I thought this would be fun, alot of us are into music, and alot of us are into metal and rock and all that good stuff. I don't want to put Rap into any of this because I dispise it. Also; I'd rather this not turn into a horrible flame war and if it does, I ask any moderator to close it.
So, Here's some simple Categories
Best Drummer Ever Best Guitarist Ever Best Bassist Ever
Best Modern Drummer Best Modern Guitarist Best Modern Bassist
Best Songs Ever Best Modern Songs
Note; I don't want any of this to be according to sales or any of that. I want this to be personal choice due to the musician(s) ability. If there's any best of's that should be added, post them! Also, you can give a song that displays that musician's ability the best. Now, my choices
Best Drummer Ever; Neil Peart Personally, Although Bonham is right up there. Best Guitarist; I'm going to say Van Halen, I like Page and Floyd alot. Hendrix, not so much Best Bassist; No Idea
Best Modern Drummer; Danny Carey, There's alot of other drummers that are high up there nowadays. Best Modern Guitarist; I'm not entirely sure on this. Zakk Wylde is insane though, so is Maiden's lead guitarist Best bassist; Again, no idea.
Best Song Ever; I don't really know and this is probably the largest category. Stairway to Heaven I guess. Best Modern Song; I'm not even sure if this should be a category or not so I'm not deciding on this one.

If we are talking about general rock talent, Carter Beauford and Danny Carey are candidates for the best drummer position.

As for Best Guitarist, surely Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) should be at least mentioned?

Best Drummer Ever: Phil Selway. Best Guitarist Ever: Jimi Hendrix and Michael Hedges. (1st place tie) Best Bassist Ever: Michael Manring. But I'll give a shout out to Geddy Lee here. Les Claypool and Vic Wooten, as well. Might as well mention John Entwhistle and Jaco while I'm at it to. (write-in) best saxophonist: John Coltrane. Maybe Eric Dolphy. Best Modern Drummer: I really like that guy from Interpol. He's amazing. That guy from Primus too. Best Modern Guitarist: no opinon. Best Modern Bassist: no opinion. (write in) Best Modern Composer: Steve Reich. Best Songs Ever: Shit, I have no idea. "Across the Universe" (The Beatles) maybe. "Woodstock" (Joni Mitchell). Best Modern Songs: "Kid A" or "Talk Show Host" (Radiohead) (write in) Best Modern Band: Radiohead. Neil Peart blows guys. I say this as a reformed Rush fan. I was listening to Power Windows the other day, for old time's sake, and he just isn't nearly as good as I remember from high school. The same can be said for Alex Lifeson. Now, sure, Power Windows is a pretty so-so album, but I've had the same exp for every other Rush album I've given a relistening in the past couple of years. Geddy Lee, however, is a different story. His bass lines (not vocal) are still really infectious and completely ass-kicking. He withstands the test of time, unlike his bandmates. Getting back to Peart, someone like Bill Bruford or (Coltrane's drummer) Elvin Jones are light years ahead. I say: move along. Move along.

The best song ever is Boys Don't Cry by the Cure.
For best modern song, I've been listening to Holland 1945 by Neutral Milk Hotel frequently lately.

Best Song Ever: Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton.
New category (?) Best Composer: Howard Shore. (he made most of the LotR songs and Star Wars too I think)

OMG Kas you philistine. Star Wars was obviously John Williams. As for the options:
Best Drummer Ever - Gene Krupa Best Guitarist Ever - Jimi Hendrix Best Bassist Ever - Geezer Butler
Best Modern Drummer - Danny Carey (Tool) Best Modern Guitarist - Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins) Best Modern Bassist - Les Claypool (Primus)
Best Song Ever - She's Not There (Santana) Best Modern Song - Pushit (Tool)
DISCLAIMER: I just like to say that while my heart goes out to hardcore and to a lesser degree industrial, I'm realistic enough not to name Slapshot's Mark McKay as the best drummer ever or Ministry's Mike Scaccia as the best guitarist. While both bands kick the ass of everyone on the above list as far as my personal tastes are concerned, they're simply not the best on a techical level.

New category (?) Best Composer: Howard Shore. (he made most of the LotR songs and Star Wars too I think) Incorrect. Shore did indeed do LotR, but all 6 Star Wars movies were done by John Williams, who gets my vote by far (disregarding Beethoven, Bach, etc.). Amongst others, he has done Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Jaws, Harry Potter (not the second one, they just got some guy to remix his stuff from the first one, realized their mistake, and rehired him for the third), Home Alone, Schindler's List, E.T., and just about every other Spielberg movie, plus a bunch more. He's also been nominated for over 40 Oscars, and usually conducts the orchestra on that night. Finally, he has written of themes for the Olympics (1996 and 2000, IIRC), and conducted the Boston Pops for years. If there is a memorable film score from the last thirty years, chances are pretty good that John Williams composed it.

Best all-round musicians: Paul McCartney, Queen (all four of them were amazing musicians, capable of playing several instruments, writing and singing). In terms of sheer musical talent, it's pretty hard to go past Mozart, though.

Best guitarist (all categories): Stevie Ray Vaughn, Yngwie Malmsteen, Michael Romeo (Symphony X), Pat the White Best drummer: Many many choices here... Martin Lopez (Opeth), Gene Hoglan (Death, SYL), Sean Reinert (Death, Cynic) Best bassist: Steve Harris (Iron Maiden), Steve Digiorgio (Death, Sadus, Testament) Best singer: Hansi Kursch (Blind Guardian), Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden)
I don't like old school music (Zappa, Led Zeppelin Jimi Hendrix) so I can't judge. Mostly into metal, but my choices depend mostly on the groove or sheer technicality. Lopez from Opeth may not play the most intricate stuff but he sure has the groove and this is REALLY important to me.

Matt, Stop editing the posts! Well the first one, he just had the wrong song title. It was obvious what song he meant. The second one I assumed was also a mistake, since Mason didn't so shit and Waters was like 65-75% of the band's creativity. I wasn't trying to impose my opinion, just correct some factual errors.
