I forget at times that not everyone can post in the tourney forum.  Here is a thread for everyone to post in about Waterbury.

Here is what I have so far.  Many, many more updates to come.

PROXIES
As far as proxies go, each player will be entitled to 10 proixes included in the basic admission cost.  In addition, players may pay $1 per proxy for the ability to play additional ones with the maximum number of total proxies being 15.  Prior to the start of the tournament, when you bring up your decklist, a waterbury associate(not someone playing in the event) will check to see that you have the cards that are proxied indicated on your decklist.  At this time, you will present your deck to show the indicated number of proxies and pay at that time for additional ones past 10.  There are some who would be tempted to cheat this system.  Let it be said that each round there will be at least one random deck check(now possible with increased help).  Any player who is found to have more proxies than indicated on his decklist and/or paid for will receive a disqualification from the event without prize.  This may sound severe, but keep in mind that this is simply to prevent deception and people from abusing a privilege intended to benefit Waterbury and newer players(who may need slightly more proxies).  As long as you are on the up-and-up, you have nothing to worry about.

A proxy should not be distunguishable from a regular card in a sleeve except for the face.  This means no back markings, no cards backwards in sleeves, no abnormal thickness of papers in sleeves, no papers falling out of sleeves, etc.

Proxies must have all pertinent info written on them: Card Name, Casting Cost, Text, Power/Toughness, Etc

Best bet is to get some revised plains(they are plenty light), sharpie the front with all the info, and draw a quick sketch of the picture.  This will minimize your chance of having an inappropriate proxy.

If there is still doubt, ask at Waterbury when registering your deck.

Team rivalry, a.k.a. Braggin Rights Supreme JAN 2006

CURRENT REIGNING CHAMPS: TEAM NUTS AND STAFF OFF TWICE...If you haven't already seen the trophy they got in addition to about $90 in cards and other then you will see it at Waterbury.  The trophy is enormous, probabbly bigger than at least 1 or 2 waterbury participants!

Here is how its gonna go down.  Teams of three will agree prior to the event to play as a team and will register(seperate from a deck registration...it will be done on a different sheet of paper).  Each teams cost is $9...$3 per person.  Then, at the end of the tournament, the teams with the highest combined number of match points(top 16 matches-finals count as 3 points per match, just as in the swiss) will win.

If enough teams enter, there may be a second place prizes or more, but the number of teams entering, and thus the collected entry fees, will determine the prizes.  In the event of a tie for match points, the average opponent match win percentage of the three players on each team will be computed and compared.

After round 2 team designations will be inserted into players names, so teams may view each other team's players and match points on the pairings/standings.

At 10:00 GRAND MELEE MULTIPLAYER CHAMPIONSHIPS:
After the top 8 starts, in a fashion similar to the Type 4 Championships, we will play a Grand Melee Multiplayer event.  This event can be played by ANY number of players.  Players should bring a type 1 deck with them(for multiplayer or otherwise).  All players will sit in a huge circle around many tables.  To maintain order, the game will run with multiple players taking there turns at once. Active players will be represented with buttons(similar to a dealer button) passed around the table.  A player with the button may only attack the players immediately to their left or right.  All spells and abilities have a one person radius.  In other words: if player B is the active player with A to his left and C to his right, a nev's disk would only blow up these three player's permanents.  Accordingly, instants and effects can only be played when you, or a player to the right or left of you is the active player.  These player buttons will pass to the left.  Buttons will be held, if neccesary to avoid two buttons coming within range of one another.  As players are eliminated, so too will the number of buttons.  Last man standing wins.
Prizes: TBD based on number of players
Proxies will be allowed ...10 specifically...without the chance to buy more.
Entry: FREE!

ALSO: Throughout the day, the Third Tournament of Champions will take place.  The format will be multiplayer.  More details to follow.

For anyone who wants to come prepared with their decklist already filled out:

Have you considered a sword as a prize just like Kl0wn did once?

The sword was just for the Highlander tourney because it was appropriate. I think for a multiplayer, grand melee tourney, the more appropriate prize would be either a baseball bat with nails in it or a chainsaw.

Or most appropriately: A NUCLEAR BOMB!!

If anybody has any uranium 235 and some spare C-4 laying around, I'd be happy to construct one for an extra first-place prize. Oh, I'd also want like 20 bux for my troubles.

