----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At the end of round 5 we will be taking sign ups for a FREE tournament for a MANA DRAIN. The tournament will require you to use the same deck used in the main event(to make life infinitely freakin' easier) and to ensure speedy signups-send off.
The first three rounds of the event will run with the same 50 minute time frame that rounds 6, 7, and 8 of the tournament do. ((EDIT))

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wish to try out a new game that I tried at Hadley a few weeks ago to give prizes away each round.  In this way, players can have a little excitement beside me just pulling random names.  The game works like this:
1.) Prior to the start of the event everyone writes down the name of a card on their reg sheet that they know pretty much everything about.
2.) In between each round I ask everyone to stand up.
3.) I say things like "If your card is an artifact, sit down." or "If your card has been printed in the base set, sit down."
4.) Last man standing wins.
5.) To really draw everyone into the game, I'm going to make the prizes something really exciting.  I'm not sure what yet, but whatever it is will be something pretty special. TBD

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BYES ((EDIT))

The top finishers(top is a relative word based on the size of the event) of ANY Type 1 Tournament in the world will be rewarded with the ability to purchase a round one bye at the upcoming Waterbury TMD Open seperate from any prize the TO is giving, The following guidelines are to be considered:
1.) The tournament must have at least 25 people.
2.) If the tournament has between 25 and 49 people, the winner may purchase a bye for $10.
3.) If the tournament has between 50 and 74 people, the winner AND/OR the 2nd place finisher may purchase a bye for $10 each.
4.) If the tournament has 75+ people, the top 4 players may purchase a bye for $10(this will mainly be SCG events)

ALSO, a TO can still offer byes as prizes in one of two ways.  They can purchase either a round one bye without entry for $10 or a round one bye with entry fee for $30.  These can only be use as prizes for:
1.) Part of a first or second place prize if the tournament has between 15 and 39 people.
2.) Part of any top 4 place prize if the tournament has between 40 and 64 people.
3.) Part of any top 8 place prize if the tournament has 65+ people.

Any TO's wishing to purchase a bye must contact me prior to the day of the event for which the bye is being offered, though payment doesn't have to be received until after the tournament takes place, since if the tournament does not meet the minimmum number of players and the bye cannot be awarded, the TO will not be charged.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PROXIES

As far as proxies go, each player will be entitled to 10 proixes included in the basic admission cost.  In addition, players may pay $1 per proxy for the ability to play additional ones with the maximum number of total proxies being 15.  Prior to the start of the tournament, when you bring up your decklist, a waterbury associate(not someone playing in the event) will check that your decklist properly indicates all your proxies.  At this time, you will present your deck to show the indicated number of proxies and pay at that time for additional ones past 10.  There are some who would be tempted to cheat this system.  Let it be said that each round there will be at least one random deck check(now possible with increased help).  Any player who is found to have more proxies than indicated on his decklist and/or paid for will receive a disqualification from the event without prize.  This may sound severe, but keep in mind that this is simply to prevent deception and people from abusing a privilege intended to benefit Waterbury and newer players(who may need slightly more proxies).  As long as you are on the up-and-up, you have nothing to worry about.

A proxy should not be distunguishable from a regular card in a sleeve except for the face.  This means no back markings, no cards backwards in sleeves, no abnormal thickness of papers in sleeves, no papers falling out of sleeves, etc.

Proxies must have all pertinent info written on them: Card Name, Casting Cost, Text, Power/Toughness, Etc

Best bet is to get some revised plains(they are plenty light), sharpie the front with all the info, and draw a quick sketch of the picture.  This will minimize your chance of having an inappropriate proxy.

If there is still doubt, ask at Waterbury when registering your deck.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Team rivalry, a.k.a. Braggin Rights Supreme JULY 2006

CURRENT TWO TIME REIGNING CHAMPS: TEAM NUTS AND STAFF OFF TWICE...If you haven't already seen the trophy they got in addition to about $90 in cards and other then you will see it at Waterbury.  The trophy is enormous, probabbly bigger than at least 1 or 2 waterbury participants!

Here is how its gonna go down.  Teams of three will agree prior to the event to play as a team and will register(seperate from a deck registration...it will be done on a different sheet of paper).  Each teams cost is $9...$3 per person.  Then, at the end of the tournament, the teams with the highest combined number of match points(top 16 matches-finals count as 3 points per match, just as in the swiss) will win.

If enough teams enter, there may be a second place prizes or more, but the number of teams entering, and thus the collected entry fees, will determine the prizes.  In the event of a tie for match points, the average opponent match win percentage of the three players on each team will be computed and compared.

After round 3 team designations will be inserted into players names, so teams may view each other team's players and match points on the pairings/standings.

