I had been fooling around with workshop decks again the past month, I made a top 8 with my workshop combo that was the most fun to play. How many times can you go first turn: black lotus, dark ritual, strip mine, necropotence, metalworker.
I had workshop slaver made on MWS forever but it was lacking some kind of disruption that didnt kill my hand. I was running force of will, but after the past 3 weeks in tournaments I swapped out the forces and added duress and also an imperial seal. Duress has been a house against drains, and its a million times better then me losing a draw spell to defend another with a force of will.
I also love minds desire way too much to not include it in a deck. It proved its worth, hitting 6 desires over 10 and several more under 10 throughout the day.
Workshop Slaver 2k6 4 mishras workshop 3 polluted delta 3 volcanic island 2 underground sea 2 island 1 swamp 1 tolarian academy 1 library of alexandria 5 mox 1 mana vault 1 mana crypt 1 lotus petal 1 black lotus 1 sol ring 2 gilded lotus
1 sundering titan 1 triskelion 3 goblin welder 1 gorilla shaman
2 mindslaver 1 tinker 1 minds desire 1 yawgmoths will 1 ancestral recall 1 memory jar 1 mystical tutor 1 demonic tutor 1 vampiric tutor 1 imperial seal 4 brainstorm 1 chain of vapor 4 duress 4 thirst for knowledge 1 time walk
round 1: Gary AKA doomhed with intuition gifts.dec - gifts. win 2-0 Game 1: I got to draw a few extra cards with library, but when he tinkered coloss out I had to finally do something. I had a hand with 4 mana accelerants a minds desire, demonic tutor, a duress and a chain of vapor, but I forgot to draw a card from library before I started playing cards. Regardless, I played duress and he showed me 2x force of will 2 AK and an intuition, I took force. I dropped all my artifacts and chain of vapored the coloss meeting force 2, however, I was 1 mana short of casting desire at this point so I tutored for time walk and took an additional turn. I drew either brainstorm or thirst the next turn and found tinker for memory jar which had yawgmoths will in it and I finally won game 1 after fizzling my first desire attempt. Game 2: I tinkered for sundering titan early taking out some lands and Gary didnt have enough time to recover.
round 2: Sara Yarrington-baker of the best cookies with threshold smashy win 2-0 She was playing green/white wearbear smackdown so my gameplan was to just get titan into play as soon as possible. Both games she couldnt do much because titan came into play early both games.
round 3: Nathan with control slaver lose 0-2 Game 1: I duress him and see he can cast first turn triskelion, also he has mana to cast rack and ruin. I take his vamp tutor. He plays first turn trisk and passes the turn, I have a hand with a welder and a gorilla shaman a duress as well as mindslaver a volcanic and a workshop. I play workshop and pass the turn, he swings for 4 and passes. I draw mana crypt and play volcanic and pass. He hits me for 4 again and passes with 3 cards in hand. I draw workshop and now have enough mana to cast the slaver play the crypt and use slaver on his dome. But like a noob I fuck it up, because I forget to duress him first. I knew he had the rack and ruin in hand, which was a non issue because I could just use the slaver in response. But he drew force of will, then blue card in the 2 turns he drew cards. He let the slaver resolve but forced the mana crypt. But it didn't matter because I fucked this game over beyone belief by not casting duress first. I would have had him slave locked next turn because trisk would have 0 counters and his rack and ruin would have targeted his own shit. but on to game 2 Game 2: he doesn't have much gas and plays 3 welders out on the board. while not drawing anything, I eventually try to cast a triskelion which got countered or something and I lead it up to a game winning Yawg will, I recast the trisk with 2 shops and wipe 3 of his welders. I end up with a tinker for titan along with a welder, but I had no more artifacts in the yard from it being a Y will turn. He untaps draws and casts thirst for knowledge, discards mana vault and welds his sol ring for lotus, and casts demonic tutor which finds will, which casts tinker for trike that kills me since I'm at 2 life. It's so depressing to lose to 1 of 2 outs he has to win the game. It's like he took personal control slaver lessons directly from Rich Shay. I was heated after this match, but it was only fitting this player was the same one who gave me my only match loss at the waterbury I won in october. Â
Round 4: Ryan Durney with U/R fish Win, either 2-0 or 2-1 dont remember All I know about this match, is that Durney is an overconfidant type 2 player that can't handle swimming with the big boys in a T1 tourney. Terrible plays like tinker--->Titan are too "broken" and that you need to get "Lucky" to have any chance to beat him. NEXT ROUND
Round 5: Jason with SSB win 2-0 I know Jason, and I lost to him when he played meandeck tendrils months back. I don't remember game 1 that well, only that I won pretty quick possibly with a big desire, but game 2 I got a desire for 13 to resolve on turn 3 on a yawg will turn, he was just going to scoop when I cast the will but I wanted to play it out to see what I would get.
