Foil Cards

Does anyone know the printing technique used to make foil cards?  Is it some sort of UV ink placed on top of a regular card?  At first I thought it was just put over the white to cause the cool shine effect, but then I noticed that the black on the borders is slightly darker too.  Is it just the way this coating reacts with the colors underneath?

The reasoning is this.  I have some art prints done in photoshop that I would like to get printed, and if I could get em foiled that would be cool.  I tried doing a search for foil printing online, but they all refer to gold foil printing. I saw something online called uv ink printing, but I don't know if thats it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

They have a special layer that goes on top of a regular card back. Try peeling the face off a foil common to see for yourself.

Ok, but is it like a piece of celephane stuck on, or is it an ink that dries into a film?

It's definitely some material below the ink, because you can take off ink while leaving the foil layer below it.

If you want to do some fun experiments try tossing a foil card in the microwave or try the bend test.
