Thanks to a good tax return and some saving, I managed to get myself a new 52" television.  Obviously the first thing I did was hook up my PS2 and NES.  I want to get some ideas on what "staple" games I should get.  I like all games, but I dont buy sports (Gretzky 2006 being the exceptionbecause I play the odd match with my roommate to get him to play Street Fighter or Twisted Metal Black.  Here is what I own (that I actually still play):

PS2
Turismo 3
Red Dead Revolver
Oni
TM Black
Max Payne
Gretzky 2006
SF Collection
Ultimate Spiderman
Ready to Rumble Round 2
Enter the Matrix

NES
All Marios
Guantlet 2
Legend of Zelda

As well, I am looking at getting a new Capcom fighting game.  I own the SF Anniversary Edition, but thats getting old.  Should I wait for the new Alpha Collection Coming out?  Regarding the Marvel ones, should I go with Marvel Superheroes for PS1, Marvel VS Capcom, or MVC 2?  I really liked the one for PS1, but I have not played the other 2.  MVC2 looks strange in that it uses 3 characters.  Any Info?

thanks

For ps2 you absolutely need:

Metal Gear Solid 3: snake eater. That's probably the best game ever.
Fight Night Round 3
Star Wars battle Front 2
Any Prince of Persia
Burnout 3

NES:

Metroid (such good music too!)
Mike Tyson's Punch out
Rc Pro Am
Tetris!
Contra
Ice Hockey
Castlevania 2 : Simon's Quest

for PS2, Resident Evil 4 is an absolute must, that game is so addicting.

For NES, you have to get Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. That game is classic beyond belief.

Also, X-Men Legends (1 and 2) were great games.

Which one is that?  There were a couple of them, IIRC.

they're all good, but (dont quote me on this) one of them is insanely hard, it may be the second one. The rest are easy and fun. Double Dragon and Double Dragon (and/vs?) Battle Toads are excellent games.

The one I specifically refer to is just called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and I believe it was the only one released on NES (Others have been released on PC, PS2, and X-Box). It was released in 1989, developed by Ultra and Konami.

I do believe you forgot Ghosts and Goblins for NES as well as Contra.  Both are simply must haves.

Regarding the NES,

Mega Man I-VI are must haves, although you may be hard pressed to find a cartridge for MMI.
I liked Startropics and Startropics II, but that's probably a personal choice. Same goes for Bubble Bobble.

Capcom makes an anniversary edition of megaman that has all the megaman games and one or two others that were only released in Japan for the PS2.. I have it it's sweet, but changing from playing 3d games like GTA san andreas and metal gear to a side scrolling game like megaman is a challenge for the senses!

It's backwards compatible, so I consider them all to be part of the same library.

The NES FFs were pretty good.

River City Ransom is, imo, the best game on NES and a must own.  It can be a little difficult to find, though.

The best capcom fighting game you can get (Since you own the annv. edition and hence 3S) would be CvS2. The best 2d fighting game you could get would be Guilty Gear Slash.

Shadow of the Colossus is also amazing fun for like 20 hours.

PS2:

Anything from the GTA series(and now Liberty City stories is coming out for PS2).

Fighting games:

Melty Blood > Guilty Gear

Evidence: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AA5BheDHvKg&search=melty%20blood%20guilty%20gear

Melty Blood is out in Japan for PS2...I think (if not, then it will be soon). You can always import Very Happy

Why is there no mention of Soul Calibur 2? The best fighting game! And Mortal Kombat if you're into insane combos.

I've found Grandia 2 to be the best game EVER, it's on PS2, an amazing RPG, the graphics aren't great but the game play and storyline rule.
On PS1 you've got the original Grandia as well, it's just as amazing. GET THEM!!!!

Marvel versus Capcom 2. I know you mentioned it, but this really is the one you should get.

I also recommend Street Fighter III: Third Strike. It comes with two games, SF3 (which is really incredible, even though I prefer MvC2 myself), and the "Anniversary Edition" of SF2, which is actually pretty cool.

Maybe I'm just awful at the old stuff, but the Anniversary Edition CPU is wicked hard.

Eh, it isn't really (though it was better than 3).  It's pretty crappily balanced; the best half dozen or so characters are so much better and easier to roach than the others; it's not like the Tekken or Guilty Gear series in which a pro can beat a roach with just about any character.

