I actually remember hearing about this before, except that I at the time I remember hearing that Michael Jackson owned the copyright; thank goodness that turns out not to be true.  I still contend that this is one of the silliest things ever.

He used to, along with all the songs by the beatles and various other things...

when he got sued for the eleventy billionth time and when he sued sony for the rights to his earlier music he sold them all to fuel the war effort.

Wasn't there an ATHF episode where Master Shake contracts Zakk Wylde to make a new happy birthday song.  I'm pretty sure his motivation was the royalties.

It was called Spirit Journey Formation Anniversary, and I think the life and death theme really captures the idea of a birthday.
