----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At the end of round 5 we will be taking sign ups for a FREE tournament for a MANA DRAIN. The tournament will require you to use the same deck used in the main event(to make life infinitely freakin' easier) and to ensure speedy signups-send off.
The first three rounds of the event will run with the same 50 minute time frame that rounds 6, 7, and 8 of the tournament do. ((EDIT))

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wish to try out a new game that I tried at Hadley a few weeks ago to give prizes away each round.  In this way, players can have a little excitement beside me just pulling random names.  The game works like this:
1.) Prior to the start of the event everyone writes down the name of a card on their reg sheet that they know pretty much everything about.
2.) In between each round I ask everyone to stand up.
3.) I say things like "If your card is an artifact, sit down." or "If your card has been printed in the base set, sit down."
4.) Last man standing wins.
5.) To really draw everyone into the game, I'm going to make the prizes something really exciting.  I'm not sure what yet, but whatever it is will be something pretty special. TBD

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BYES ((EDIT))

The top finishers(top is a relative word based on the size of the event) of ANY Type 1 Tournament in the world will be rewarded with the ability to purchase a round one bye at the upcoming Waterbury TMD Open seperate from any prize the TO is giving, The following guidelines are to be considered:
1.) The tournament must have at least 25 people.
2.) If the tournament has between 25 and 49 people, the winner may purchase a bye for $10.
3.) If the tournament has between 50 and 74 people, the winner AND/OR the 2nd place finisher may purchase a bye for $10 each.
4.) If the tournament has 75+ people, the top 4 players may purchase a bye for $10(this will mainly be SCG events)

ALSO, a TO can still offer byes as prizes in one of two ways.  They can purchase either a round one bye without entry for $10 or a round one bye with entry fee for $30.  These can only be use as prizes for:
1.) Part of a first or second place prize if the tournament has between 15 and 39 people.
2.) Part of any top 4 place prize if the tournament has between 40 and 64 people.
3.) Part of any top 8 place prize if the tournament has 65+ people.

Any TO's wishing to purchase a bye must contact me prior to the day of the event for which the bye is being offered, though payment doesn't have to be received until after the tournament takes place, since if the tournament does not meet the minimmum number of players and the bye cannot be awarded, the TO will not be charged.

** With byes passing down from players already qualified for one, you may want to check this list carefully, and inform any friends that may not know they are qualified for a round 1 bye.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PROXIES

As far as proxies go, each player will be entitled to 10 proixes included in the basic admission cost.  In addition, players may pay $1 per proxy for the ability to play additional ones with the maximum number of total proxies being 15.  Prior to the start of the tournament, when you bring up your decklist, a waterbury associate(not someone playing in the event) will check that your decklist properly indicates all your proxies.  At this time, you will present your deck to show the indicated number of proxies and pay at that time for additional ones past 10.  There are some who would be tempted to cheat this system.  Let it be said that each round there will be at least one random deck check(now possible with increased help).  Any player who is found to have more proxies than indicated on his decklist and/or paid for will receive a disqualification from the event without prize.  This may sound severe, but keep in mind that this is simply to prevent deception and people from abusing a privilege intended to benefit Waterbury and newer players(who may need slightly more proxies).  As long as you are on the up-and-up, you have nothing to worry about.

A proxy should not be distunguishable from a regular card in a sleeve except for the face.  This means no back markings, no cards backwards in sleeves, no abnormal thickness of papers in sleeves, no papers falling out of sleeves, etc.

Proxies must have all pertinent info written on them: Card Name, Casting Cost, Text, Power/Toughness, Etc

Best bet is to get some revised plains(they are plenty light), sharpie the front with all the info, and draw a quick sketch of the picture.  This will minimize your chance of having an inappropriate proxy.

If there is still doubt, ask at Waterbury when registering your deck.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Team rivalry, a.k.a. Braggin Rights Supreme JULY 2006

CURRENT TWO TIME REIGNING CHAMPS: TEAM NUTS AND STAFF OFF TWICE...If you haven't already seen the trophy they got in addition to about $90 in cards and other then you will see it at Waterbury.  The trophy is enormous, probabbly bigger than at least 1 or 2 waterbury participants!

Here is how its gonna go down.  Teams of three will agree prior to the event to play as a team and will register(seperate from a deck registration...it will be done on a different sheet of paper).  Each teams cost is $9...$3 per person.  Then, at the end of the tournament, the teams with the highest combined number of match points(top 16 matches-finals count as 3 points per match, just as in the swiss) will win.

If enough teams enter, there may be a second place prizes or more, but the number of teams entering, and thus the collected entry fees, will determine the prizes.  In the event of a tie for match points, the average opponent match win percentage of the three players on each team will be computed and compared.

