If this looks vaguely familiar to you, it should: Royal Assassin

Orcish Engineer
1RR
Creature – Orc Artificer
1/1
Tap: Destroy target tapped artifact.

Do you think the casting cost is right? How about the power/toughness? Does this have to be a rare like Royal Assassin?

Current Wording:

Orcish Engineer
1RR
Creature – Orc Artificer
1/1
Tap: Destroy target tapped artifact.
It was broken anyway.

Isn't that very strong? And also, this seems much more like a white card.

I don't know, is it? Maybe with Relic Barrier. I'm sure there are a lot of artifacts that you'd want to destroy that don't tap. Plus, this doesn't prevent regeneration and can't destroy indestructible artifacts.

I don't see this as a white card. I see it as another red card in a long line of bad creature artifact destroyers... Goblin Tinkerer, Krark-Clan Engineers, etc.

You've made two analogies in this thread, Marco, and I don't think the two are consistent at all. On one hand, you've suggested that this is like a Royal Assassin for artifacts. To me, that sounds like a good card. Unlike J||<3, I don't think this is overpowered or in the wrong colour. Straight up artifact destruction is red's game. On the other hand, you've called this a bad artifact destroyer, which I just don't think is so. Sure, there are plenty of artifacts that don't naturally tap, which makes this intrinsically a little bit weaker than Royal Assassin, but there's a huge selection of artifacts that do naturally tap where this would be a very strong play. You also mentioned Relic Barrier with this – recall that Icy Manipulator + Royal Assassin used to be a powerhouse combo. It isn't the be-all and end-all of pairings anymore, but I still think that this is a very respectably powerful card.

This looks absolutely fine as-is. I'd like some flavor text though, there's tons of room.

Shouldn't this be a Dwarf, rather than a now-defunct creature type?

Hear, hear! The world needs more dwarves.

A dwarven engineer wouldn't break stuff--it could be a goblin or an orc.

It doesn't necessarily have to be an engineer or an artificer, though. Dwarven Demolition Team, for example, destroys stuff. (And technically, demolition is actually an engineering field.)

Engineers break stuff pretty well. We can then try to put them together again. We call this development. And remember that the Dwarves' favourite tool is the hammer. Nuff said.

Orcs may well be capable of breaking things but only a Dwarf can 'develop' them. {Goblin Welder is excluded from this discussion of flavour because of obvious power-level and flavour concerns}

It was broken anyway

From Ask Wizards - November 3, 2004:

Q: "Are Orcs being phased out in favor of Goblins?"
A: From Brady Dommermuth, Magic Creative Director:

"I'm not sure how to answer your question, Matt, because the last new Orc we printed was Orcish Settlers, from the Weatherlight set. That was more than seven years ago. All the Orcs since then have been reprints in core sets (such as Eighth Edition's Orcish Spy and Orcish Artillery). So I think the phasing out of Orcs was done long ago, back when I was a lowly editor. But they'll continue to appear as core sets, and I'm sure they'll make a comeback in an expert-level expansion someday. Frankly, I'm in no hurry to bring them back. I think they're boring. Although Magic and the entire fantasy genre owe an awful lot to Tolkien, I don't think it's good or interesting if Magic features every single kind of creature that appears in The Lord of the Rings."

I happen to like Orcs in Magic, and the above can be true of Elves, Dragons, Dwarves, and Goblins. Also, myself and others are still creating Merfolk eventhough WotC has abandoned them. That said, this doesn't have to be an Orc, although I did have Orcish Mechanics in mind when I named this. I am also interested in creating Dwarves and I have already created three that have been added to the Master List.

So, what is the consensus?

I really like that flavor text, dandan!

I vote for orc in the hopes that they will start putting more orcs and dwarfs into magic and not make EVERY small red creature a goblin.  It's gotten to the point where we have to consider the creature type goblin as an ability :/

Dwarf or Orc? I would like to keep this an Orc, but I'm not against other creature types (Dwarf probably being the best).

ORC!!

Seriously, this should be an orc or a goblin, and I think goblins are used too much. Keep it as an orc.
