely slammed after round 3-4 until the tournament is done, it makes more sense to pursue and research a series of stories early, hence delaying the coverage post timing by a bit.  Hopefully having Pairings and Standings will help you feel more "there".

As for Pairings and Standings, we know that we are lacking them and should have that corrected for Chicago.  The whole staff is aware of the hole in the coverage that is created by that issue and has been for some time.

Also, while I am more interested in including Feature Match coverage for SCG events than Wizards is, we will still only tend to feature cool decks or great  player matchups in the future because most people would actually rather read other types of articles, and even if they SAY that's not true, they prove otherwise with their hits Smile

While actually being at the tournament prevented me from seeing the results and whatnot go up, looking back now at the amount of coverage there was, I'd have to say I was pretty impressed.  This was much, much more extensive then any of your prior coverages, and I believe it is much appreciated by the community.

To those of you who may complain about how soon this stuff was posted, these guys were working pretty much non-stop throughout the day.  I strongly believe they did all they could to get this to you guys as quickly as possible, and in my oppinion, went above and beyond the call in their coverage.

The coverage was amazing.

I especially liked the Two Headed Coverage at the end.  It gives Bob a total moral victory that you couldn't pick up from the usual schtick.

I was very impressed w/ the level of the coverage and really digging into the new decks that debuted at the events.  I would have like to have seen more on the interview side of things, perhaps addressing what seemed to be an issue w/ the venue's lack of an adequate PA system, or how the metagame turned out to be different than what the players expected.  Carl and JP did an outstanding job (you did good also, but I'm not going to kiss ass).

I was impressed with the coverage. It contained a lot more articles than previous tournaments, for one. It would have been nice to see a few more "deck tech" articles, like, for instance, the bird shit deck and the Meddling Mage control deck. It was also nice to see feature matches on the few attending "pros" as opposed to just coverage of the usual Vintage celebrities. I think that might even give a boost to the attendance of PT players out there who dabble in Type 1, especially since they seemed to be doing quite well. If the coverage of these events keeps to this high quality level or gets even better, I feel the Premium membership was money well spent.

The coverage was stellar this time around! This certainly justified SCG Premium for me (as if the great Vintage articles weren't already enough).

The Deck Tech articles were especially fun. It is very helpful to read about new decks when you hear about them, not 24-48 hours later through the various reliable/unreliable rumor mills.

Thanks again,

Let me just put it this way... wanting to see the coverage will make me get a premium account, at least for a month... the ammount you, JP and CrazyCarl milled around with laptops was just crazy.

Fantastic job.  The coverage was good enough that I read all of it, despite having actually been there. Smile  The pairings/standings thing has already been addressed, and that was my only suggestion.

Do the Top 8 Decklists get released, or are they going to be part of the Premium coverage only? And, in general, how much are people allowed to put on here without betraying the SCG premium content?

They're already posted as free content on SCG.

I can honestly say that I now feel at peace with having purchased a SCG premium account.  The coverage was excellent.  I will reiterate that standings and pairings would have nice.  The deck tech articles were my favorite part of the coverage, as seeing new decks that are doing well is always good.  All in all, great job.

This has been remedied. The extra card was the 3rd Crucible. Jeff's 'board has also been put up.

There was a coverage-related event thaty really disturbed me during the tournament.
Grand Inquisitor was playing against a Canadian who spoke very little English,
and JP and Knut wanted coverage pictures of the Top deck.
They totally interrupted the match, moving cards around, disrupting the play.
The Canadian was having a hard enough time with the language issues,
and this was way over the top.
Shortly after, GI cast Timetwister,
and the thoroughly rattled Canadian shuffled in his permanents as well.
We caught it on the spot, and we were able to restore the game state
to everyone's satisfaction, but the interference was inexcusable.

The coverage is not more important than the game.

This particular incident  was very frustrating for me as well.  For starters I had no idea that the guy didn't speak English, and it was clear that he didn't understand we were doing coverage, and he was more than a little snippy about our requests over the course of the day, including when we simply wanted him to report the the Feature Match area.

All we wanted at the time mentioned was to take a picture of the Helm of Awakening deck with a board full of permanents and simply moved a Future Sight to get a better picture - the problems listed were caused by the language issues and nothing more.

This is also the type of thing that NEVER happens at a GP or PT because people are used to being covered - I suspect as time goes on it will stop happening at Power 9's as well.

How much is the premium?

As for the results of the tournament, interesting T8.

I'm glad I got premium. The coverage of Syracuse was superb.
Seeing the meta-game breakdown was absolutely awesome, and the Match reports were great too.
I have no complaints about the coverage, except maybe the time it took to get something up, but that has already been adressed, and I understand it takes time to do this stuff, so I won't complain.

Thanks for the great coverage, and lets hope I can find a ride from Canada so I can meet all you people at the next Syracuse  Very Happy.
