Are they so collectible that it warrants this price?

Already got one of those.  Mine is savage.

EDIT: Ok, I'll be more useful.

I bought mine in 1999 or so, back at Pandemonium before it was Pandemonium.  It's quite nice, but it doesn't offer a lot of room to draw on.  Mine is almost maxed out. You can see it here:

They really are.
If you don't feel like forking out that much money, Khalsa Brain Games has some fairly nice ones, with plenty of room on them for modifications.  I have one of their older model gray ones (with Ed Beard's art for the border) with a killer rendition of a Psychatog on the center of it.

Most of their models only cost $15 or so.

I picked up 2 of them Sunday for $15 each. :shock:
I'm trying to see if it's worth putting them up on ebay. Wink
