Go Slovakia Go !  Mr. Green
<3 Switzerland too

Weird tournament though, with USA losing to Slovakia, Canada to Switzerland, and Czech Republic with 2 losses already... My bet goes for Japan winning the gold medal, beating Kazakhstan in the finals Rolling Eyes

Yeah, it's only one of the biggest sport events ever. I've heard some people watch the superbowl to. What's that all about?

Ice hockey is the only real sport anyway.

Let's see your guys beat Қазақстан first. Those semi-Russians are well 'ard. Plus, they've only had a national anthem for a little over a month now, so they're probably keen on getting in some practice Razz

Every other network channel and a lot of cable channels in the US has higher ratings than the Olympics. Nobody watches it in America.

for me personally, several factors have made the Olympics not as big of a draw:

- The fall of communism/Iron Curtain.  When I was younger (I'm 28), it was always an "us vs them" type mentality and all then political competition bled over into sports.  Now, there's no real "them"...

- Commercialization - everything now is about marketing and money (or maybe I'm just older now and realize it for what it is)

- professional athletes being allowed to play - when the point of the Olympics was about amateur athletes who worked up to their whole life for this, it was far more appealing than overpaid athletes who for the most part didn't really want to be there (at least for American athletes).

Plus, I really hate any sort of "judged" sports, it's such a sham most of the time.  They decide who's year it is and that small group will come out near the top regardless of what others do (unless they totally botch it).

Yeah, I guess that's true. But there's also an innovation that DID work out for the best. See, in the (ancient) past, the Olympics were a time where mankind put aside its differences for a while while it played competitive sports. These days, however, this unwritten rule is largely unobserved. That means we can have war AND major sporting events simultaneously! How cool!

The problem is, if Slovakia win the group, they'll probably get the Czechs! (although Czechoslavakia split in a far more civilised way than Yugoslavia, there was a little bad blood regarding hockey as Slovakia were 'relegated' a couple of divisions and Czechs routinely joked that when they split the hockey team, the Czechs got the players and the Slovaks got the pucks). Even finishing second probably gives Slovakia the Canadians.

I'm pretty sure the USA want Switzerland so are trying hard to come 4th. Cunning tactics.

Not that I'm a fan of pretty men or anything, but has anyone noticed that most hockey players look like they are routinely smashed face first in a wall?

I'm tipping Sweden (losing 5-0 to Russia must have been tactical) or Canada (assuming they don't get Slovakia in the quarter-finals).

P.S. Regarding sport that need judges to decide who wins. WTF?  I can kind of see the point with ski jumping as the guy who jumps the longest tends to win anyway and they do want to try to make sure they attempt to land safely (some nutter would probably try to get a few metres more by landing long jump style) but dancing on ice is a sport? Couldn't they let them prance around during an unimportant hockey game, then we'd see how good they are a skating!

The funny thing is, so do all of my friends. It's basicly the only winter sport we are willing to watch except hocky (and some of the downhill stuff)

I love short track speed skating. That is one crazy intense sport. I also watch figure skating for the jumps, particularly if anyone attempts quad axels

And even though I'm a big hockey fan, its hard to be excited about the Canadian team at the olympics - they are not really a "team" (as opposed to merely being a group of highly talented individuals that might or might not gel on ice), and the expectancy is so high that the only thing that becomes really exciting is if they have some failures (like they have experienced over the past two games) and then show their character and bounce back.

This is exactly why beyond the original 1992 Dream Team for the USA Basketball team, that olympic sport holds no real entertainment value anymore for me.  It's basically our really-talented-bunch-of-NBA-players-who-don't-play-as-a-team vs other nations's teams (who play together for months for the most part).  It worked in 92 because the skill gap was SO wide, but now when the rest of the world has basically "caught up" in individual skill (esp with International rules that favor actual shooting and passing that many NBA players lack or lack playing against), their team play pushes them over the edge.

Is curling ACTUALLY a cult sport or is that just what MSNBC is trying to shill it has in order to get people to watch the like 24 hour nonstop coverage of it that they seem to have?  I know that it's big in Canada but I'm not seeing where this "cult" is.

It is a sport that uses brooms!!!  Do you see how fast those guys can sweep?  I really want to see a story about how an olympic curler was just a janitor a few years ago in some grocery store in Cedar Rapids Iowa ala Kurt Warner.

Meh, I'm in Maine, so thats basicly Lonnie Land anyways.
BTW, me and my fraternity brothers were watching the US womans team the other day, and noticed that at least half of the team could be considered attractive. Thats another bonus. Apparently there is a nude calender out also. score.

Did anyone watch the games last night? Sweden decided to lose to Slovakia so they'd play Switzerland rather than Canada or the Czechs (given the fact that Switzeralnd only just managed a draw with Italy they might have a point) and Russia tried really really hard to lose against the USA for the same reason.
Anyway the quarter-finals are

Slovakia vs. Czech Republic
Russia vs. Canada
Sweden vs. Switzerland
USA vs. Finland

I haven't seen much of the Finns but they have won all of their games. Is this yet another Finnish team that looks great but disappoints when they get to the final stages?
