I would have posted this in General, but that is TMD Full User Only. This is Non-Magic, but needed.  Help from all TMD users appreciated.

I am visiting the parental units for Christmas (750 miles from home, sub optimal deck on MWS, Giant TV, the usual...)

My brother in-law bought some nifty X-mas gifts for his son Hayden:
A universal remote, and a keyboard!

The kid can have fun with the remote all day! and the keyboard? Bang away lil'buddy!
My sister broke her old cellphone, and it is now my neice's favorite toy (she is 15 months old.  She can't talk, but she knows what she likes).

I am stuck with family doing XMAS things, and the remote/keyboard/brokencellphone are all great ideas for the little newbs on the move.

Does anyone else have GOOD ideas for Xmas gifts for toddlers?

I don't even know what to get my parents.  They are retired.  They have a nice house, monthly checks and a big ass TV with TiVo. Uh, new stationary?

ADVICE for us all!

DISCLAIMER: I bought my neice a teddy bear type thing for her 1st birthday party.  It apparently is dangerous for 1 year olds. She is old now (15 months), but I still don't know what I am talking about.  The Remote/CellPhone/Keyboard thing are all winners.  Anyone else have some secret tricks?

Keys can break off keyboards and are the choke.

When was the last time you gave your parents a professionally-taken photograph of yourself? I'm doing that for my rents. It's something where I can look good, it's memorable, they can send it to relatives, etc.

The new Tickle Me Elmo is INSNA. Fun for ALL ages.

a buddy of mine got married when I was younger (22ish) and I was 3rd in line from Best Man. Photo With Tux. Done.

Oh, and my Army Basic Training Pic (US Soldier in Uniform hotter than Pink Sleeved MDGifts!)

I was asking about gifts for toddlers.

Mom can have DVD of Fiddler on the Roof or Titanic.
Dan gets golf balls.
My neice? My Nephew? clueless!!!

They already get remote, keyboard and cellphone. from Uncle/Sis.

What about Uncle LotusHead!

What ever you get, make sure it comes in a huge box. When I was a toddler I used to have more fun making forts out of the box than actually playing with the gift.

Along the keyboard idea, touch-tone phones make great gifts as well, and as a bonus, you can build yourself a battery pack for it that will let the phone actually make the tone sounds (extra fun for junior).

All you need is a 9-v battery, and to connect the red&green wires of a standard phone cable to pos&neg on the battery terminals respectively. Plug it in, and voila, dial away.

If you got really clever and were able to make the 160Hz AC wave that signals an incomming call, you could even make the phone ring. Smile

If they are kids of the brother/sister-in-law that you don't like, then get REALLY LOUD toys.  Drums and laser guns with whistles and what not.

If you like these kids, get them books.  Dolls or action figures of whatever show they watch is also key.

Phones are fun.  My 5 year old boy can say "gimme my verizon wireless phone" with absolute clarity.  Smile

Toddlers and other kids are usually the easiest, by far, to find gifts forin my opinion.  You must have a shopping disorder.

Books, books, and more books.  Seriously the best gift you can get anyone of any age.  Making little kids smarter is NEVER a bad decision.  I got my goddaughter books this year.  Come to think of it, I got everyone I bought presents for books this year...

Put together an imagination box for them. Get contruction paper, a glue stick, kid friendly scissors, sequins, crayons, washable markers, stuff like that. If they're talking, ask them to draw you a picture of christmas or their family or something. It's a great way to get kids' imaginations working early. Coloring books are another fine option. Anything that the child can interact with.

I stay away from obviously gendered gifts and stuff like guns and swords for kids, they don't need that stuff.

Um, I dunno about what you should get, but here's a handy list of what you * shouldn't*  get. Behold, the 10 most dangerous toys of all time:

http://www.radaronline.com/features/2006/12/toys.php

Get them LEGO. All of them. Yes, your parents, too. LEGO is still the best toy ever.

Hehehe I was just talking to someone about that list of 10 most dangerous toys. I really want to find some lawn darts for summertime.

And I concur with Bram regarding LEGO. Bionicle and Exo Force - BIG GIANT FIGHTING LEGO ROBOTS. Do it.
