In a Salvagers Combo deck (Auriok Salvagers + Black Lotus = Infinate Mana), Phyrexian Furnace is used a "win" condition in order to draw out your deck and find the WINNER. It also doubles as 'yard hate for your opponant.

The question is this:

If you get an early Furnace out, should you eat a card a turn to keep their graveyard in check or should you leave the yard so when you go off, you can draw out your deck?

Thanks...

If you have an early Furnace out, go for it!

I would probably eat the opponent's graveyard if you think it's a good idea (like say, if there is a Strip Mine or MindSlaver there...) and I would probably not worry about their graveyard if it's irrelevant (say, against burn or White Weenie).

The idea is, when you are trying to go off, you will probably play some spells (Brainstorm/fetches/Forces), which will get you food for the Furnace, and you might draw into further spells for more food. Eating your own graveyard is acceptable.

If you have a Salvager and a Furnace, but no Lotus, then you have a really crappy draw engine (4 mana for 1 card! wheee!), but it still draws cards...

I would also eat the graveyard myself, if it was any relevent. What's the point in actually playing the card, if you're not going to use it! My metagame is full of Salvagers.deck, and they're all using Phyrexian Furnace, because it's certainly a house against a lot of decks.

You just shouldn't have any problems to combo out if you only have your graveyard to eat. With Salvager and Lotus, you've got infinite mana, so depending on your build, you should stumble on something relevent quite quick (Intuition, TfK, Trinket Mage, etc...), and in the case where you've got Salvager and Lion's Eye Diamond, then you have no problem because Lion's Eye just dumps your hand if need be!

When I play an early Furnace, I eat a card per turn.
This action can make you win the game against decks like Slaver, Dragon (by eating Squee and Dragon), ...

When you go off, you eating your graveyard to draw.