After round 3 team designations will be inserted into players names, so teams may view each other team's players and match points on the pairings/standings.

According to http://www.geobytes.com/CityDistanceTool.htm?loadpage Davis is actually further from Waterbury than Seattle is.

Ray: that site should be very helpful for determining future furthest travellers.

So basically what youre saying is the car that comes from Jersey should get a prize....I don't think anyone desrves a prize for living in Jersey.

As an aside, hooray for the date finally being set, I'm pumped.

I received this PM about an issue which I though was not even really up for debate
Quote
Ray,

Seriously think about raising prices for Waterburies.  I don't know if you're getting your power at half off or something, but you can easily raise the entry fee by 5 or 10 dollars to make a better profit for yourself (and even a better prize structure), and there won't be any complaining.

How much profit are you making off waterburies?  I would seriously consider raising prices by at least five dollars the next time around.  If the prize structure increases even a small amount, I can almost guarantee that you'll actually increase in people attending.

Just one tournament organizer to another.

Colby

Did I miss something?  Are people not happy with the prcie/prize structure?

It is my opinion that a smaller entry fee is appropriate to keep the tournament affordable for all.  Those who travel from far are typically your more dedicated serious player and as such wouldn't mind shelling out a few extra bucks for an increased prize structure.  Local players are a mixed bag: serious and casual.

I, personally, don't feel a change is needed, but I am always open to input.

Please chime in here and let me know what you think.  My hope is that there is an overwhelming agreement one way or another.

I think the prize structure is awesome.

I would pay more if you asked, but I'm poor so I like the price.

That prize structure is very good as is, and the only reason I would think you should increase it is because you are losing money on the event.  With those kind of prizes, it seems worth the trip for most people (not california or something, but reasonable distances).  You should make the entry as low as possible while still breaking even, in my opinion (a little profit is also OK, considering the work you must put in).  Do people really go to Waterbury because they like the prize structure?

Id be interested to see the spread on how much money is brought in by "additional proxy" purchases.  I always figured it was a cleaver ploy by store owners to either promote sales or make some marginal return on players un-willing to buy cards.  If you figgure your going to pay $1 to proxy a card thats worth say $6, most players will just buy the stupid card and -boom- thats $5 in the store's pocket.  If you wanted to be Econo-savy on this you could make it soemthing like $2 per additional proxy and have the stores give you a little kick-back for boosting thier sales OR do something like:

$15 for 0 Proxies
$20 for 10 Proxy limit
$25 for 15 Proxy limit
$30 for unilimited proxies

Now you've also got ppl who are at 11 proxies buying a card to save $5, and you have the added attraction of players who just want to net-deck it for $30.

Gotta love that capitolism!
----------------------------------------------

All that aside.  If Ray is comfortable with the structure / prize / pay-out after all is said and done, then I would think that $20 + $1 per proxy is familiar to most players and is 100% awsome.  I guarentee you that no one is calling you "greedy" with that sort of support... add in the FREE "consolation-tourny" that has a $100 prize.  I really liked that.  Kudo's on that.  Thats just about the best $20 bucks I could spend, I'm ensure to play at least 6 competative rounds (where I am still in contention for prize) even if I loose 4 of them!!

Now, if only I could afford flights, accomodation, etc.  I'd have the Traveller prixe sewn up, just about.  Razz

It looks like it would be major fun if I could get the cards together.

RIP Mogg Fanatic...at least you are still better than Fire Bowman!!!

I was once asked on MWS, what the highest I ever finished at a TMD Open was.  I replied, "I've never played in a Waterbury.  I was then called "A TOTAL NOOB!"

Updated Bye List

Also...made the Free Mana Drain Event start after round 5 instead of round 6(because I, nor others, want to be at the Marriott until 5 am, before coming back for Day 2)

Also...please note, Coldsnap is only legal in the Day 2 event.

I know you didn't mention needing them in your post, but if you end up being short on judges, I'd be more than happy to be one of the player/judges. Let me know if you need further help.

I'm actually plenty good on Player Judges...I have had many people volunteer for this position.

What is tough is getting people who just want to help all day without playing.  The flipside to giving up the ability to play is better compensation including free food and drink, an official TMD playmat, lodging if needed(at my place) and $$$.

I didn't know if you check your PM's first or here first, so I figured I'd tell you in both. I locked up another Full time staffer. He can act as either a judge or a concessions vendor. I's up to you. There's more description in the PM I sent you.

I actually had to explain to someone why Mana Drain was better than Counterspell. That was depressing...

Then they asked why Black Lotus was better than Gilded Lotus. I walked away.
