If I intend to be playing against decks that are going to be waste landing my lands and null rodding my moxes.  I play COW in my decks.  Since I already have COW in those types of Metagames I can't justify not playing strip mine over LoA.  However, if I intend to be playing in a meta where I don't need COW, I play LoA, because obviously it is a more control oriented meta/  or, so I'm assuming.

That seems fairly sound.

I would like to add, that you can basically consider LOA a win condition.  Think about it, asside from combo, LOA is a "must answer" for all other decks.  When your LoA hits the board, you know they thier next black tutor will be for waste/strip, because if left un-contested, LOA will provide enough fuel to ignite a win.  The reason LoA is good is because it gives you inevitablity in the match-ups where you can't win with a single slaver activation.  against combo, it generally only takes one.  If you can power down that drain/Academy/mega-mox {10} you need to drop the slavery bomb against combo then you basically win, because you either decimate thier hand, or straight up tutor for necro and gg.  In that matchup both stripmine and LoA are basically not worth a land drop.  So that arguement is not really that valid, because if they go turn 1 Gemstone Brainstorm (think think think) --- pass.  Playing Stripmine is a major gamble.  You have to hit that perfect sweet spot of: they NEED that gemstone to win in the next 2 turns.   They could either A) have no shuffle effect for the next 2 turns and no way to win in which case you will have drain up quicker if you drop a colored mana instead of a stripmine.  or B)  hit the gas and have the win in hand that doesn't even need that gemstone (but they couldn't win last turn because they didn't have a {B} up - but they have a new landdrop ready).  So if you don't end up in that sweetspot then stripmine is not really that good.

On the other side, there is the non-combo matchups that cannot nessisarily be won by a single slaver activation.  In those matchups LoA is the "High Trump."  Spesifically this is Fish (includeing SS), Slaver Mirror, Gifts, Oath, Stax.  In these matchups how good is stripmine?  perhaps in oath it keeps them off double angel (leaving you with a 3 turn clock instead of a 2 turn clock), and there is a slight off-chance that you can lock out stax under its own turn 1 3sphere.  But outside of that that, stripmine is inferior to drawing cards in any of these matches.  Now we get into the duress arguement.  All of these decks may be running duress. and ofcourse that hurts LoA and does not hurt Stripmine.  But does that really matter? they didn't really answer LoA, they just delayed it for one turn.  A single Thrist or Repeal can make up that loss.  They still are faced with a "Stop LoA or loose" condition.  The LoA puts pressure for them to stop you now, or else... Stripmine just hinders thier development slightly.

In all actuality, the best thing you can do with stripmine is hit thier LoA!  so that really says something about how good LoA is.

Actually Harlequin, the best thing you can do with Strip Mine is destroy all of your opponents lands.  Smile

Hi, I've been playing control slaver for a decent amount of time now and have been considering cutting Library of Alexandria for the simple fact that it often clogs up getting Mana Drain online and many times games are over before it even gets useful.  It is however very useful for the miror match and versus gifts and other control decks.  What is everyone's opinion on this?  I've been considering something like strip mine in its place.

Strip Mine is not the correct answer for your reasonings to cut Library of Alexandria.  Strip Mine also prevents turn 2 Mana Drain mana.  The issue here is whether or not the slot for MVP Land (next to Tolarian Academy) belongs to Library of Alexandria or Strip Mine.  Both have very powerful effects, it is just up to the player to decide which one he considers The Best Possible Move.

This player thinks Library of Alexandria.  Hands down.

I will break into your house while you aren't home and disguise myself as a chair. Then I will leave before you get home, but there will be a place at your table where I was a chair and you will wonder why there isn't a chair there. Then later I will leave the chair disguise on your doorstep and you will realize what has happened and you will be afraid all the time. Helter Skelter mother fuckers!

Hey All,

I am also a Canadian Vintage Player, and I have found that I agree with DicemanX in that no one is going to cut the LoA up here.  The LoA seems more Explosive, the Strip seems more consistent.  I would have to say that this is 100% a preference pick for the player playing the deck, and that either is completely acceptable.  We all know that Library can RUIN the mirror and gifts matchups, but it very rarely is something that can be abused by a will and never by a crucible (if you choose to run one).

With all that said, despite it sounding like I favour the strip, I will inexplicably continue running the Library.

idk about the guys that want to cut library but with it in opening hand i have never lost a game unless from a play error on my hand.and the only way i ever got off library was if i had to double force on the same turn you will never get off library

Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong! Failed to notice we have a set of rules over here, did ya? Every one of your posts breaks some (and in some cases all) of rules 1.2 (all lower case post), 1.3 (run-on sentences), 1.4 (no punctuation breaks), 1.5 (no paragraph breaks), 1.8 (incorrect spelling), 1.9 (excessive abbreviations), 4 (lack of content), and 6 (using red bold text). Way to earn your nickname. Consider yourself warned, and recommended for banning. Welcome to TMD!

Personally I always use Strip Mine, LoA is a very powerful card and all, but it is quite often a "dead" card. Dropping it turn one will put you behind on the blue mana, whereas at least Strip Mine gives you an extra turn to get your blue mana sorted. I personally would keep LoA as a sideboard card for the mirror match-up, but other than that Strip Mine is always going to be my choice of the two. For 1 thing, as I said it will help you if you can't get the early blue mana for drain (or indeed any other mana you may find yourself needing), and secondly later in the game it can take out any of their problematic lands (ie Academy, LoA etc). That's just my view, but I guess you should play which ever feels more comfortable.
