This isn't a battle who would win type thing. (which it will probably become)

I want the general opinion about which franchise people are more impressed with.

When I read this topic all I could about was how many times this battle has been argued.

For your premise, I think Godzilla is cooler and more impressive.

Godzilla is a product of man's environmental carelessness which returns to haunt us, a concept 50 years ahead of its time. Plus his plates glow when he takes out pylons (and who likes pylons?) or gets struck by lightning.

King Kong is an overgrown monkey (yea, yea, I know and you know what I mean)

i like zilla better, cept for that horrible movie with the new version back in the 90's. that sucked.
King Kong looks like it might be decent, so meh, we'll see what happens.

p.s.
wasn't there already a fighting movie done betwen the two though?

They're both pretty poor.

But as far as a fight goes: breathing fire > flinging your own feces (or whatever the hell King Kong does).

Um, neither.

I've never understood the obsession with ridiculously huge animals. In my opinion, the only thing we should be supersizing is Quarterpounder menus.

Godzilla. If you don't know why, you haven't seen Mighty Joe Young.

Toho did make a Godzilla vs. King Kong movie.

King Kong looked kind of crappy in that one (even taking into account the kind of effects you expect from those movies).

There's also two different endings.  The original Japanese version has Godzilla as the winner while the US version, by use of bad editing, has Kong the victor.

I really find King Kong more impressive.  I mean, look at the original King Kong graphics...they're freakin' awesome for when they were made!  Plus, it's full of symbolism.

However, as far as who is cooler, well just think about this:  King Kong is only a NEARLY impossible animal.  Godzilla is a COMPLETELY impossible animal.  Obviously Godzilla is cooler for being about as realistic as Superman!

King Kong is essentially a story about carelessness too: Skull Island is known to be a terrible place, they decide to take Kong out of the jungle where a massive wall had kept him from fucking up the world. Godzilla also doesn't raise any questions other than general concern for the environment in the context of nuclear proliferation.

Yes, and we all appreciate the paramount social importance of keeping massive gorilla's locked up on tropical islands over, say, the questionable morality of experimenting with nuclear arms on former colonies.

Well, if you really want to you can look at kong as a metaphor for colonialism if you really want to, white man's burden and all. Its like a reverse Kipling story.

Beauty didn't kill the beast.  Internalizing Eurocentric notions of beauty killed the beast.

Godzilla just makes a semi-practical speculation that careless nuclear proliferation could have nasty consequences. Hopefully, we already know that. Having a giant lizard fight a bunch of other giant things is just excessive.

Kong makes several meaningful assertions about Western culture as compared with nature.
