Well, according to the news looks like I am going to be without power for at least two weeks. Of course, if you listen to the News everyone in Louisiana is going to be under 25 feet of water. Just praying that once again the media is over sensationalizing a story...If not I guess you want see me making in post for a while  Sad

Anybody else here in the path of this Hurricane?

This storm is no joke, and cannot be understated.  If you are within 100 miles of the path of this storm, get out.  It is going to be one of the worst natural disasters in this nation's history.  Those of you who are religious, please keep the people of New Orleans in your prayers, as the city is going to end up under 10 feet of toxic water and there are still something like 100,000 people unable to evacuate.

I don't know your situation, but Klep is absolutely right. If you're in the path of the storm, you will lose much more than your power.

Hey man

for some reason I've been watching CNN up here in Vancouver, and it's round the clock coverage of Katrina. It looks pretty brutal. I strongly urge what Klep said to do and evac as soon as possible.

Hope you'll make it through in good shape.

I'm a student at Tulane, and have since evacuated.
Basically: Get out. Now.

Even the local newscasters were saying "Look, if you're still here and you're hearing this, get out."
-Dave

If you're not out, get to the Superdome ASAP. You might survive that way. Your property won't.

What shocks me is that I hadn't heard a word about this until yesterday. Don't these things usually have a huge lead-up?

If you are worried, why not open a safety deposit box at a bank, and place the cards in that for the time being.
It's not too expensive, and your cards have a lot better chance of surviving ...
But you should inquire on their insurance policy when it comes to "Cards" ... because I know that its 100% useless to insure your magic cards when sending via Canada Post because there is no way to "prove" their value (Please don't slash back and me and say I'm wrong because I'm after making several calls to Canada Post, and I'm having arguing with managers, and workers over the fact I should be able to insure my cards and be guaranteed to get my money back if something goes wrong).

Katrina strengthened really rapidly.  Saturday people were talking about it maybe being a 4 when it hit, but when I woke up yesterday it was a Cat 5.

It was basically at the upper limit of meteorological projections every day, due to a whole bunch of convergent factors (eg it hit a very warm patch of water in the gulf, which sped it up a lot).

Edit: also, do people just not understand that he's talking about ELECTRICAL power? Honestly.

Well Chris you seem to always enjoy getting into tense situations with me (we argued a bit in a thread awhile back about conspiracy theireos.) Telling you my age will most certainly give you doubts on my quailfications to speak on the subject i just made note of though it should not as that would mean you were judging me based on my demographic something i doubt you want to be accused of seeing as how you most likely pride yourself on your intellectual abilities (seeing as how you'r not fit physically, which is by no means an insult i am the same.) My age also seems irralavent when asking if I have any Knowledge on the effects of one particualr hurrican. There were 5 or 6 Hurricans just last season and your judeging me by my memory of one. I know alot of history and would even bet you that i may remember more of it then you do. I would certainly be willing to have some sort of history triva thing with you.

Sorry to go off on such a tangent like this but this is the second time Demonic Attorney has personally insulted me on these forms and I really hate people with condescending attitudes.

Oh and Chris I have lived on this earth for 16 years thus far, how old are you?

He was asking how old you are because Andrew hit Florida in 1992, when you were three. If you had been old enough to remember it, believe me, you would. He was in no way trying to insult you, although I notice you snuck in a few digs in that giant paragraph.

Also, the new software features a spellcheck function--use it. Your spelling and punctuation are atrocious, and that's a violation of TMD rules.

Now, let's get back on topic people. Any further responses to this tangent should be taken to PM.

Not trying to be insenstive but is it seriously going to be that bad. I mean I dont watch the news but...

The Twin Spans are gone, 80% of the city is underwater with some parts under as much as 20 feet.  Levee breaks upwards of a block and a half in length are reported in at least two places.  There are people trapped in their attics screaming for help at rescuers, who are mostly calling off operations until the morning due to the risks of rescue attempts at night.  The water is contaminated by sewage and cadavers, and downed live power lines and gas leaks abound.  The thousands of people stuck in the Superdome have no plumbing and no air conditioning, which is a big problem in the humid south, particularly when the wind stripped away the reflective white covering of the dome, leaving only black behind it.

This is just in New Orleans, and they got the easy side of Katrina.  Some coastal towns in Mississippi are effectively gone.

So to answer your question, yes, it is that bad.

EDIT: Now it's even worse.  The levee breaches are causing downtown to start flooding.  Water is currently rising at about an inch every 5 minutes.

At this point all of NO is effectively destroyed. As Klep said, 80% of the city is under water and it's going to take quite some time before it actually leaves.

Oh and gas prices? In certain places around my city it's already jumped 25-30cents to 3 dollars a gallon. Fuck.

Not to go off tangent here, but expect them to keep rising. A good portion of our oil refineries and imports came through the gulf regions, and they're effectively wiped out right now.

As for how bad it is, I've seen some absolutely horrific pictures, and I'm sure they're not the worst. Entire condo complexes have been leveled.

We should probably keep the poor souls in that area in our thoughts (and for the religious, in our prayers). It's expected to be at least 2 months before power returns to the area.

You guys are gonna have to be hit by more than just a hurricane for prices to rise to anywhere near what they're like over here. Three bucks a gallon hurts your wallet? Try 2.25 (!) times as much. We pay, converted to your units, 6.75 dollars/gallon. An' we don't need no stinkin' hurricanes for that Razz

As long as it's not racist or discriminatory, humor is called for in every situation, methinks.

Dutch media by and large seem to be reporting that the damage is 'not as bad as it could have been.' Things I've seen on the internet tell me otherwise.

Actually, in New Orleans, that's true.  NO was supposed to get hit directly, but the storm moved just a bit to the side.  It was predicted to be even worse than it is, which is impressive, considering just how bad it is. Sad

With the broken levees, though, they've got what NO's mayor called "the second-worst case scenario". Technically, it could be worse, but not by much.

You also hve an extensive public transportation system. Razz I would be surprised if you spent as much in a year on gas as we do, even with your higher prices!

I hope that was a typo for 'expensive public transportation system' Razz

I will grant you that in many cases, you guys porobably have to drive much more that we do, since many of your states are significantly larger than our whole country. Even so, my mileage is considerable. In a country of less than 16,000 square miles, I drive about 15,000 miles per year, which costs me about $ 3,500 USD in gas alone (I'm not even talking shit like regular maintenance, repaiers, oil, tires and shit). Also, because of our weird taxes, cars tend to be almost twice as expensive here to buy.

New Orleans is now effectively a post-apocalyptic wasteland.  Gangs are roaming the streets, looting stores and arming themselves with weapons from Wal-Marts and such, putting rescue workers in fear for their lives.  People still there are reverting to their most primal instincts.  The situation is going to continue to be very ugly for quite some time.  Before too long disease will break out as a result of the contaminated floodwaters, and when all is said and done the casualty totals are probably going to be much higher than any other disaster in the US in recent history.

They're sending in 10,000 National Guard troops to help.  That should provide additional rescuers and protection from gangs and potential rioters.
