[7-10] Mykeatog’s Mox – Auburn, Mass
I go 2-2-1… 31 people attended
I will never play shop aggro again and am going back to budget aggro decks.
I go pick up my buddy Pete in Windsor, and then the loooooong drive begins. I don’t know if it’s just me but everything in Mass feels so different. The highways are different, the people are different, even the trees. Pete’s building his deck, Oath Salvagers, on the way and we talk about random things and how many pithing needles will show up (none actually show up). A bunch of familiar faces show up. Pete can draw into the top 8 round 5 but he gets paired down, and with his worst match up, Stax. Disgruntled, we make our way back home. We pass the Arby’s and drive a few miles down looking for a better dining facility, eventually we turn around and see this sign advertsing Arby’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, and some other places. We follow these signs and it tells us to take a right. We take a right… and we pass by the Arby’s from earlier with no Wendy’s or BK in sight… wtf… I yell “fuk mass and get on the highway. Once we’re in Connecticut we find a McDonald’s and eat.
Oh yeah, you probably want to know my decklist and the matches I played. My deck was basically Rico’s list from SCG but with lightning greaves.
Round 1: Kyle Leith with High Tide Combo
Game 1: He plays an island and moxes. I play first turn jug. He begins his silly combo. He asks if I scoop but I don’t because he has no way to play his tendrils unless he desires and hits it. He chooses to demonic for his tendrils. Great, but he still needs to figure out a way to play it with only one underground on the table. He gets frantic search and I die.
Game 2: We’re both doing really well and I have Kyle in topdeck mode while I have an active welder. He plays tinker without realizing he has already got his jar in his yard, so he gets colossus even when I have welder on the table. He has one card in his hand and showed it to me earlier (mind’s desire). This is when I misplay, instead of welding out his colossus, I weld in my titan and eat his lands, leaving him 3 islands. He topdecks rushing river for the win.
Round 2: Brian Phelon with Control Slaver
Game 1: I have hasty jugs but he has hasty angel. He has welders and I don’t.
Game 2: He mulls to five and hasty juggernaughts win.
Game 3: He has turn one welder. I have turn one trike. He rack and ruins. I have a lot of threats in hand so I start playing aggressively. He drains my juggernaught. He plays Welder and greaves. Next turn I play juggernaught and tinker for titan. All my creatures die and he starts swining with welder while I take crypt damage. We’re both low on life when time is called. Neither of us draw gas and welder puts me at four, when I take my final turn.
Round 3: Isreal Rivera with Cerebral Assassin
Game 1: Turn 1 Razormane Masticore. Isreal doesn’t have the animate to get his dragon or titan.
Game 2: He begins to build up a draw engine with bazaar and intuition for squee while I get a hasty angel. He responds with triple welder. I have trike in hand which I play, taking out his team. He tries to combo off but doesn’t have enough mana to yawg will and time walk enough times to kill my angel.
Round 4: Rich Shay (don’t even need to include what he’s playing)
I need to win this round and next to be 3-1-1.
Game 1: He triple thirsts three times very early. I have chalice for 2 and 3 and we’re both in topdeck mode. Eventually I play a chalice for 7. He finally gets a welder while I’m still drawing lands. I’m playing more threats and I have more draw spells left in my deck and all I draw is land and land. I was very disappointed.
Game 2: Turn one trike gets rack and ruined. He gets welders and I don’t.
I find an atog in a tradebook and I start looking around. The guy I’m trading with asks if I’m looking for Rich Shay. The resemblance is startling. Then I find out that Rich Shay was mispaired against me. Great.
Round 5: String Bean with STAX
We both can’t make it and play some fun games.
Game 1: He drops sphere so I have to pay 1 for my lotus. He does nothing for his next turn. I pay 4 for my crucible and get wastelock going. He finally thinks he has an out. He has crypt, and city of brass. He crop rotates for workshop to play smokestack but I remind him that he had to pay 2 for crop rotation.
Game 2: Mox, Mox, Shop, Masticore. He wastes. I discard angel and play welder. He does nothing. I start swinging and he starts blowing things up. In the end I have three permaments, Platinum Angel, Razorcore, Welder.
Workshop aggro sucks. I am never playing that pile again. Pete and I also have a discussion about type 1. It’s just not fun anymore. All those articles in the forums are right. The casualness has been bled out and it is less fun of a format.
Team Dubya’s List of Most Annoying Cards: (a) Goblin welder (b) tinker (c) oath of druids
I don’t mind Yawg Will but tinker bothers the shit out of me. I quote Rich Shay “Turn one tinker wins, Turn one will doesn’t. As for goblin welder, he just feels like cheating. And why did we list Oath of Druids? It was around the time that Orchard got printed that the format started becoming unfun.
