So this weekend was possiblly the most Magic the Gathering intensive weekend of my entire life.  It started off Friday prize splitting in the finals at FNM as the last testing possible for states.  Then playing to a disapointing 5-2-1 Finish at States with my UR Snow control deck.  Then play testing and Type 4ing with Mastriano and Smennen at my appartment Saturday night.  And finally playing to a top four split on Sunday for the Black Lotus at the RIW tournament.

I think I slept 8 hours in three days, what a disaster.

Anyways, I wrecked face in type four I Bribery'd out Mr. Type 4's Glarecaster and cast starstrom for infi off a Boseiju.  Pwnd;  Shortly after listening to Smennen have the most annoying phone conversation to some girl who had drunk dialed him.  "Seriously? Seriously?  Seriously?  Really?  Really?  Really?  Seriously?  Are you drunk?  Are you drunk?  Are you Drunk?  Seriously?  Seriously?  Really?  Really?  Really?  Really/  Et Cetera"

-"Steve you need to leave the room, that is just awful to listen to"

Before states I was trading with some random guy and he comments on some of the type one cards in my collection.  And adds that he is the best Vintage player in the state.  I'm like "oh really?"  and he replies "If you've got a deck I'll pwn you, or something dumb like that showing off for his buds"  and I'm like "aight, I can throw something together"  I promptly make Burning Slaver and savage the hell out of him, to the glee of his friends who are laughing hysterically at his savage beating.  To hell with Gifts, I'm playing Burning Slaver tomorrow is all I'm thinking the whole time we are playing.

Here is the list I played

4 Thirst for Knowledge
4 Brainstorm
4 Force of Will
4 Mana Drain
3 Goblin Welder
1 Gorilla Shaman
1 Mindslaver
1 Triskellion1
1 Sundering Titan
1 Crucible of Worlds
1 Tormod's Crypt
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Time Walk
1 Tinker
1 Echoing truth
1 Chain of Vapor
1 Mystical Tutor
1 GIfts Ungiven
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Yawgmoths Wll
1 Burning WIsh
5 Mox
1 Lotus
1 Sol Ring
1 Mana Vault
1 Mana Crypt
1 Darksteel Citadel
1 Strip Mine
1 Tolerian Academy
2 Flooded Strand
2 Polluted Delta
2 Island
1 SC Island
3 Volcanic Island
2 Underground Sea

Sb
2  REB
1 Pyroblast
1 Pyroclasm
1 Stifle
1 SOlem Simmy
3 Duress
1 Fire Ice
1 Tendrils
1 Rack and Ruin
1 Shattering Spree
1 Deep Analysis
1 Hurkyls Recall

Round One

Jason Hall playing Bomerman

Game oneL

Is a really strange game for me because I don't really have much.  I keep a five land double force of wil hand on the draw.  He starts offa slow as well.  On my first draw I get a Shaman.  2nd a Drain and I end up hitting his mana really hard early.  Did I mention one of my lands was a Strip Mine?  I turn two drain a Salvager cast off two moxes and Drain into Shaman, Eat, Eat, and a topdecked Thirst.  Into not much stuff.  He plays a Trinket mage and and I force he forces back and gets a Pithing Needle.  I play Cow and Start in on his lands.  He needles my Shaman and commences with the beats.  I continue to draw the stone nothing.  Going to one life before I topdeck a Slaver and Slaver him with it.  He is holding Swords Tundra so I get his mage.  I untap and draw a Sundering Titan.  He Passes, I untap and Draw a Trike.  This game is over.

Game two:  I get the upper hand quickly with a fast Recall and Thirst, and gain a lot of tempo with a Reb on a mage with a Force for his force.  He untaps and plays Salvagers I drain it into Burning wish for Deep Analysis cast and flashed back.  He doesn't do anything on his turn and I tinker for a Titan and kill him with it.

1-0

Round 2 Phil Cape with Fishalos

Game one:  There is confusion over a Kataki trigger, I get a favorable Judge ruling, I was very close to punting this game.
Are you Drunk?  Are you Drunk? Are you Drunk?  Seriously?  Seriously?  Really?  I hold off his team with a Tinkered out Trike/  eventually find a Welder and cast it to kill his team.