round 6: ID with Greg Hughes
top 8: quarter finals:Gagooch with his gifts.dec win 2-0 This was a fast match, even though Dan and me are friends, I still felt a little bad. I duressed most of his goods game 1 and ended up with titan in play and he went all the way after dan was short on land. game 2:he got fucked on mana and I set up 2 slaver activations in a row, he had 3TFK in hand, he ripped a sol ring on one of his slaved turns so he played sol ring then forced it pitching thirst. Eventually titan came in and served up the W.
semi finals:max with goblins win 2-1 Yet another overconfidant type 2 player who thought they were the shit. He was buddies with Durney, and I had smashed him before at myriad games. Game 1 I couldn't get much good together, I hardcasted a triskelion to take out most of his team, I had 2 welders out but couldnt get a 2nd artifact in 5 turns to seal the game. Eventually he overwhelmed me with a siege of goblins from a recruiter, but if I had drawn an artifact it would have been game over because he used the gempalm incinerator to kill the trisk when it was a 1/1. On to game 2
While I sideboard he is going on about how terrible a player I must be, so I decided to stop cracking jokes and send him home so he and Durney can sing show tunes together on the way back to wherever they live. Game 2 he gets crushed even after using shattering spree to kill both a memory jar and triskelion, yawg will wins this game. game 3 he plays turn 1 aether vial off wasteland, I have a hand with 2 mox sol ring and a turn 1 gorilla shaman, so I eat his aether vial. He untaps plays strip mine and does nothing. I play a welder, and he kills 2 of my land. I get another welder out with the Ruby and pass after attacking. I draw memory jar but I am short 1 mana of playing it so I have to tap my 2 mox and sol ring, eat one of my moxes with 1 of the mana, weld out the sol ring to get another mox then weld sol ring back in to play the jar which I use that turn. It leads up to a desire for 9 at which point he scoops without running his mouth any more.
finals: Raymond Robillard, workshop slaver - mindslaver lose 1-2 Game 1 he casts Karn and smashes my face
game 2 I go broken and slave him killing his board, then I jar into a hand with rushing river and bounce his karn back to his hand and he scoops.
game 3 was super tight, until I cast rack and ruin on the wrong things. He had a welder out, I had a slaver activation next turn that would have been game over. I cast rack and ruin targeting his chalice for 0, and his triskelion but my mistake was killing the chalice. I had no moxes in my hand, the chalice was not hurting me at all, I could have gotten his crucible instead. I pass the turn having enough mana to cast slaver and activate it next turn.Â
On Ray's turn he plays mox mox tormods crypt demonic tutor for Jar which he casts.
My mistake in killing off the chalice was, that he would have certainly welded it out on his turn to drop the moxes and the tormod crypt. He did not have enough mana to tutor for jar and play it without the 2 moxes in his hand. Having his welder active that turn instead of having to use it to weld out the chalice was the key to him winning this game. He used jar once, and got a tolarian off it as well as tinker for black lotus. He used jar again, and finally found time walk. I was still in fine shape until he played time walk, but he got to untap and go broken on his time walk turn.
To make it short, if he didn't get to jar twice in that turn, I would have taken home the alpha sapphire, but I am happy with the emerald. Its the first piece of power I've won since waterbury in october. Top 8's left and right but it feels good to win power cards again. It shows you how making the smallest mistake like hitting the wrong target with a rack and ruin can cost you the match, and winning a tournament.
