I think I did a poll like this on the old old forums(Man is TMD is old.), but it was about Villains or something. Due to Bryce and Solaran being A-Wall. I'm going to leave this open to anything and everything. I'd like everyone who posts to speak their minds on their favorite Character. Why they like them so much, what makes them so much better then the others. Also, if people can relate to any of the characters, speak them. And, if people have anything that relates to character that they have around the house or in their lives, that'd be great. One of my mom's friends has a superman tattoo, and I know lots of other people do too. Suggested Reading would be great too.
My Favorite Character is... Spawn! As most of you may know, Spawn is a former government agent who was betrayed by his own agents. He unknowingly traded his soul to the ruler of Hell so he could live amongst the living and keep his wife. 5 years after his death, he returned to find his wife married to his best friend. Now, as a homeless crusader Spawn lives with beggards in the alleys of NY and fights off anything that will harm humanity, all while trying to save himself from turning into the super soldier of hell that he's supposed to be. There's lots of comics on this character and eventually I'd like to get every single one. Some are bland as other characters while others are amazing. Todd McFarlane, former artist of Marvel created Spawn in the early '90s and since then Spawn has been one of the most dominant stand-alone comic. I don't have anything of spawn at home other then some comics. I still love the character though(points to Avatar) and hope Todd keeps going with him.

I saw the subject line of the post and came to the thread to post my love for Spawn as well. I don't really follow any comic book stuff anymore, but I still own Spawn #1-25. (my only comics) I used to really like Image and Variant (old comic book makers at the top of the heap back in the day). I have no idea what Spawn (or image and variant) are up to now-a-days.
I have re-read the story line 2-3 times since I was young, and I still feel it is cool. One thing JuJu didn't mention is that Spawn has a life/energy meter that runs throughout the comics. When he does something spectacular (uses magic power, heals, etc) this power bar goes down. (started at 9:9:9:9) I have always wondered what will happen when this gets to the end. Is it close now? Has he found a way to re-up it?
Anyway, great thread.

When it runs out, apparently he becomes that servant of hell that he was proposed to be and hell will roam earth under his control or something. No idea what has happened to it lately as comic books here are scarce and I hate ordering through the net.

I am a total Johnny the Homicidal Maniac fan. Vasquez creates a strangely psychotic world not unlike the warped reality I live in, except that its in black and white. This dark, melodramatic yet subtly humorous character is easy for me to relate to.
Besides, his name is JOHNNY THE HOMICIDAL MANIAC. And thats just good old fashioned values.

Squee comics had more of an appeal to me. Took the innocence of youth and turned it into "no one is safe, ever, and even your teddy bear wants to torment your soul." Spiderman is my ultimate favorite - but not the conventionals. The Twisted Toyfare Theatre series.

I'm a big fan of most of the star wars comics by Dark Horse (Tales of the Jedi and Dark Empire specifically), but they don't really have epic storylines or a plethora of memorable characters. After those however, I really like pretty much everything done by Marvel. Age of Apocalypse and the Onslaught series were ridiculously awesome, and the continued longevity of the entire company just makes me happy.
Well I guess I need to answer the topic at hand... My favorite characters are Apocalypse from the marvel brand, and Exar Kun from the Star Wars Dark Horse comics.

Incredibly, noone has said Batman yet. I sure hope your mental image of the great Bruce Wayne hasn't been spoiled by his gay Superdickery antics, because he is by far the coolest comic book character ever. Suffice to say, Bruce Wayne is a multiple billionaire who's completely fucked up in the head because his parents were shot before his eyes when he was eight. I have no love for the Batman of the TV series or the old comics. I don't like it when he's up against supervillains. I want Batman to be like he is in my all-time favorite comic books (incidentally both by Sin City's Frank Miller) Year One and The Dark Knight Returns: dark, gritty, depressing. In both, Batman's story runs parallel to that of Jim Gordon. In Year One, Gordon has not yet become the police commissioner, and is instead a middle-aged cop with a shady past working to redeem himself amidst Gotham's corrupt police force, while Bruce Wayne learns the ropes as a costumed avenger. In The Dark Knight Returns, Gordon is seventy, and is forced into mandatory retirement from his post as police commissioner while Wayne returns from retirement as Batman. These stories gave Gordon's character a depth he had seldom achieved before. The Dark Knight Returns served to boost sales and interest for mainstream comic books, particularly superhero comics, as its popularity was nothing short of phenomenal. It allowed Batman to finally shed the image of a campy, clownish character for which he was still known; and it also helped to raise the image of comic books so that they were no longer known solely as a form of children's entertainment. The Dark Knight Returns also forever severed the friendly relationship of Batman and Superman, replacing it with a more antagonistic one.

Sandman -DC Comics. No character has more depth. You can literally watch him change, throughout the 100 issue serious.
As far as mainstream stuff goes, i always seemed to like Deathstroke, though i have no idea why.
Batman is probably the most consistently cool character ever.

Sandman is pretty awesome, but Spider Jerusalem (Transmetropolitan) wins out as a sweeter character.
Edit: honorable mention for V, just because.
Also, while I'm not sure whether transmet or sandman is the better comic (I'd probably lean towards sandman), I found spider to be a more engaging character. Morpheus makes a great tragic hero, but it's kind of telling that he doesn't even show up in a ton of the comics.

Interesting...I personally could never figure out the appeal of Invisibiles or Transmetroplitan...They seemed like they tried too hard to be cool (the writing was too self-aware). Maybe i didn't give them enough of a read.

I need to agree with Bram. I love the characters that don't necessarily fight against cosmic beings 24/7. I have a huge respect for the characters are just insane with hand to hand and fighting without powers. Captain America, Batman, Wolverine(though less), Deadpool. They're all pretty hot.