Game 2:  I keep a very sketchy hand of:  Underground Sea, Pyroclasm, Sol Ring, Brainstorm, Brainstorm, Thirst, Trike, Force of Will

He goes land mox meddling mage, I force he forces back pitching Brainstorm.  He mages my Brainstorm.  He untaps hits me for two and plays a second mage naming thrist for knowledge.  I untap and Draw Ancestral Recall, Cast it play a volcanic Island and Pyroclasm.  GG.

2-0

Dirty Hairy playing UG Thresh

Game one, he plays a land and passes, I play Saphire and Island and pass.  He plays a mox and a land and a werebear and casts Werebear.  I don't have a third land drop, but I have thirst plus Robot, so I drain.  SPELLSNARE ME OMG.  I am annoyed.  I miss my land drop and pass.  He plays a land and Trygon Predator, I again attempt a Drain, SPELLSNARE ME WTF?  I draw and play Academy and pass.  He runs another first mainphase werebear, I attempt to drain and he SPELLSSNRESMEAVGAIN GRRRR.  Attacks and eats my saphre.  I untap and draw the best card in my deck.  Darksteel citadel which powers up academy and lives through predator and cast my thirst.  Hit the sauce, and immediately start setting up a yawgmoths will with gifts.  Two turns later I Slaver lock him after a large time walked will.

Game two:,

I don't remeber much about this game.  he had a predator, that I bounced twice So I could draw cards make land drops and hard cast a Sundering Idiot, with him unable to recast the predator

3-0

ROund four Slaver mirror

Game one is just a gigantic disaster.  My opponent plays a bunch of Moxes on the play and passes.  I Untap play a bunch of Moxes and a Shaman and eat his whole board, and follow it up with strip mine on the next turn.  He looks less that pleased.

Game two:  I should have definately lost this game.  I have a good counterspell hand and he plays LOA go, and starts working the cards.  I have no threats, but I do have a shaman so he can't really accelerate out very quickly.  I'm pretty much ready to shove it in, when he makes a startling play.  He has no red mana in play.  Lotus, Sac for red, Welder, with no artifacts in the grave.  I d rain it, He rebs, I Drain, he Rebs, I force he forces.  He blows his whole, dominant hand on a worthless one one.  I am in complete shock.    I cast the last card in my hand at the end of my turn and find Ancestral Recall, Yawgoths Will and Time Walk.  Its good to be me.  Mise.  I attack with the shaman, which he trades for the welder.  Recall which gets drained.  Walk, and cast Will.  Anhilaition/

4-0

Ray Kher playing UBW Fish

Game one: is a blow out in my favor.  I make a fast Trike and a Titan and kill him.  I joke that I'm not actually playing Slaver, since I've only actually activated Slavers in two of my first nine games.  ANd one was ripped off the top and hard cast.  My deck is actually a combo deck that puts Sundering Titan and Triskellion into play and bashes with them.

Game two:  He has strip double was and confidant and I have no moxes.  Boo.

Game three is the biggest blow out ever.  I play Undground sea and pass. He wastes it and I mystical for recall.  I play my Island and Recall he forces, I force back, he forces back.  I am out of cards.  He untaps and goes land mox BOB.  I am less than pleased with how this one turned out.  Dead on turn two.

4-1

ROund Six.  There is a mistake where somebody who was x1 got dropped because their opponent marked drop in the wrong side of the match slip.  SO i get paired down and can't draw in.  However, I'm going to be in at x2 anyways because my tie breaks are like 70 percent.  I kind of half ass the match and mulligan to nothing and lose.  but whatev.  we did it at seventh place.

TOP EIGHT

SNORELAX PLAYING STAX

Game one is really intense.  He has a turn one Welder and so do I.  He has a turn two Sundering Titan, I do not.  However, I have a bunch of Moxes and an Academy.  He plays a Null Rod.  Problem, I play a COW and take a bunch of damage to the nugg.  I end of turn bounce his welder and he makes some arbitrary weld. I get rid of his Null Rod.  I untap and replay my academy and pass.  He untaps and plays his welder and attacks for 7  I Thirst and Pitch a Trike, weld it in and shoot his welder.  He passes.  At the end of my turn I vamp for Darksteel Citadel and play it.  I now have and artifact I can play every turn off the Crucible to Chump his Titan and dome him for three.  He tries to play spells but they get countered and eventually I find a shaman and he scoops..