Hoooray.  This is clearly the most important tournament in the united states, and will always be.  Perhaps my team can make a 3-peat in the team competition, time to find a 3rd person.  Then I can be the michael jordan of type 1 bitches.

Just to clarify my post from the other thread, if I show up, it will be to play, not to judge. As awesome as judging is, I haven't played in a Waterbury for a while now, and it would be such good times.

I have a flight back to England the day before and so won't be in attendance or judging either.  Or running side events.  On the plus side, I do get to go to Britain's biggest beer festival the week after...

I'll do what I can to ensure as many locals as possible are set up for rides and decks beforehand.  And I'll be running a practice tournament the weekend before.

I'm hoping to become part of the Waterbury tradition this time around.  If there's any individual or group traveling there from the west (Illinois or further), let me know.  I'd like someone to ride with, or even drive myself.  I definitaly wouldn't make this trip alone.

I received this PM about an issue which I though was not even really up for debate
Quote
Ray,

Seriously think about raising prices for Waterburies.  I don't know if you're getting your power at half off or something, but you can easily raise the entry fee by 5 or 10 dollars to make a better profit for yourself (and even a better prize structure), and there won't be any complaining.

How much profit are you making off waterburies?  I would seriously consider raising prices by at least five dollars the next time around.  If the prize structure increases even a small amount, I can almost guarantee that you'll actually increase in people attending.

Just one tournament organizer to another.

Colby

Did I miss something?  Are people not happy with the prcie/prize structure?

It is my opinion that a smaller entry fee is appropriate to keep the tournament affordable for all.  Those who travel from far are typically your more dedicated serious player and as such wouldn't mind shelling out a few extra bucks for an increased prize structure.  Local players are a mixed bag: serious and casual.

I, personally, don't feel a change is needed, but I am always open to input.

Please chime in here and let me know what you think.  My hope is that there is an overwhelming agreement one way or another.

If you charged $30, and kept the same prize structure, it would do nothing to change whether I'd attend or not. I go because it's such a good time. That's just me, though.

@ rich: Oh...a change in price would MOST CERTAINLY change the prize structure for the better.  I know this is not what you were implying, but let me make it clear: This discussion is not about me getting more profit.  It is about people feelings on similar prize payout to entry fee ratio, but with larger values of each.

Ray I just thought that I would stand up and say something here....... Ever since I started running tournaments I have tried to achieve what you have and the following that you have. I dont know If I have ever met a single man to try and Do what you do. I try to set up the Big ones just like you, the difference is that I have a store to help back me. I know that you give away cards that you have won over the time between TMD opens, SO as far as Waterbury goes I think that almost everyone that goes would pay whatever you wanted us to pay. We all love and look forward to Waterbury. So no matter what you were to do Im sure that everyone would be behind you 100% of the way.

Even if it were $50 I'd find a way to justify it in my head.

That said, this tournament is so hot that even the entry fee is sweet.  I hope nothing changes, but like Rich I'll still go if it does.

A lower entry fee is like giving everyone there $5 in prizes, which is awesome.

Also, I really really like how there is an actual difference between, say 5th place and 8th place. SCG does a good job of rewarding first place, but the rest of the power is too close in value to make for really interesting games.

I'm afraid I'll have to complain here.  If the price for each event is upped to 30-40 dollars, some people will likely consider sparing themselves the trip.  I could play in two tournaments for that price and have a better chance at a prize than playing in just one.  Perhaps I'm not as dedicated as the rest of you, but I frown upon this decision.  Paying nearly 200 in traveling fees and an equal amount for a motel leaves very little extra chaff to be throwing around.  Consider that many people are making a longer than normal trip for this weekend.  I fear that their budgets will not leave as much tangibility as yours.

Waterbury is a premier level Vintage event . I think $25 is perfectly reasonable for that prize structure and helps insure the viability of future Waterburies. At $30 there would be a marked decrease in attendance, but $25 over $20 is not that big a difference for a major event like Waterbury. If the entry were $25 for the stated prize structure [guaranteed] then Ray would have the option to increase the prize structure with higher attendance without having to worry so much about covering the costs of running the event in the case of low attendance. When TOs lose money on events, the probability of future events decreases. Scaling prize structures helps improve the consistency of the Vintage tournament scene, which is something I feel we should all endeavor to support.

Well, he did kinda win the event we're discussing now, but I guess that must have been a fluke.

In any case, a TMD Tax is a pretty silly idea.

Yeah we all know that Trav's a luck sack I mean he has only won Waterbury once,Came in Second a SCG in VA,has multiple Top 2's and I know that I can't even count the number of Top 8's and Top 16's that he has made.  Oh!! Lets not forget that he has been on 2 (BOTH) of the TMD Open Team Champs!!!! Soon to be 3 time champs!
