Damn, so many to choose from... Let It Be is my favorite, but I also really like Lady Madonna and Come Together.

A lot of their solo work is really good, too. Lennon and McCartney were/are awesome, of course, but Harrison did some great songs as well, and even Ringo's stuff was perfectly acceptableTM. Very few bands are worthy of even being mentioned in the same breath of that level of awesomeness.

I can't really select an album, since I'm more of a fan of individual songs of theirs, but Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was/is very good.

Oh, man. I love the Beatles. They're amazing. If I had to pick one song, I'd go with "Here Comes the Sun." It isn't easy to be in a bad mood after listening to that one. But what I really admire is their musical range and how well they can express feelings through their music.

Blackbird
Revolution 1
and
The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill,

I think five really stand out as my favorite Beatles songs, even though I love them all:

1.  Love You Too  (Revolver)'
2.  Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds  (Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band)
3.  Maxwell's Silver Hammer (Abbey Road)
4.  Strawberry Fields Forever  (Magical Mystery Tour)
5.  Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band  (Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hears Club Band)

Probably in that order, too.

As for my favorite Beatles ALBUMS:

1.  Revolver, no question.
2.  Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
3.  Abbey Road

And all the rest are amazing as well, but I REALLY love Revolver for some reason.  Every song on it is wonderful for me.

Abbey Road, and the entire second side is really one song, so I'll go with that.

Failing that, For No One.

Abbey Road, without question best album they did, and one of the best albums ever.

Coming in second would have to be the magical mystery tour album.

My favorite song wass going to be You Never Give me Your Money, but then Smmenen said Happiness is a warm gun, making the choice harder.

"Any jobber, got the sack, monday mornin' turning back, yellow lorry slow, no where to go. But oh that magic feeling, no where to go."

That line just makes the entire album worthwhile. I just love how that song builds.

On the other hand, Happiness is a Warm Gun is such a well done song, so complicated, and their are interesting pieces of it nearly every second. I just love the end, with the "Bang Bang Shoot Shoot" being repeated in the back ground, its just so well done.

So, I guess its a tie between the two.

But if you were to ask me what "earlier" album I like, it would be rubber soul. its really not that bad at all. as for later albums, i like white album, though to listen to one all the way through, abbey road.

Rubber Soul and Revolver are really the transition albums between old and new beatles.

No its on the White Album.  But it is written by George Harrison.  In many ways White is like a compilation of Solo stuff from Paul, John, and George.

Also, for good Paul is dead Symbolism check out Glass Onion.  Lots of goodies in there.

Yeah. definitely. Also in movies- in magical mystery tour when they are dancing wearing tuxedos, Paul is wearing a black rose and everyone else has a red one.

Which song is it again where John says "I buried Paul" when played backwards?

'Honorable mention to "Yesterday" which may be the most perfect song ever written.

Okay, I used to know all the paul is dead symbolism, but here's the stuff I can remember:

The Story was that Paul was supposed to have, during Sargent Pepper's, been riding his scooter (or was he ina car? one or the other), when he was distracted by a pretty lady, ran a red light, and was hit by a car. In actuality, Paul was actually in a minor scooter accident at the time, but nothing fatal. According to the myth, He was supposed to have been unrecognizable, so they hired some guy (can't remember his name) to take his place. The references were:

