Excavated Capsule
 {1}
Artifact
When Excavated Capsule comes into play, put 2 time counters on Excavated Capsule.
When Excavated Capsule comes into play, search your library for a card , then shuffle your library and remove that card from the game.
At the beginning of your upkeep remove a time counter from Excavated Capsule. If you can't, sacrifice Excavated Capsule, return a card removed from the game with Excavated Capsule to your hand.

Sort of like a 'later' or timed tutor like Long-Term plans. But I got tired of it wrecking your draw phase. So I made this in the same vein of the card-dsiadvantage tutors, but instead of the card disadvantage it's only time disadvantage. In addition it's capable of being destoryed before you get the card. Any suggestions to clean some of the text or power level? Remember if you play this turn 1, you won't be getting the card you search for until turn 4. Hence I think the cheap cost is justified.

Heh.  It could be destroyed, and the card you tutor for might not be so necessary down the road: best-laid plans of mice and men and whatnot.  The casting cost is fine and could maybe be zero- good card.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'd prefer that not every color can tutor for any type of card, so I'd like it to be a 1cc enchantment. Any color but red, and maybe not green, would be fine.

Instead of having it CIP with counters and count down, you can have it come into play empty and build up to a certain number, which avoids having to have two separate CIP triggers.

I agree that this should be colored though, blue or black. Also, looking at Long-Term Plans, I would probably push for a cost of 2.

Why not add something like:

2(U/B): Remove a counter.

That would be really hot, actually, although I'd make it something like UB, so you can actually play the ability if you drop the card first turn.

I don't think it's bad to make this a 1cc artifact.  Yeah it gives everybody a tutor but it takes 3 turns to trigger and your opponent could do something bad like Oxidize it, oh nos.  As far as an artifact that functions as a tutor, I think this is a pretty interesting way to execute it.  I'm liking the colored activation cost idea as well.

Why not exactly? Blue and black ALWAYS get the tutors. What does green and red have that are really worthwhile to tutor for? This can give the limited amount of decks not in black or blue a strategic plan (Turn 1 capsule to set up a plow under later in the game).  Like at least as a limited artifact it can serve some purpose and make it different from other tutors. It also magnifies the number of ways it can die, making it's advantage of being open mana-wise is an actual drawback in some cases.
Why not add something like:

2(U/B): Remove a counter.

I do like this, but I'd lower it to (2 colored mana). Thoughts before I make the change reflected on the card?

Because I feel the color pie exists for a reason, and I don't like artifacts bleeding into color defined territories. Artifacts have their own niche of design space, and I feel it takes away from the individuality of each color if all the colors. Saying that, I am happy with giving this a colored activation cost, I think that is a goo dsoluiton to this card.

Oh man , totally missed that Orlove. Good call.

@asm: Planar Portal. The only difference is I'm making a tutor card that doesn't suck.