I'm tempted to come out of retirement and attempt to "live the dream" in the main event and the July '95 tourney really gives me a tingle in my groin, just like the last one did, even though I sucked out by going X-1-1. Those Land Tax on Land Tax matches take forever. I'm just concerned about somebody playing Necro/Fastbond/Drain Life/Soul Burn, although that deck shouldn't take less than a few turns to goldfish (probably like 3).

Don't worry.  I have already said ANYONE who travels to a Waterbury from Europe gets free entry, so bring friends, too.

Dunno. But I think that would be HILARIOUS. And free publicity too. Personally, I welcome any *attempted* FBI arrests. The Man has nothing on me.

Double check your answer...not only did I get a slightly different coefficient, but you shouldn't have an r in your solution.  Keep in mind that the answer for the largest volume is in terms of r^3 and the answer to the second part is r times an answer in terms of r^2.

I'm going to guess that I don't understand your order of operations there. You have two problems in your question, so I did this: (A/r) * B, where A and B are the two different answers. Should that be (A/r*B) instead? That might be my mistake right there. So here is the other answer:

Will participants still be allowed in the main event? Cuz I'm ready to blow everyone away Jason Zheng-style again. I know it's not April yet, but I'm ready to win this one.  Very Happy

Also, do we need to bring a deck to this? Someone told me that last time it was Urza Block draft or something.

However, Ray I dissapointed in the prize structure... Where is the foil asian CHOKE to be given to the highest seeded player to lose in the top 16??? That would be funny! And I do have an extra 1 if you consider this as an option.

Ok...with the holiday season done and gone, I finally have some time to put into updating the plans for this grandiose event.

Announcement #1
The room rate for this event has been set up for some time now, but you all might not be aware of it.  If you wish to stay overnight you can call the Marriott at 203-596-1000 and when you book your room(s) mention that you are part of the Magic: Tourney group and that there is a special rate set up for you.  If you experience any problems getting this rate(they tell you it is not available or that it is sold out...pm me...I'll do what I can to get you in.)
Please recall, all rooms must have at least one adult in the party.

Announcement #2
Concerning the July 1995 Tourney
- Mana Crypt is allowed as a Four-of
- Ante cards are Banned
- Falling Star and Chaos Orb are restricted.  Keep in mind people...the theme of this event is fun, but I would be happy to officiate each and any time an orb/star is dropped.
- In that theme of fun...You MAY rip up an orb/star under the following two conditions: It is a REAL VERSION of the card and you have a REAL VERSION to replace it immediately with.  No one took advantage of this at the last event, but I would love to see it happen.

Announcement #3
This may not make me popular with some of the gents, but after some incidents at the last Waterbury, I must say that alcohol is not allowed inside the game room.  What goes on elsewhere is totally game for you guys.

Announcement #4
Play TJ Whoopys Waterbury Game
http://www.themanadrain.com/forums/index.php?topic=26091.0

Announcement #5
The poker will not be an officially run thing.  For a number of reasons(most of all because it diverted my attention from running a terrific Day 2 magic event) I decided it just wasn't worth the time and effort involved.  Please note that this DOES NOT mean that you won't be able to play poker.  I will provide chips, cards, a table, dealer/blind buttons, a timer, a list of chip values, etc.  You just need to sit down with other people who want to play and play amongst yourselves.

Announcement #6
Last Magic Team Trivia was the biggest yet...20 or so people...I'm looking forward to it again.  If you are around for Day 2, you should seriously consider sticking around for it...ask anyone who played last time...it is fun whether you win or lose, it is free, and every team gets a prize.

Announcement #7
Just wanted to restate the proxy policy:

Announcement #8
Team rivalry, a.k.a. Braggin Rights Supreme JAN 2006

CURRENT REIGNING CHAMPS: TEAM NUTS AND STAFF OFF TWICE...If you haven't already seen the trophy they got in addition to about $90 in cards and other then you will see it at Waterbury.  The trophy is enormous, probabbly bigger than at least 1 or 2 waterbury participants!

After round 2 team designations will be inserted into players names, so teams may view each other team's players and match points on the pairings/standings.

Announcement #9
Byes:  Effective for any tournament anywhere in the world, the following will be the case:

The top finishers(top is a relative word based on the size of the event) of ANY Type 1 Tournament in the world will be rewarded with the ability to purchase a round one bye at the upcoming Waterbury TMD Open seperate from any prize the TO is giving, The following guidelines are to be considered:
1.) The tournament must have at least 25 people.
2.) If the tournament has between 25 and 49 people, the winner may purchase a bye for $10.
3.) If the tournament has between 50 and 74 people, the winner AND/OR the 2nd place finisher may purchase a bye for $10 each.
4.) If the tournament has 75+ people, the top 4 players may purchase a bye for $10(this will mainly be SCG events)
5.) If the tournament has 100+ people, the top 8 players may purchase a bye for $10(this will mainly be SCG events)

To make sure this system is not abused, however, the following must be provided as proof that the person did, in fact, win the tournament:
a.)The tournament must have a thread posted on TMD(or some other reliable site) with a post from the TO stating that the person was the winner.
OR
I receive an email from the TO stating that the player won the event.

b.)I will need the player's full name and email address.

