There was a shooting today at my school, Virginia Tech, in which 22 people were killed. I wanted to let all of you know that I'm ok.  Please extend your thoughts and prayers to the wounded and the families and friends of the deceased.

I was just about to post this.  I'm glad to see you're ok Kelp, and I hope the rest of the TMD community with connections to VA Tech can say the same.  This is being described as the worst incident of campus violence in American history.

If the murderer wasn't a student, then technically 1927 had a worse incident.

Anyone else from VT should post in this thead to check in with us.

Im sure I speak for everyone when I say that our thoughts go out to everyone there, and we hope that you can find some sort of closure if at all possible.

Wow, I was just thinking today that there was probably someone in my town affected by this, whether it would be a friend of a friend, someone they know, or a family member, getting hurt.

I never knew that you went to that school, but it would have been terrible if you were hurt as well as the others.

I heard a different number from 22, more like 35 people were killed and more than 20 others were injured.

Are all of your friends okay?

My prayers and thoughts...

This is very sad. Klep, I'm glad to hear that you are safe. The students and their families are in my prayers.

The only thing worse than turning on the TV and finding out that 30 people got shot at a school, is finding out that more than 30 people got shot at a school.

I'm glad you're ok, Klep.  I'm still too mad about crazy gun-toting psycho's to let the true tradgedy sink in.

The final death toll seems to be 33, including the shooter.

As far as I know, no one I know was killed or injured, but they haven't yet released the names of the victims so I can't say for certain.

If the victims were random students, that indicates that the only reason you're alive is because the shooter chose a time and area of the school where you weren't situated. Yeah, it seems obvious, but that's a really scary thought. Good to hear you're ok.

Good to hear you are ok Klep. The phone circuits were busy whenever I tried to call.

See you Saturday.

A note of human goodness amidst the tragedy:

We regret to inform you of the passing of a Jewish professor at Virginia Tech yesterday. Professor Liviu Libresco - a 75-year old Jewish Romanian Israeli survivor of the Holocaust - blocked the door to the classroom with his body, sacrificing his life for those of his students.

It's things like this that shows to me that some people are still good in this world. A light of hope amongst all this sadness.

Klep, I hope that you find that those you care about are safe, and even though I don't know you it's still good to know that a TMD-er is safe.

I think the most surreal thing is when a complete stranger you meet at a tournament hears your name and goes "Oh, yeah. I've read your stuff." It's kind of weird, yet feels good all at the same time.

I try to not hate people, only the things they do.  This guy really comes close to breaking this rule.   My prayers go out to all of those affected by this tragedy.

Some videos of him between his killings that he sent to NBC news are now up on the web, like cnn.com.

Pretty disturbing stuff.

I've had some classes shut down this week because of this. One of my professors graduated from V-Tech and lost a friend. Condolences to everyone involved.

Everything I've read points to the shooter being messed up for a long time. The shooter's plays, for instance, are extremely disturbing. A number of warning signs were caught but not enough was done. At one point his family checked him into a mental health facility, but because it was self admission it didn't show up on the background check when he went to purchase a gun.