Game two

I mull to five on the draw.

Island, Ancestral Recall, Mox Sapphire, Mana Drain, Force of Will\
Really?  Reaally?  SeriouslY>  SeriouslY?  Are you Drunk?  Really?

OMG LIVING THE DREAM
My deck loves me

He plays a turn one Smokestack and I force of will it.  My turn I recall into a bunch of good cards, including Crucible of Worlds, Goblin Welder and Strip mine.  Did I mention the card I drew for the Turn was Mana Drain?  LOL  He untaps and plays a stack.  I draw a Mox play it cast Cow and Strip his workshop.  And its all downhill from there.  It may not have happened exactly like that.  BUt it was pretty damn stupid.  I kind of felt bad for mising like a fiend.  We should have proably played a game three.

Smennen, Arend, Ray Kher and I work out a split for the lotus in the top four

Props

Smennen and Paul, it was great to see you guys again.  You are more than welcome to stay at my apparment anytimre!Type four is awesome.  Starstrom ya

SLOPS

X1 pairdowns
cold pasta
Really?  Really?  seriously?  are you drunk phone calls?
losing a mana drain at the event

Kurt Fruth or Ray Kher, I lost a drain at somepoint when we were playing after the event.  You two were the only two people I played against, so I'm really hoping that one of you scooped it up with your cards when you left.
If either of you have it please email me and let me know at bdemars@umich.edu  thanks!

The event was a blast.  Thanks for Pam for putting it on, and for everybody for comming out and playing Vintage!

This was a very nice tournament. The skill level in vintage is by no means casual, but I don't feel the pressure to win in Vintage like I do if I'm at a PTQ, even if the prize is a Black Lotus.
And I feel your pain on the tiebreaker thing. Finishing 9th at this tourney after finishing 9th at states the day before was a tough pill to swallow.

Umm.... While it's no less unflattering, here's a more accurate portrayal of what happened: Game one you had  tinker which got countered, then lotus into will which didn't and got you titan, which blew up most of my lands. And all this before turn three. Off the will, you mystical-ed for drain. I also have a savage hand, with the option to tinker or cast yawgmoth's will, but you are holding that silly drain and I decide that I'll bait it with my yawgmoth's will, so that I can tinker up titan and wreck your board, leaving you with no cards in hand and no land, and me with four cards and a couple of land. Problem is, my titan was already in my graveyard from an earlier thirst. Bummer. Menendian and Demars both commented that had I reversed the order in which I baited, I probably could have won, and to some extent I agree, but I had nothing in the yard with which to deal with the almighty titan, so meh.

Yeah, game two was actually a little bit worse than you described, because I flat-out just panicked. I had an early thirst with slaver in the yard, and the LOA going. With shaman out, my hand was filling up fast with good stuff I was going to have to discard, and with you sitting on a tormod's crypt I didn't want to just throw my moxen out to be eaten up. The longer the crypt sat there, the more devastating it was going to be, so yeah, I blew my load on a welder and went aggressive when I had no business doing so. I switched roles WAY too soon. I figured that if I got the shaman out of action, then I would be able to drop my acceleration and draw some cards, bringing me back to seven. The plan did not go so well.

Congrats on your finish, though.

you are definately right, I remember now;  I got it confused with a game I played with a friend after the event.

Kurt and Ray... Did either of you guys accidently pick up my Mana Drain after the match?  I was short one.  I would be eternally thankful if you did!

Cheers

Hey Brian, I sent you an email about the mana drain. I checked my cards for any off color sleeves and didn't find any. It sucks that you are missing a card, I know what thats like. Hopefully someone found it in the play area, and can turn it in. As far as I know the people in there after the tourney were all regulars so I would like to think they would turn it in if they knew it was yours.