The sooner this information is received, the better, however all information must be confirmed by me prior to October 10 for it to be accepted.  Payment must also be made by this date.

ALSO, a TO can still offer byes as prizes in one of two ways.  They can purchase either a round one bye without entry for $10 or a round one bye with entry fee for $30.  These can only be use as prizes for:
1.) Part of a first or second place prize if the tournament has between 15 and 39 people.
2.) Part of any top 4 place prize if the tournament has between 40 and 64 people.
3.) Part of any top 8 place prize if the tournament has 65+ people.

Any TO's wishing to purchase a bye must contact me prior to the day of the event for which the bye is being offered, though payment doesn't have to be received until after the tournament takes place, since if the tournament does not meet the minimmum number of players and the bye cannot be awarded, the TO will not be charged.

So as you can see, the bye is a merit based award, as intended, whose cost can be on the shoulders of either the player or TO, and which can go down further in the top 8 only as the size of the event increases.

Wow there will be SOOOO many questions in that multiplayer game that will just confuse everyone... Giving Orlove a new definition of the work headache.

I have a few questions on the multiplayer:

1.) Sharazarad affects only 2 people next to me?

2.) I can only use the door to nothingness on people to my left or right?

3.) If I am able to achieve something like Infinite mana with metalworker/staff/quanar... and have a way to instantly kill everyone... (I kill people to my immediate left/right... use more infinite mana... Kill new people to left/right... rinse/repeat... will that work or will there be restrictions of infinite stuff???) or are we assuming that people just wont let that happen... or let you live long ennough to set that up?

4.) Divine intervention??? Cards that say you win game??? Cast one = eliminate opponents next to you... or just say your winner and then keep playing to lose knowing ur a winner?

You bring up good points...

I'm gonna take a stab at these house rules.  I welcome any opinions on how to revise them to make them better and I invite you to come up with other good things to consider like what Kyle has done.

1.) Shaharazard will be banned in this event.

2.) Door is perfectly legal and kills either to the left or right

3.) On any given turn you may kill only one person to the left and one person to the right

4.) Cards that say "You win the game" are errated to say..."the players to your left and right both lose"

Also...
Proxies will be allowed ...10 specifically...without the chance to buy more.

I will try to think of some more questions for the multiplayer that may help the event run more smoothly. If I think of anything good/interesting I will let you know.

Another quick question is Do you lose the game if you get decked??? This tournament could last pretty long, and alot of library's could run out... Would it be smart to run an 80ish card deck+... Or are you allowing people to get decked out to try to create risk/reward of having a more efficient deck that risks the possibility of being decked.

Also when are we going to put up the Waterbury Bingo??? I know it is a pain to do, but I am sure that you can find a volunteer to find out who winds.

The simple rule for those multiplayer questions is to leave an empty space when a person dies, that only disappears when their next turn rolls around. This also lets you remove excess turns without taking them away from anyone--if you go from six people and two turns rotating around to five people, you need to drop to one turn so that you don't have someone who is within the effects of two turns at once. Keeping the extra space until it gets a turn avoids that.

Getting decked means you lose the game as a state-based effect, so if you're concerned, prepare for it.

For the Team event rating:  This is an awesome idea, and I'm really excited about Waterbury.

The Vintage Avant-Garde//  Brian DeMars, Josh Franklin, Paul Nicolo.

Bring it.

One quick question Ray:

Our team has two byes already, do we get points for that right off the bat?  I mean, Does my team already have six points before the event even starts???

a first round bye is a win and 3 points in your teams pocket for each win so you start off with 6 as a team, but then again, so does my team :>  good luck defeating the reigning champs!

I had a rules idea to foil stupid combo decks. I'll call it "Planeswalker Sickness". It takes effect when two players who were previously too far apart to interact come within range of one another. Neither player can play spells or abilities that target the other until they have been within range since the beginning of their most recent turn.

So, you can still attack them, have them split your FOF piles, destroy their permanents, but you can't kill them with your reuseable infinite combo--not right away, at least.
