How typical. No one can write my name correctly  Sad . Anyway, great tournament, it was a blast. Too bad it was at the same time as Leiden, but 46 people isn't that bad. Next time, we should force those T2 players to join us so we get over 50.

I'm sure it isn't  Wink . It should be "Dhondt" not D'hondt . I won't go into any detail, but the difference is I'd be living in a different part of Belgium if it was the latter. My name is constantly written the wrong way (how hard can it be, it only has one vowel). Actually, I don't really care, but I just nag about it  Wink .

1 Counterspell

the deck has really been built around Gifts

(BTW 3 Polluted and 3 Flooded would have been better)

The real question ofcourse is, is it just a random fluke? Or is he on to something?

Mana Duane wrote me the following about the Gifted Slaver list:

Quote
I thought I would give my input to our decklist. I’m not allowed to post on the tournament forum so I figured I’d mail you then if any of it is worth posting, could you post it for me please?

First to answer peoples comments: We knew 3 flooded and 3 Polluted would have been better, but we only own 2 foil flooded and Dave figured bling was more important than this minor change (I actually ran 3 and 3). To be honest it doesn’t make any real difference: if you’ve casting gifts, mana obviously isn’t a big issue. Also wasting a gifts on picking up land is never going to happen. There are much better things you can do with the card!

On Boseiju, we figured there would be a lot on control around (and we were right, all the decks in the top 4 were running Drain). The idea behind Boseiju was that it could win the control match when I am already ahead, and that it could actually turn the control match around when I am behind. ie if the opponent out draws you early in a control mirror you expect to lose, however with Boseiju can you force through some key spells and pull the game back. You actually have 5 very broken spells it can be used with: Will, Tinker and 3 gifts. To a lesser extend DT, Time Walk and Thirst are probably worth forcing through, especially if you’re getting outdrawn. Did it work? The only time it did something was when Tim tried to force an uncounterable gifts in the quarter final, which pretty much sealed his fate. Maybe Library would be a better anti-control land (we were debating between Library and Boseiju when we were building the deck)

On to gifts. Obviously we think it pretty broken, that’s why we build a deck around it! It seams to compare favorably to Fact or Fiction since you’re picking the cards, so in effect you control which cards you are given. Also since it is 4 cards of your choice, not 5 cards from the top of your library it is always relevant to your hand and board position, and it is always powerful. FoF is more random. Compared to intuition is also seams to be very strong. You’re paying 1 mana to tutor for an extra card and Gifts is better at putting cards in your graveyard – With gifts you only need 1 Slaver in the deck in order to “entomb” it, with intuition you need 2 slavers in the deck to do this, or you just get the slaver in your hand.

We had 5 basic gifts in mind for the deck:

1. The broken gifts. You take 4 out of: DT, Lotus, Time Walk, Ancestral, Tinker, Welder. If you do this like 2nd or 3rd turn the opponent is normally in trouble. It allows you to tutor for 2 very broken cards and also loads your graveyard so when you find the will it is totally insane.

2. “Give me Will”. You take DT, VT, MT and something else to make your Will better. Normally Lotus or Time Walk or a Force to help it resolve. We prefer this to running Recoup since a 7 mana Will doesn’t seam that good. Tutoring seams better since you can spread the cost over several turns and its always going to be less than 7 anyway! Also if I happen to draw VT during the game, its still a useful card. I’m not sure I can say the same for drawing Recoup.

3. Counter Spells: Take Duress, Mana Drain Counterspell and FoW. This may appear a bit defensive but really don’t underestimate the power of instant speed tutoring for 2 counters, especially against combo decks.

4. “Double Entomb”. If you have an active welder then you should consider using the gifts to entomb your Slaver and Pentavus. We all know that a single slave can win games so this is a strong tactic. This is also a reason why the deck runs Pentavus over the CoW kill – The Pentavus kill only requires 2 cards, so you can gifts for it. COW requires 3 cards, so the slaver will always end up in your hand.

5. The 4 moxen approach. Sometimes you have a slave lock or just an active welder but not enough artifacts/mana, and taking 4 moxen can sometimes lead to an opponent’s scoop step.

A couple of other notes about card choices in the SB. Bounce is the most universal way of getting rid of problem cards and hate, and we decided to have enough to get at least one with gifts. For aggro the neat little trick would be gifts for fire, ice, lava dart and engineered explosives, or just some bounce for larger threats, and combo would be getting FoW, arcane laboratory, trinisphere and SoR or just the 4 counter gifts.
Hope some of that is helpful. Thanks for organising a great tournament (even if it was proxy legal…grrrr)

I was doing the same thing in testing the day before (using a loa and Boseiju double land) and went with Library of Alexandria. One of the reasons being it can help me out when playing against other decks than control. I've won 2 games because I dropped loa in the first turn (I always lose the die roll, so I was always able to use the loa right away). That was also why I took loa over Boseiju in testing. I really hate to see the Boseiju in my starting 7. Also, it can be quite painfull if you need to use it for a regular mana now and then. It's more a mid to late game card. It might be worthwhile in a control heavy meta, but I doubt that I'd replace my loa with it. And running both just isn't an option imo...

Fire/Ice is just one card name unless it is on the stack, right? How can you gifts for it?

I'm actualy more surprised at only 3 mana drain. Gifts decks in general seem pretty mana intensive, and Drain seems like an automatic 4-of. Is there something I'm missing, or could it be that you really couldn't find anything else to cut?