MvC2 and 3rd Strike are good fighting game choices too, but they don't have as large of a competitive following as Tekken and Guilty Gear anymore.

I have to agree with the SC2 Comment.  Its like a bunch of characters, then thiers Siegfried (currently known as nightmare) who is rather amazing.   Then way on the outskirts of that you have frieken Voldo playing his own game.  Seriously how cheap can one character get.... hes like the ichorid of fighting games, he just totally plays by his own rules.  If you want to win at SC just master voldo.  He essentially can't be blocked and can't be hit.... Fun!

Funny how you mention those 2 Harlequin; while I indeed agree that Voldo is really strong, he also requires a huge amount of skill to be used perfectly well as where Raphael is SO easy to master and REALLY good too. And I wtfpwn a friend who is really good with Voldo with Necro.

Balancing a game with so many characters and skills is impossible, I think SC2 is still one of the best jobs at doing so. Besides, the learning curve is very low while still maintaining a vast difference between a pro and a beginner, and again: the amount of available combo's is HUGE.

Wow... I mean no offense, but you two really are totally clueless about SC2.  Voldo?  RAPHAEL?  In SC2, Voldo was middle-tier at best, and Raphael was either the worst or second-worst.  Voldo "essentially can't be blocked and can't be hit?"  Go fire up SC2, pick Xianghua, and memorize the following (look up in the practice menu to learn what the letters mean if you don't know):

22_88B, 1B, FC3B
3B, 1B, WS3B
3A(K)(K~G)
AA
BB
CH AAB
Throws

Now set the computer to the highest difficulty, and proceed to demonstrate the power of X's roach set.

A similar process can be done for pretty much every character - some random scrub can go find out a character's best half dozen moves/combos, easily beat 75% of the players out there, and give the other 25% (who put the time and effort into actually maximizing a character's entire move set) a run for their money.  If this is what you meant by "low learning curve," well, it sucks.  The difference between pro and beginner is not big at all once the beginner learns a top-tier character's roach set.

The almost-undisputed best five characters were Ivy, Cervantes, Xianghua, Yoshimitsu, and Mitsurugi.  After those five, everyone else was roughly equal, and then Raphael and Yunsung on the bottom.

Sorry about driving this way off-topic, but I cannot stand such incorrect, uninformed statements going uncorrected.  Here's a tidbit that the original poster might find helpful: SC3 is far more well-balanced than SC2; as long as none of your play group intends to find out how to abuse the VC bug (or you ban its use), you should be able to have lots of fun with it.

Hang on just a sec.  #1 I never said Rapheal.  And #2, Learning a handful of easy to read combo's will never beat someone who has mastered the 'complex' art of holding Gaurd and pushing up or down.  At any rate, I would say top 5 in no order are: Nightmare, Ivy, Cervantes, Necrid, and Link or Spawn (honorable mention to Xianghua and Maxi).

Voldo is just cheap,  but not really unbeatable.  He has tons of stuff that stuns you, and disrupts your blocking.  Not to mention he can evade anything with the tap of a button.

Necrid and Nightmare are good because they have a bunch of moves that look almost the same (or start the same) that have different combinations of High and Low blocks.  That is the key to beating "good" players.  Randomly destroying people who don't know how to block hardly constitutes a good character in my book.

Rapheal is amazing if your in weapon mode... that Save the Queen thing hes got is un-frieken-believable.

--- We should hold a SC2 tourny on day 2 of waterbury. =P   The problem would be deciding on a platform.

A. We're talking about actual top tier competitive play for tier lists, this also means the console only characters are banned.

B. Nightmare simply has too much lag and not enough safe low hits to truly be top tier. If you fall outside of your comfort range (i.e. just out of reach of the majority of your opponents) you'll get eaten alive by quick block friendly moves.

C. , "Learning a handful of easy to read combo's will never beat someone who has mastered the 'complex' art of holding Gaurd and pushing up or down"

No really, it will. Have you ever actually watched a legit SC2 tournament? The reason people use this 'easy to read' combos is because they are EXTREMELY safe and if you even mix a few of them up, they're nearly impossible to counter effectively. You -can- do it, but there's hardly an easy way to punish the best patterns from X. The fact is you're gaining an advantage in frames every time you successfully land a move /pattern and move in even a little. At some point the 'guard all the time' plan will fall to a unexpected mix-up or simply allowing X to get close enough to start throwing.
