Hey guys, what a great tourney!

37 players showed up (would have been even more but we had several at least get the time wrong, and a couple of guys doing their usual lazy stuff (*cough *cough brent and manny *cough)

The tournament started more or less close to on time, heh...6 rounds of swiss with cut to top 8.

Top 8 lists are up on www.eudemonia.net/p9

TT Confidant
TT Confidant
Dark Gifts
Dark Gifts
Long
Long
CS
5cStax

The whole meta breakdown is lost, lol...youd have to ask Eudemonia, but it was a lot of just about everything...

There were at least 4 or 5 Long decks (if not one or two more) 2 or 3 Belcher decks, a lot of drains, and a few stax and oath in the mix, with a lot of other random decks in the mix.

I myself played Grim/Litz Long and went 2-2 then dropped to play in the side (with medium tie breaks I wouldnt make it in even with winning out..) I played great two rounds, and extreemly poorly two rounds, but it was my first ever time playing combo like this and it was a great learning experience, I had a blast.

Major props to the entire NorCal group for making a great showing at the event!

We even had like 4 guys from Reno and another 4 or so from SoCal make the trip!

There was also a suggestion for a T1 side event for those dropping or late to play. This was a great idea for whoever requested it, we got 12 players to play in the side. Top 4 for that looked like;

UR Stax
GAT
TPS
Gifts Flame/Vault

As always, lots more info coming in @ http://norcalmagic.proboards79.com

Props:

The players!

Team Reno for making a showing, along with the SoCal guys!!!

Joshua Silvestri for coming out of retirement (heh) to play some T1!

Combo for wrecking the meta up a bit, heh

Eudemonia for another great event!

Slops:

Brent and Manny for all the obvious reasons

Jeff for getting the starting time wrong and showing up late, lol..

Me for making awful play mistakes in two rounds (although props to me for giving it a shot, heh)

See you all next time!

My list is actually not TT confidant. It's still drain-based with bob and a tendrils kill but has dfferent elements than TT confidant which is more comboesque, running more bounce and mind's desire, etc. Still, close enough.

The list is just something I made up on friday.

It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside when I see people do well with Gifts/Confidant.

I went with TT Confidant as the name David because thats what its closest too, and there are no deck names listed anywhere that I can find for your list....either from Pro Star or Eudemonia...TT Confidant seems pretty close to the base archytype that you were using...But feel free to actually give a name for it...Confidant TPS or Dark TPS or BA Confidant or whatever the heck you wanna call it.

Its even hard giving the different names to your deck and the "Dark gifts" decks becuase about the only difference is yours runs Intuition and theirs runs Gifts...other than that they are extreemly similar.

How about TT Confidant-ish?  Razz

Yea, Brent, Luis, Manny, Eirik, and Matt had come over to my house on Saturday to play/make a deck/etc. The actual process of making their decks was somewhat interesting. At one point, we were looking at an AK/gifts/bob/cunning wish/burning wish deck with a 25 card SB so some stuff had to be cut... I had already decided on what I was going to run and only made a +2 merchant scroll addition at the last moment. They ended up going down a slightly different path with gifts + red like the cowards they are. REAL men don't need red to hide behind the three R's (REB, rack&ruin, recoup)  /end sarcasm.

But realistically, mana drain-based control decks like what we played have a set number of cards: 4 fow, 4 drain, 4 brainstorm, ancestral, mystical, time walk, yawg will, dt, 3-4 bob, 7 solomoxen, academy, 4-6 fetch 2-4 duals, 3-6 basic, etc. The rest is where the decks diverge and you get to fill in the blanks with whatever you want so the variances in the decks are minor. Adding to the deck similarity is also the fact that we feel somewhat the same on certain card choices for some variable slots which ended up making appearances in all our decks.

The deck I have been playing lately and Webster's deck are only different by one card...That is amazing.

To me the difference between going the UB Intuition route is that you are less dependent on using Yawgmoth's Will to win. I am not sure if that necessarily makes it better, but I seem to do better in my testing with the Intuition engine as opposed to the Gifts for that very reason. Maybe it forces me to be patient which causes me to make less play erorrs, who knows.

I liked the idea of not relying heavily on will to win. I mean, I _do_ win with it often enough, however, the will is merely the nail in the coffin usually because I have outdrawn my opponent and generating storm through will is easier than rebuild because I don't have enough moxes out already.

I liked the intuition/AK draw engine more than thirst because I wanted to draw cards and maintain the mana superiority in the mirror so I wouldn't have to hold on to a mox as cautiously as if I were playing with thirst for knowledge. Intuition also had an overlapping synergy with how I was planning to play against certain matchups and sideboard strategies which is why i eschewed from the gifts route.

Congrats on your new piece of power, David. Will you be at Pro Star? You probably vaguely remember me from MODO/PTLA LCQ/Eudemonia, so I'll introduce myself again while I'm up there (back from UCSD on spring break next weekend, etc). Brent says that your scary intense game face is not indicative of who you are, so I'll take his word for it Razz

If you don't mind me asking, what were the Engineered Plagues for? Goblin Welder, I assume (but isn't that what Darkblast is for?).

Yes, I will be at Pro Star, and yes, I remember playing against you in the LCQ; it was round 1 and you were playing U/G kudzu.

The plagues were for oath + random stuff, not CS. I don't really bother playtesting so it's just theory with what I have to work with and I haven't played against oath yet so I don't know if my post board game plan + plagues is better than, say annul and a different game plan.

I was very very happy to see 2 completely different "long" decks in the top 8 (especially since smemmen got top 8 too @ richmond w/ grim long and GWS tendrils is all the hotness...maybe combo is back for good for a bit!!!! we can hope anyways)

Great job on the result Pat!!!
