I am a former extended player who has inherited some older cards and has been playing extended long enough to have some force of wills, duals, etc.  I was wondering if i were trying to get into vintage what should i try and pick up through trades ebay etc.  I was thinking about trying to build one of the "cheaper" decks but i haven't decided yet so for the moment i am just playing an old MUC deck with no mana drains.  I want to know what things would be useful to pick up in general for a type one player.  Any suggestions would be very very helpful.

First of all, welcome to Vintage! I would suggest looking at the Restricted List. (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=judge/resources/sfrvintage) and pick up one of each card. Most of the cards on thta list are very reasonable ($5-$20). Obviously the P9+Library are uber expensive, but everything else is pretty fair. If you have the Forces and Dualies plus most of the restricted list, you should be in good shape to make any deck in a format that alows proxies. Good luck!

You have Forces and Duals?  Mana Drains.  Get Mana Drains.  Really it depends on which duals you have, but Mana Drains are some of the easiest paths to winning power.

I will break into your house while you aren't home and disguise myself as a chair. Then I will leave before you get home, but there will be a place at your table where I was a chair and you will wonder why there isn't a chair there. Then later I will leave the chair disguise on your doorstep and you will realize what has happened and you will be afraid all the time. Helter Skelter mother fuckers!

And it sort of matters which deck you would like to build. My advice to finding the right deck, test them. Proxy them up and play agaisnt local T1 players. Or play on MWS. Good Luck!! Razz

Oath is a cheap deck on 10 proxy.  You don't even need Drains depending on the version.

Trading for Type 1 stuff will be hard.  You will have to give about 20%+ extra on your trades because it is easier to trade down big stuff like drains rather than trying to trade up like you are doing.

From a long-term investment standpoint, the most stable investments are:
Black Lotus
Mox (any of the 5 from A/B/U)
Ancestral Recall
Time Walk
Library of Alexandria
Force of Will
Mana Drain
Underground Sea
Volcanic Island
Tundra
Tropical Island
Bazaar of Baghdad
Mishra's Workshop

From a budget deck standpoint, the best investments are:
Force of Will
Dual Lands
Oath of Druids
Goblin Welder
5 hundred billion different utility artifacts and creatures to use Oath and Welder with
Intuition
Gifts Ungiven
Accumulated Knowledge
Null Rod
Goblin Lackey and his cohorts
Artifact Mutation
Mox (Chrome or Diamond)
Demonic Tutor
Yawgmoth's Will
Animate Dead
Chalice of the Void
Worldgorger Dragon
Squee, Goblin Nabob
Wasteland
Strip Mine
Necromancy
Xantid Swarm
Sol Ring
Lotus Petal
Mana Crypt
Mana Vault
Forbidden Orchard
City of Brass
Gemstone Mine

Enjoy, this list is obviously terribly ordered and typed out in a hurry.  But I'm always there to help out a new player, especially one who is looking to purchase vintage cards (the most solid investment in magic you can make).  PM me if you've got any questions about applications for specific decks.

It depends on what you played and what you're up to.  If you're an old Extended player, you may want to try rocking it out with Food Chain Goblins; it will take very little cash to get you set up with that deck.  It's got a good combo finish and it beats Stax pretty well, especially with Artifact Mutations out of the board, and Stax is the deck to beat at the moment.

Past that, yeah, if you have Forces and Duals I'd start by taking a look at Oath.  With even 5 proxy you can get a good budget build out of it and it's the least Drain-reliant Drain deck in the format.  It's capable of pulling off some easy wins, and you have a lot of flexibility to build the deck.
