Bloodsap Ivy
{1}{G}
Creature — Plant
3/1

Defender
Bloodsap Ivy can block as though it had flying.
Sacrifice a Forest: Regenerate Bloodsap Ivy.

***

I noticed that with Ravnica, the Golgari Guild has brought "Plant" to the forefront as a creature type. I wanted to create a card in homage of Carnivorous Plant. Since I didn't want to reprint it outright, my first thought was to create a 3/5 green creature that could block as though it had flying. Then it occured to me that with Defender, it would be 99% identical to Wall of Swords. Thus, I had to come up with something different. The idea I settled on was a 3/1 Defender with a regeneration ability. This is not at all set in stone, though. There are really only a few criteria that I want to maintain with this card:
1. I like the name and the creature type.
2. I want it to be a Defender that can block as though it had flying.
3. I want it to have at least 3 power.
Beyond that, I'd be happy with any number directions in which this card could go. In fact, I'd rather the abilities and numbers this has right now be placeholders, since I'm not very excited about them. Low toughness Defenders seem a bit pointless, but I also want this to operate differently than Wall of Swords.

Current Wording:

Bloodsap Ivy
{1}{G}
Creature -- Plant
3/1

Defender
Bloodsap Ivy can block as though it had flying.
{G}, {T}, Sacrifice a creature or land: Regenerate target creature or land.

Did you know that Red is the color or art and music and passion? Combine that with Green, the color of nature, spiritualism, and community and you get a hippie commune of drum circles, dreamcatchers, and recreational drug use. Let's see that win a Pro Tour.

It would be cool if this had a blocking-triggered ability.

I had considered that, but I did not want to tread on the toes of Bubble Spider. Once it was changed from Arnway's Archers to Bubble Spider, I fell in love with the card and I would really prefer not muscle in on its niche. That said, if this had an ability that triggered anytime it blocked, whether the creature it was blocking  had flying or not, I suppose it would be okay, as long as it's not a simple power/toughness gain, like Bubble Spider. Suggestions are welcome.

What if the regeneration triggered on blocking?

Or make it grow at the end of combat, perhaps a +1/+1 counter when it deals combat damage?

With the name i could see it gaining a +1/+1 counter everytime a creature it blocked was put into a graveyard. That is a very blood sapping effect although the ability is generally black's for vampires but  i believe this plant is close to a vampire judging by the name alone.

Another idea would be to make it so that everytime he blocks you may put a forest from your hand into play to play off the synergy with the second ability. This ability becomes useless at some point but its good early and maybe really late.

I think I like Jacob's suggestion the best. Gimbles and Fall-Titan, I had considered ideas similar to yours and I rejected them for the reason that Fall-Titan stated — they seem too black in nature to me. That said, although I like Jacbo's idea, I'm not crazy about it. It makes this sort of a reflection of Duskworker, but I don't know if that's really where I want to go with this. Do you  all suppose I might get away with something like...

{G}, {T}, Sacrifice a creature or land: Regenerate target creature.

It's a better ability than that of Tel-Jilad Lifebreather, Rushwood Herbalist, and Village Elder, but I think that's permissable, since it comes attached to a Defender.

Or better yet, give it this: {B}{G}, Sacrifice a creature or land: Regenerate target creature or land.

I'm wary of that solution, Gimbles. We make a disproportionate number of multicoloured cards. I would like to keep this one mono-green if possible.

Well then remove the black and add tap.  But I love the idea of regenerating land.

I have updated this card to have the ability that Gimbles suggested. I like this having a creature regenerating ability, since that makes the low toughness less of a drawback. Gimbles is right, though, that it's really cool for this also to have an ability that lets it regenerate lands.

{G}, {T}, Sacrifice a creature or land: Regenerate target creature or land.
