Well, with Jamie Wakefield coming back to StarCityGames, i have to admit i considered the premium membership for the first time.  Granted, i do miss match coverage, Tim Aten's sardonic style (even though i've never drafted or played T2), and even the occasional Smemmen article.  Am i missing out or is it only ho-hum?  I would ask only the average users to use this poll, not premium writers, Starcity shills, or people will never buy the service.  Thanks!

As of now (due to Financial Issues) I do not have a SSG premium Account, and I regret it almost every day. It really seems that the Premium Stuff is Top Notch and Especialy b/c I like to play Limited/T2. And from almost everyone ive heard they deffinatly enjoy it.

I have a SCG premium membership and I would say it is worth about what they are charging.  ($30 a year)  Any less, and I think it is a great deal, any more, and I might reconsider...

I am a vintage only player, so I don't really read many of the T2/Limited/Extended/etc articles, but I do enjoy Mike Flores.  The site does have at least 1-2 vintage articles per week, which is solid.  Sometimes I don't think they should be premium, but since that takes a lot of time to put togther, I can be sympathetic to the writer.  In phil's metagame analysis articles, I often find them as a barometer for using certain cards (disrupting shoals / engineered explosives / which SB hate to expect / etc).  It is much more concrete than just preparing a SB with 2-3 other people saying, hrm, what do I need?

I would recommend trying it either for a month, or splitting the yearly fee with a friend (not sure if SCG endorses this) to ease the pain.  I figure if my deck costs ~$4k, I can shell out $30 a year to make sure nobody has more 'public' information than me going into a tournament.

I really enjoy it.
It's something very useful to those who play various formats.
I generally only play T1, so I don't find there is enough T1 articles (but how many T1 articles can you write in a month that people will continue to find interesting).

I am glad that you put public in quotes. Saying that Starcity Premium is public information is like saying that a online magazine subscribtion is public information. It's is available for a price to anyone, while it is not freely accessible.

Info on TMD is freely accessible to all that are not blocked by site admins, which would have a lot more to do with attacking the site (i.e. DOS, or breaking in an screwing with stuff) than to stop the free dissemination of information.

Are the jamie Wakefield articles good?  I read his first one (that was free) and wasn't overly impressed, but i assume his two most recent ones are good.  Any opinions?

I wouldn't say Jamie Wakefield is someone you read for tech or to learn to play the game better.  He's admittedly quite rusty.  You read Jamie Wakefield because he's a damn fine writer and knows how to tell a story.  I'm very glad I'm able to read him.

Smmenen's articles, Stanton's statistics, and P9 coverage makes it worth it.  Everything else good (which is few, but there are a few nice extra things) are just bonus.  If i played other formats it would be well worth it.

Thats what i am referring to...Though i'm sure the T1 tech is nice, the Wakefield stories would be gravy.....

question, I dont have premium so I would not know this but does star city protect their articles? Seems like someone could just copy and paste then let the information spread like wildfire across the internet. (Yes some people are that sadistic)

Do they at least have that program that blocks right clicks on the premium article webpage?

The only articles I've found to be truly worth it are Zvi's.

There are ways around those programs and javascripts, so that wouldn't help stop someone who really wanted to be annoying. I'd imagine they do have some sort of protection scheme, even it's just Premium writers keeping an eye out for them, since it's in those writers' best interests to help out.

Additionally, while it wouldn't help with private, unlinked webpages, Google searches for specific blocks of text would find stuff reasonably quickly, too. Stopping team members sharing tech by email, private page, or just sharing passwords is basically impossible, however, except by making it cheap enough that people will easily be able to afford it (which, realistically, it is, for tournament players at least).

Sharing username/password info. is probably forbidden by the terms and conditions of Premium, but it's not considered copyright breach or anything like that (A U.S. Supreme Court decision considered online subscriptions as being equivalent to magazine subscriptions, thus allowing people to share/sell/lend the 'magazine' as they would a paper copy).

Shared accounts = deleted accounts.

And yes, SCG premium is really worth it.

At the bottom of every page on SCG it says "All content on this page (c) 2004 StarCityGames and may not be reproduced whole without consent."

Well they've finally convinced me to try premium- simply for the pleasure of reading how the pros will do at SSG Rochester...I hate to say it, but i think the pros are definitely going to play control.  They will have no problems getting the cards they want (i'm sure part of their contract to attend was access to cards), not to mention they will be able to outplay almost every one of there opponents.  Sure T1 has gotten more competitive, but i doubt anywhere close to as competitive as Worlds, PT's or even the top table of a GP.  It won't take them that long to adapt to the environment.

"... i'm sure part of their contract to attend was access to cards"

They have no "contract to attend" nor do they have any special "access" to any of our cards.

We invited them to come. They said yes. The end.  Very Happy
