This really needs a new name, but I can't think of anything decent. This was inspired by the "free" cards of the Urza block.

Whenever a player plays a spell, they may untap a land.

I chose the mana cost because at any more than 3 it may be too much, and something like 2U would be too easy to cast, at one point this was UUU. It definitely needs flavour text, but I'm hopeless at it.

I have another card that I'm working on in a similar vein to this, that I shall post shortly.

I would Change it to "Basic Land" so It cant be abused with cards like gaeas cradle, Tolarian academy, workshop etc.

Other than that I like the card. It might give blue a big advantage though; Brainstorm for free, etc.

Hmm, I was worried about the power issue with Tolarian Academy etc, but having it only target basics may make it a "bad" rare (I say "bad" rare because this obviously wouldn't be common or uncommon). I'll leave it as as is for now, to be honest I don't think it could be abused by any land other Academy, because it's the only particularly abusable one that produces blue mana. Workshop wouldn't see play with it because you'd have a hard job casting it, especially beings Workshop mana can only be used on artifacts.

This really needs a new name, but I can't think of anything decent. This was inspired by the "free" cards of the Urza block.

The "fee mechanic" was broken, and so is this, in my opinion. Blue has so many cantrips and really good draw effects that a combo deck with this nearly builds itself. Even in T2 this is really dangerous and would limit the cards they could possibly print to not make it broken. Early Harvest is a one-shot, in a worse colour and untaps only basics, and is still heavily played. This is better, and could trump Reset in Solidarity decks, so I think you should completely re-do this. First, it should be green, because untapping lands is a green effect nowadays (I think), and because green can abuse it less. In addition, make it only basics, so playing blue-green combo doesn't get the easiest idea on earth. Might still be too good in enchantress with Wild Growth, Utpia Sprawl and Fertile Ground, but would maybe ok.

edit: also make it one-sided; this card needs a deck built around it, and doesn't benefit a non-prepared opponent much (like Dream Halls did), so it feels silly to have it affect both player. I don't want to imagine combo mirrors with this.

Ooh, I like the name.

Of course you realize, this WILL be used in combo and basically nowhere else, right? But I think it's still fine and fair, it's closer to Early Harvest than Dark Ritual.

what about, instead of writing "Whenever you play a spell, you may untap a basic land"

"Whenever you play a spell, you may untap a non legendary land

so that all lands can be used, except for the combo lands.

@ Matt: Yeah I do realise that, but actually as it is, it would see a fair bit of play in casual green decks that play big creatures.

@ Bad Wolf: I like that suggestion, but in the current standard there are a lot of Legendary Lands. I'll change it to non legendary for now though.

No. Go with basic lands or this is going to be too good even with like City of Traitors. Basic lands was elegant and clean.

it is still quite good and playable, but certainly not broken. Actually a very nice card to have in a set and perfectly in-colour. I wouldn't change anything anymore.
