I'm not going to go into more details, since I don't have more details.  I had a weird idea this morning about how much fun it would be to have a fun event(Think Waterbury Day 2) starting at about 8:00 pm and being like a lock in...going straight through the night until 8:00 am the next morning.

As a side note, this could be awesomely supplemented by a huge group of type 1 players going out for a community dinner the night before and a huge breakfast the next morning.

What do you all think?

I'll admit that I'm 'hessitant' about this.

Here is an interesting Idea.  Have it be some flat entry to get in the door.  like $40-50 or something.  Then make as many events as possible "Free with Entry."  Have the main focus a mox tourement, but then have TONS of side tournements and events with good prizes that are 'Free' to keep everyone busy and essentially in conentention for something all night.  Maybe even include with that entry fee a few coupons redemable for 'free' pizza slices and sodas (like you did with the cake).  I think paying a large amount upfront would be better than shelling out for $10 and $5 side events all night.  along with $2 per food item.   Basically try to work it out so that there are enough side events with prizes where everyone walks away at 8AM with some sort of prize.

to bring that further, you could have each person have a running point total.  Assign points to each standing in each event.  Like in the main tournement maybe 100 pts for 1st, 75 for 2nd, 25 for 3rd-8th... etc.  And have side events with pt values too.  Then at the end of the event, have an overall Champion of the Night, and give out separate prizes based on nightly points.  This is something that could be way way way more work than is worth it, but it might be fun.

Disclaimer: These are just crazy Tuesday morning Ideas, and they may infact be stupid Razz

Well, I can offer my services as a cook for the event. If you rent a place with a functional kitchen, I can provide meals for the price of the food only. (Might even be better than cold pizza, I reckon Smile Probably cheaper, too! )

This sounds savage. I would definitely fly out to attend this.

Have Thai food for dinner with 150 of our closest Type 1 friends, then go battle for 9 hours to win the prizes. Then go out for brunch the next day.

Ray, would it be possible to somehow involve beer in the tournament?  You have no idea how much I would love being able to drink a beer in between matches.

LIGHTNING EDIT:  Hey, here's an idea:

We could have a cover charge of like 40 or 50 bucks for all those crazy games, like Harlequin said, then we could either BYOB or have like, Ray being a beer vendor in some room somewhere, where he could check our ID if we wanted to purchase one, and we'd have to stay inside that room or something.  I could bring up a TV and Halo for everyone.  Ray, C'mon man.

DOUBLE LIGHTNING EDIT:  We could also have like VIP passes around our neck or something if we're allowed in the land of Magic.  It could have our name on it and everything.

It would be really difficult. Underage drinking isn't no big deal, and if someone was caught, Ray would be in HUGE trouble. I mean like Huge trouble. Although having a beer vendor would alliviate some of the issues, there is still the issue of having a proper liscence to sell beer. If he has one, then I guess it's cool.

I would reccomend against BYOB in any case.

Here's the way I understand it:

For a regular tournament, it's cool to leave the tournament area and go to, say, a bar and get liquored up (if you're of age, of course) or to your room, or whatever. In fact, not only is it fun, but you can even repeat the legendary Round 8 - Shot for 4 dmg game we played up in someone's room.

HOWEVER, for a lock-in, this would require open containers in extremely close proximity with underage consumers. This is a no-no, and something I do NOT advocate. Further, it would be awkard at the least, and jailtime at the worst, if anyone not legally allowed to imbibe did so.

Therefore, I would guess the answer is no. I'm all for drinking + magic = fun, but in this instance, I don't think it's a good idea.

@orgcandman: This isn't your average tourney this is a lock in. I understand your concern with under age drinking but this BYOB would be only avalible to of age adults. The magic community isn't talking about Animal House like anticts(though that was a great movie) were talking about having a few brews while talking about magic theory and playing the game.

I think the idea of a community get together/party would be...well, really cool but wierd at the same time. I know that regular Waterbury tournaments get's a little crowded and hot, being locked in like that with all that man sweat...*eck
Idea is good, I'd have to really consider pending on the details of the event. *Beer idea is great though!

If you can't get a large enough crowd that it's 21+ there's no way to justify alchohol.  There's not going to be anyone who's willing to put thier neck on the line and accept the consequences if a minor drinks.

Quote
I understand your concern with under age drinking but this BYOB would be only avalible to of age adults.

Enforcing this would be a full time job for atleast one person depending on how large the turn out is.  The only thing I can see, which would not be fun or cheap, is hiring a police officer to be on hand the entire time.  As an adult, you can't be putting yourself in a situation where minors will easily be able to get their hands on alchohol.  The risk of repercussions from parents, and potentially legal issues are in no where near the reward of having a few drinks.

Quote

You may be talking about having a few brews.  You will certainly not be controlling anyone elses drinking.  Whenever alchohol is being consumed, there's always a chance that someone is going to go farther than is wise.  I've seen tons of people get loaded at tournaments, where the people have to go out to their cars or a local package store/bar to get booze.  If there is drinking, I assure you that there will be people who will be taking it farther than you would.  That again creates needlessly risky situations with drunken adults and minors.

ME!!!

Hey Ray, it's pretty obvious that you're not going to allow this - however, could all the 21 and overs go to a bar to get a few drinks after (or before!) the tournament?

It'd be cool to organize something like that, wouldn't it Ray?  Let's get the entire Vintage 21+ crowd together and go drink beer!  HEER HAW YEAH!

Im not sure if Ray has this infromation, but what percentage of say the normal Waterbury tournament's attendants ore 21 and over?

Im sure if we really put the word out we could get a reasonable attendance for a 21 and over event. I even know of a place that may be just the right size and they have a bar there and hot waitresses too!!!! It's only a stone throws away from Waterbury and easy to get to from the highway... Lodging may be a little tricky... If you are interested Ray let me know I can get you the number and/or talk to the owner(I know him fairly well)...

I wouldnt see a 21+ event getting the attendance of a Waterbury event, maybe not even the prize support, but it would be a hell of a lot of fun! I also think that BYOB makes it even easier for people to go overboard. If it can be held at a place that serves alcohol, restraint will be alot easier.

Something makes me think that if you can do this at weddings, doing it at a private lock-in would be fine as long as nobody is actually selling hooch.

Check your state liquor laws. Here in OH, if you put up signs at a party that say "Must be 21 to drink" and don't put out keg cups, you can't be liable for underage drinking. Probably the best way to deal with this though is BYOB. Again, speaking from Ohio laws, if minors are within an arm's reach of an open container, they can be nailed, but not otherwise. If you have a special lounge at one side of the event where 21+ people can go and minors can't, then it seems fine. That said, I am not a lawyer and I'm unfamiliar with right coast laws.