1. Lovelly Rita- He was supposed to have been distracted by a meter maid
2. She's Leaving Home- "Wednesday at 5 o'clock as the day begins" was when Paul was supposed to have been hit
3. Strawberry Fields- At the end, it sounds like John says "I buried Paul". In actuality, you can here what he really said on the Anthology, where its cleary "Cranberry Sauce"
4. Good Mornin' - "Nothin to do to save his life, call his wife in" -Self Explanatory
5. A Day in the Life- "He blew his mind out in a car, he didn't notice that the lights had changed. A crowd of people stood and stared, they'd seen his face before" Paul not noticing the light had changed, people gathering around his body, since he looked familiar, but his face was unrecgnizable as Paul.
6. I Am the Walrus- Played backwards was supposed to say Paul is Dead. Also, on the Album cover, Paul is the one dressed up as a Walrus, the walrus being a noweigian symbol of death (Or so I'm told)
7. The Cover of Sargent Pepper's is supposed to have a crashed car somewhere on it, I don't remember the details of this one.
8. In the Magical Mystery Tour movie, as stated above, when they are singing "You Mother Should Know", Paul has a black Rose, everyone else has a red one.
9. In the White Album booklet, there is a picture of Paul dancing. If you look at it, there is a skeletony hand reaching out at him. Its actually pretty plainly there and kinda creepy once you notice it.
10. Also in the white album booklet, there is a picture of Paul with a moustache. This is supposed to be the guy that they hired to be Paul before he changed his appearance to look the part.
11. Glass Onion- "The Walrus was Paul"- Again, referencing that Walrus is a norweigian symbol of death (Could also have an eskimo symbol, I don't remember)
12. Long, Long, Long- At the end, it sounds like George is moaning "Paul! Paul! Paul!"
13. Don't Pass Me By- "You were is a car crash, and you lost all your hair" Fits the conspiracy quite nicely.
14. Abbey Road's album cover shows the four walking the street. John is supposed to be dressed as God, Ringo as the Preacher, George as the Gravedigger, and Paul as the corpse. Also, Paul is out of step with everyone, has no shoes on, and has his cigarette in his nondominant hand (All symbolic! I guess)

Yeah, so draw your own conclusions. Actually, don't. The whole thing was stupid, and most of these can easily be explained away. Anyways, I proved I am a Beatles nerd, now I'll go hide.

I am almost 100% sure Eric Clapton played guitar on that track even though Harrison wrote it.

Also I suggest many Beatles fans should check out Deep Purple's cover of Help its REALLLY GOOD.

When it comes to sheer writing, I still feel strongly that the Beatles are horribly over rated.

They made great pop songs.  Now, let's hear Ringo do a drum solo... Wait...  He needs somebody...

The Beatles music does what it intends to do.  That's why it's good.

The overarching sentiment of this entire thread is the same.

"Here Comes the Sun" gets you out of depression.  It's INTENDED to do that.  Look at the name of the song.

Hey Jude is an epic, and it has a feeling of grandness.  Yesterday makes you awe-struck and somber.

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds takes you on a roller coaster and jumps out at you like a beautiful woman on the chorus.

Other bands attempt to do things with people's emotions, and some are very good, and others are not.  While heavy metal gets you pumped up, and emo brings you back down (as examples), those genres can usually only do those two things.

The Beatles can do it all.  And they're good at doing it all.  And it's musical.  It's melodic.  It gets stuck in your head.  It has a quality to it.  That lost quality.  It's like uncovering buried treasure, or seeing a robin hatch.  It's new, and robust, and it's amazing no one's ever thought of it before.

Who could have thought of the melody of Lady Madonna?  No one, because they would have.  It's a simple song, easy to play, easy to listen to.  The drums and piano are loud, John is practically yelling in the song, but it's a song that makes you think, and saddens you just a bit.

It has that twinge of greatness enveloped in it - the greatness that made the Beatles legends.

I'm sorry you can't hear it.

Bear in mind that a lot of the stuff Lennon and McCartney wrote was basically album filler for the sake of getting another album onto the market as quickly as possible. Despite that, when they were on, they were really on, and even a lot of their filler is still better quality than most bands were capable of. The other thing to remember is that they were first. Obviously there were bands and solo acts before them, but when the Beatles came onto the scene, there wasn't really much in the way of established guidelines, so they had to create a lot of them, much as Mozart heavily influenced those who followed him in Classical music. A lot of their stuff seems cliché now, but when they were doing it, it wasn't cliché, it was new.

Where Evenpence says John, he means Paul Very Happy.
