Yup, that's it guys, there's a judge's promo Sol Ring on EBAY and it's already fetching going for 30$ and we're still 6 days from the end of the auction. I wonder how much it'll cost by the end...  Mr. Green

Yeah, not pimp.  Beta is infinitely better than that.

Hmm, it's not that bad looking... and it's probably going to end up worthing more than a Beta ring.

There seems to be a trend to print old cards from the eternal formats right now. With Balance being the first from the restricted list and now Sol Ring. I wonder what follows next...?

I'm also wondering if in some time... probably a couple of years, if they would dare to start to print power cards as Judge promos... but then again, perhaps not as these would fetch extremely high prices...

For artifacts, the new card face totally wrecks any shot of being pimp.  The colored cards and lands aren't nearly as bad, but I personally can't stand the new grey face of artifacts.  I know I'm not alone in this feeling.

In terms of pimpness and rarity, here's justification for the Beta ring: There are probably about the same number of these foil Rings and Beta rings.  Rares were limited to about 5000 for Alpha/Beta (that's rounding up a lot), and there's more uncommons than that.  Let's guestimate four times as many (that seems reasonable in my opinion), so 20,000.  There's probably at least that many judges, or very close to it.  I'm not 100% sure how they do the mailings, but I'm sure they'll be mailing these out to the other judges (maybe only L2 and higher, not sure how they do it).  Needless to say, it will actually be easier to find one of these than a Beta Ring.  Only someone who's into old cards or has been playing for a very long time has a Beta Ring.  You can be a judge and have started in Onslaught block, and play nothing but T2 or limited.  So, to find one of these, all you need to do is find a local judge who couldn't care less about foil cards, Vintage, or pimpness, and pick it up.  It might cost you a bit, but it's not hard to get.  Finding a Beta Ring that someone is willing to give up is infinitely more difficult than that.  Same goes for the Balance, which at least has the distinction of looking pretty cool.

Foil Ring looks awesome. I'll trade in my BB one for the Foil eventually Smile.

Now what about this rumor that Rune Horvik is spreading about judge Foil promos - we have Mana Drain, Tundra, Workshop, and Contract from Below supposedly scheduled for release down the line? That seems very unlikely but if its true, then this opens up the possibility of foil P9 down the line...exciting!!

I can't see them doing Workshop or Mana Drain.  Too powerful and expensive.  The prices on foil Shops and Drains would be pretty outrageous, and it ultimately wouldn't really help anyone to have special foil versions of hard to get cards out there, except the judges who get to sell those cards.  Now, Contract from Below I can really see.  Since it's the most powerful card in 5 color and 5-color players love pimp cards, it would make a really good choice.

I think the main point of the foil cards is to help the judges by giving them very valuable rewards, as opposed to helping T1 players pimp out their decks Smile. I shudder to think how much a foil Drain or Shop would be worth, let alone something like a foil Lotus - at least $2K for sure I think. This is about the closest thing to printing your own money.

Very true, but I think a lot of people have pointed to judge rewards cards as a way to put more copies of old expensive cards out there.  It fails miserably for that.  I'm not really sure what the true purpose of the rewards cards is.  I don't know if they really intend for them to be another way of paying judges, in a way that costs them pennies, or they just want to give them something that they can keep because its cool and valuable.  For example, I wonder if they ever consider "how much is this going to sell for?"  Personally, I think they're just looking for cards that are well known that haven't been done in foil before--making them unique (they did slip with the Negator if this is part of their thinking), which gives the judges something nice for the time they put into judging.

It's mostly the latter - it costs them very little, but a lot of good judges will be like 'HOLY SHIT, FOIL MANA DRAIN TO SELL'.  It's kinda hard to figure how much money those are going to be worth, but probably a whole lot.

Yeah, but as someone said they wont be doing such expensive cards... Look at just how much Balance and Gemstone mine fetched! And these are relatively cheap cards (Alpha and Beta Balance should be quite expensive, I dunno how much) but these cards can be acquired for relatively cheap prices for Revised Balance and Gemstone Mine is really cheap as well and they fetch hundreds!

2K is 2000, right? Isn't that the usual price of a BB Black Lotus? If they made a foil Lotus it would quite possibly go for A LOT more.

I told your Hyppie and Kird ape were in 9th.
I told you Legacy was getting REAL sponsorship.

I tell you now - Mana Drain will be foil by this time 2006.

Some people have no taste. I’d rather play with a revised Sol Ring in poor condition than with this atrocity. Hell, I’d rather play T2.

He's a dealer and you're a collector.  Can't you make the bet a little more interesting?  Like wager a jap foil brainstorm against a chinese 5th brainstorm or something.

Steve - it was just Bazaar! (and yes, I was really pissed when my sources weren't good on that.)

Mrieff - I'll take your money any day of the week. Be it ten bucks, or (a little more extreme than what kowal suggested) japanese alliances promo's - I'm in.

Hey did anyone happen to catch the seller of that (or now those) Sol Rings? (I'll give you a hint; these things look much better in person).

Betting with cards is much more difficult, as I don't know which cards i will still own next year, and which have been traded/sold away.

But 20 is fine with me as well.

So you get $20 if  Mana Drain has been printed in foil before 11 July.
I get $20 if  Mana Drain has not been printed in foil before 11 July.

bidding is up to a staggering 202,50 dollars.

I got almost 2 signed bazaars for that kind of money (cost me just a little more) and i would take those over a single sol ring any day of the week. This is just dumb for a card that will probably be worth about 40 bucks in a years time.

<bandwagon>

Eww, anything new at all is horrible! I will show my one three three seven-ness by publicly decrying what is actually a decent looking card with updated art!

</bandwagon>

I'd throw that thing in my 5-Color if I had it. Hey, it stops ante!

And stop bitching, the card looks fine. You people would bitch about the promo Gemstone Mines, but I have seen them in person, and they would kill you for your bicycle, they are that cool.

just for the record, i never said anything about how they look as i think they look fine. I just think it is an exorbitant amount of money for a card that is not even that good. I would rather get some piece of power or spend it on some legend cards i am still looking for.

My Japanese Gemstones > foil Gemstone with new card face and obnoxious DCI logo in textbox.  Razz  Also, the Gemstones are likely to become Player Rewards Cards, thus devoiding them of all pimpness (since everyone and his brother is now signed up for that, unlike back when they handed out Wastelands).  And I saw them in person, since Josh Rayden traded for one and had it placed in his badge holder for all to see at the 8 pm Saturday tournament.

In addition, I don't have a bicycle.  If I did, the Gemstone Mine could have it.  I'd get a Japanese bicycle to match my Japanese Gemstone Mine and Japanese dice.  They go well with the Japanese Sundering Titan with Hokusai on it you did for me, which might qualify as the coolest thing ever.  Razz
