I'd like to congratulate keys as the winner of 4CB Tournament #3!
Smallpox showed its power already this tournament, taking the top two slots - in fact, it's probably going to be banned - but some excellent interactions in the winning deck nonetheless! Well done!

Well, it's a shame that there weren't enough entrants to keep it to one deck each, but there were still plenty of interesting decks around! As mentioned above I don't think Smallpox is going to stay legal - it's just got too much power behind it for a two-mana card, even with two coloured mana; given two entirely different decks took the top two slots by a distance with completely different Smallpox tricks, I think that's testament to its power. I like the Stuffy Doll combo that two people came up with, which is a new benchmark for decks, as it's the fastest legal deck out there. One thing that interested me was the large number of Chalice decks running around, which is why the deck based on Suspend cards didn't run so well (and, incidentally, why my second creation was able to avoid the wooden spoon for the fortnight - Chalice for 2 on the play cut out a surprising number of decks' game plans!).

Apologies for not putting results up sooner, I had a few personal things that had to be dealt with last night and hence I didn't log on until now.

For next week: Same Again!

Rules:

Basic Rules

- Your deck is composed of 4 cards, all of which start in your hand.
- Your deck has no sideboard.
- You don't lose as a result of not being able to draw a card.
- You can see your opponent's hand, so you can always make the best possible play.
- Your random effects always go in your opponent's favor.
- All other rules of Magic remain unchanged, unless otherwise stated.

Tournament Rules

- All matches are played out by the moderator (participants only submit the decks).
- Tournaments are run in round-robin fashion.
- Each matchup consists of 2 games, with each deck going first once.
- Participants earn 3 points if their deck wins a game, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss; thus, over the course of a match, you can earn 6, 4, 3, 2, 1, or 0 points.

Deck-Building Rules

- You may not submit a deck that can win before the end of your opponent's first turn.
- You may not submit a deck that can force an opponent to discard more than 1 card in one turn.
- You may not submit a deck that can generate infinite (or an arbitrarily large amount of) mana on the first turn.
- Your deck may not include Unglued or Unhinged cards, ante cards, Garfield event cards (such as Splendid Genesis or Proposal), or 1996 World Champion.
- You may not include a card that appears on the 4CB Banned List.

Banned List:
Strip Mine
Ghost Quarter
Wasteland
The Rack
Trinisphere

Form of the Dragon
Abandon Hope
Addle
Brain Pry
Blackmail
Cabal Therapy
Duress
Mesmeric Fiend
Meddling Mage
Energy Field
Foil
Force of Will
Show and Tell
Smallpox <---------- NEW ADDITION

Preferred Submission Format: (Use [] instead of <>)

Subject: 4CB #??
YourName
DeckName
Card1
Card2
Card3
Card4

The date for closing entries will be the 26th October - two weeks from today. I'd normally just shorten this tournament to ten days, but on Sunday 22nd I'm getting baptised at my church, and to be honest I doubt I'll go on TMD that day; as such I may as well make it two weeks from now.

Thanks,
Adam

Any deck that can force the discard of more than one card per turn.

Is there going to be a special exception for Restore Balance? It violates the letter, but not the spirit of this rule.

Me (#10)
vs. #3 - Peat Bog, Chalice, Tongs, Smallpox
Current: 0-6
Suggested: 1-4

On the play:

Me1: Factory
Him1: Peat Bog
Me2: Basilica, returning Factory
Him2: Smallpox. If he plays Tongs, next turn I play Vindicate on his Bog and win through Shortfang. He has no lands, and I can't play anything off Factory alone. Draw.

vs. #15 - Fountain of Cho, Karakas, Leyline, Mangara
Current: 2-2
Suggested: 6-0

Him1: Fountain.
Me1: Factory.
Him2: 1 counter. Karakas.
Me2: Basilica.
Him3: 2 counters.
Me3: Factory. Vindicate on Karakas.
Him4: 3 counters.
Me4: Nezumi Shortfang.
Him5: Play Mangara.

By this time, no matter what permanent he destroys, I still win. This is even better when I'm on the play.

They all look OK - I forgot the Smallpox stops him from winning too. Will change them tomorrow.

As for Restore Balance, now that I think about it I think it should go: Balance isn't on the Banned List because it can force multiple discard, so I think that all cards that use the same mechanic also have to go.

Restore Balance is pretty similar to Smallpox and given its lower casting cost it fits into a lot more decks than Smallpox does. (And its got to be hell to calculate as well)

4 v 13: Magma Mine goes off on turn 3. I drop Glacial Chasm on turn 2. (0-6)
13 v 14: My results show Choker+Reanimate racing Sky Swallower playing first or second.

Playing second, Smallpox puts us both at 19. (I discard Glacial Chasm.) Reanimate puts him at 12. I drop Choker. Choker puts him at 11. He attacks me down to 13. Choker puts me at 11. I play Crucible, Chasm. He takes 3, 5, and 7 while I take 2 and 4.

Playing first, I play Shop, Crucible. On my second turn, I play Choker. On my third turn, I play Glacial Chasm. No matter when he casts Smallpox, I win the race.

The reason that the Magma Mine deck beats you (I'm about to go to bed so I'll check the others tomorrow, though it looks right at the moment) is that it can create a lot of mana and use the mana to remove counters from Jinxed Choker; if it does that, you'll eventually have to sac the Chasm, at which stage the Mine goes boom.

Second decks are being accepted; more players' first decks would be even more welcome, though!

Hopefully they'll be up today...not sure what the great rush is, as unlike usual I'm not late with them yet...

Oh, sorry, I hadn't checked the date on the main post and assumed you asked for second decks because there weren't enough and the deadline had passed.
