Thinking about picking up some Collector's Edition power 9 cards.

Do they count towards your proxy count when you enter a tourny? (Not that I ever have been to one, or plan to.  just good to know).

They're as playable in proxy events as the gold-bordered World Championship cards are in sanctioned events.

So if the event allowed 10 proxies, and you had the entire power 9 as CE versions, you'd still have 10 proxies avaiable?

It depends on the tournament rules, really.

Collector's edition cards do not count as real magic cards, ever.  So, if the particular tournament you are playing in said you could use them as proxies, then they count towards your ten proxies or whatever (I find it unlikely that a tourney would allow this, but it could happen).

What JD was getting at was that the gold bordered World Championship cards are not at all legal in sanctioned tournament.  Thus as the WC cards are unplayable as real cards in a tourney, so are the CE cards.

Of course, if it's a sanctioned tournament (One registered with Wizards of the Coast), then there are no proxies allowed at all.  This is because Wizards cannot endorse proxies.

In short, don't run out and buy the CE cards hoping to play them in the place of real power.

Hope that helps.

Most events do not permit CE cards to be used at all, even as proxies.

CE cards will never be legal, as normal cards or as proxies.

So you're saying I'd be better off using color copies pasted onto normal cards to use casually and save $80 for each mox.  Sad

Yep.

If you can get CE cards cheap, though, do it, because you can sell them on Ebay for actual cash, because some people actually believe they might become legal.  I don't know why, but some people do, so they hoarde them up like nothing else.

I guess that brings another question.

Practically, with opaque sleeves, for all purposes to function while playing a game, there's no reason they can't be able to be used legally if they decided to wave their magic rules wand.

Unless, did they specifically state that the CE cards would never become legal when they released them?

The thing that makes the CE cards unplayable isn't the gold-bordered backs, but the square corners.

And yes, CE cards were intended to never become tournament-legal, hence the corners and different backs.

I woulnd't do that either.  Normally pasting copies onto another card dramatically changes the feel and thickness of the card.

You might be looking at marked cards at that rate.

The easiest and most widely accepted method of creating proxies is probably to write on a basic land.  Instructions for this can be found here:

Others sometimes print directly on a peeled foil card.  This requires a little more dedication and time.
