I don't play other formats very frequently so I am bias towards Vintage, but I was suprised that Smokestack didn't make the article at ALL, not even a mention. It was the second non-mox artifact I thought of, with the first being Null Rod. I felt like I steped into Bizzaro World when I read this thread and no one mentioned it either, I found that far more shocking than not seeing it in Zvi's list.

Steel Golem actually mattered, though, because it was in Necro decks after Ice Age left Type Two. PWB never did much of anything as far as I know.

Steel Golem was also in extended Pox lists, or at least in the ones Wakefield played against.

I think it might be more of a recency bias, as i dont remember smokestack even being playable until two years ago (well after Urza's Saga release date: Oct '98).

I think most of Zvi's cards had a long term presence and were mostly immediately powerful.  Even Lion's Eye Diamond didn't take that long to catch on.

The reason the SoLoCryptMoxen haven't had an effect on non-Vintage formats is because they've never been legal in them. Trinisphere, however, has had little to no impact outside Vintage, and it is legal in other formats.

Well, Time Vault has never been legal in anything other than Vintage and it has never had even remotely as serious an implication on the format as cards such as Null Rod or Trinisphere.

It was in the ones I played against, and with too (unless they were the animate/triskillion version). Steel Golem was a finisher of choice in European Draw Go too, tempest/mirage age T2. Smile

Time Vault was banned because of its power level, as printed. The Oracle re-wording with the Time counters fixed it, but until then, it was absolutely broken. Any untap effect gave you an extra turn – Mindslaver has nothing on the original Time Vault.
