Time:
Registration is from 8:30 AM to 9:50 AM. Tournament begins at 10:00 AM promptly.

Tournament Format:
Non-sanctioned Vintage, modified swiss with single-elimination top 8. Up to ten proxies are allowed.

Proxy Rules:
There are two types of acceptable proxies for use in the Star City Games Power 9 tournament series. The first and most basic is taking a basic land card and writing the details of the card on it. The second method is to take a card that shares some of the characteristics with the card that is being proxied and erase any characteristics that do not match, replacing them with the correct characteristics.

All proxies must have the following text neatly printed, using a extra fine point sharpie. Ball point pens may not be used:
•   The full name of the card (no abbreviations or nicknames)
•   Correct casting cost of the card including all colored mana symbols
•   All relevant/game effecting text

When choosing what card to use as the base for an erased proxy players must follow these rules:
•   The mana cost of the base spell must be the same as the card being proxied.
•   The type of the card being proxied must be the same as the base card.
•   The P/T of a creature being proxied must be the same as the base creature P/T
•   When proxying a creature it may be difficult to find a creature where all characteristics match. In this case, mana cost is the most important, followed by the P/T, followed by the subtype. Any characteristics that do not match must be erased and corrected.
•   The art box, card name, and text box must be totally erased. White out may not be used for this as it affects the stiffness of the card and may mark it.
•   When adding text to the card do not use a ball point pen. A extra fine point sharpie is the best thing to use. A ball point pen can cause indentations on the card marking it.
•   For clarity reasons, the use of cards with the new card frame is strongly encouraged

Examples:
•   Welding Jar or Spellbook can be used for a Mox or Black Lotus
•   Disarm could be used for an Ancestral Recall
•   Train of Thought for a Time Walk
•   Counsel of the Soratami for a Timetwister.

How to Erase a Card:
Acetone and a cotton ball or q-tip works well, as does a pencil/ink eraser (the white/grey split type) using the grey side. Before erasing the card, take masking tape and tape off all the areas that you don't want erased for a clean edge. It will take time, but it will come off.

Entry Fee:
$30.00 - Credit cards are not accepted at the event site. Anyone wishing to use a credit card to pay for their tournament entry must preregister. Please remember that preregistration closes on the Thursday before the event at 9:00 AM.

Cool 9-16th place prizes.  Unfortunately, I'm afraid it will only get 60 people tops because of the choice of location.  Why they haven't returned to the midwest where the most people show up, when there are multiple locations available besides Pastimes, is beyond me.

Its an awful long drive down to Roanoke Va for a one day event.  I hope to make this tournament.  I really hope that SCG decides to do some events in the Midwest over the summer.  There are a lot of players who would turn out from the Michigan, Ohio, Illonois area.

I think you may be forgetting that SCG has their own HUGE store, and they have no obligation at all to travel around the country to meet the needs of people whining on various forums. I think we should all be THANKFUL that SCG was kind enough to continue to hold Vintage events.

Was I whining?  I was stating that it is unfortunate that they will probably get a very low turnout--historically that is correct and I don't see why it wouldn't be here either.  I was also stating that the place which always had the largest amount of people was in the midwest.  If they only held events at their store, I would understand.  But when they still travel to the NE, but not to the spot where the most people show, confuses me.  I was not whining in any way--I was pointing out facts.  I am in no way putting down SCG or anything.  There is a reason they haven't returned to the midwest when there are venues open to them.  I'm sure there is.  I just don't have it and I haven't really heard of any others--which is why I said "its beyond me."

Just so everyone knows... we initially planned to run the first StarCityGames.com P9 tournament of 2007 at GP Columbus, but those plans fell through. We then looked at Chicago, but that didn't work out either. We then looked at Rochester, and ran into site availability issues. So...  rather than make players wait ANY longer, we went ahead and scheduled it at the one place we knew we could secure a usable site with no problems; our own Game Center.

We're still working on Chicago, and still working on Rochester, but as I said in my initial announcement...

"Additional locations will be announced shortly. However, if you know of a game store that can seat 150-200 players, and may be interested in hosting a Star City “Power Nine” Vintage Tournament, please contact me at outpost1@starcitygames.com to suggest a location!"

Hope to see everyone in Roanoke on June 16th!

It's good to hear that, but you should maybe have said that before... We (the Vintage community) could maybe have help you long before... People are really waiting about those for so long...

Anyway, I don't know, it may seems stupid, but if you hurry that may be a good idea...

23th and 24th of June there is the Montreal GP. They already planed to make a Vintage proxy side-event June 24th. I even gived them an Invitation for the CVQ (Quebec Vintage Championship, the league that is held in the province of Quebec from Vintage player). Anyway, prizes are still to be determined, bu the entry prize is announced at 30$...

I don't know why plans fell through for GP Colombus and I don't know if the TO of the GP Montreal could be interrested, but Northeaster Players would love it! It would attract a good bunch of players I'm sure... I know the TO, I will gives you details in my email.

Sure, that's only 1 week after this SCG, but anyway, that's not the necessairly the same crowld both tournaments would attract. Maybe I'm just a Fool, but hey... I can dream!  Very Happy

Good news for Roanoke events - the software to get the pairings displayed on the monitors is now working! No more crowding around with a bunch of other players to see who you are playing!

Getting to Roanoke isn't the problem.   Not only would I need a way back to Columbus from Roanoke (since I'm flying to DC), but it was too complicated procedurally to get from Columbus to DC to Roanoke to Columbus without having to create a huge office headache and deal with paperwork regarding reimbursements for "Personal flights" versus business travel, etc.   I appreciate the offers I've received from people by PM, but it's a moot point - I've got a flight scheduled to return from DC on Friday evening.   I hope everyone has a great time at the tournament and wish I was going as well.

Good luck, everyone!  Unfortunately (well, not really) I'll be at American Beer Fest in Boston this weekend, and unable to make it to the SCG.  I'll have one for everyone that can make it though!

Brassman is 2-0, about to be 3-0 it seems. He's playing Gifts.
Elias, piloting Bomberman, is 2-0
Demars is 2-0, playing Grim Long.
Kowal is playing Hulk-Sliver-Flash, and is 1-2.

Brian Demars and Paul Mastriano are both playing the Mean Deck, personalized within a few card slots.

Brian is 3-0 and last I heard paul was 2-0 and in his third match.

The Mean Deck was a deck we designed in February for the pre-Future Sight metagame, and in my opinion, is the clear best deck in the pre-Future Sight environment.  I will post it tonight, but it is unfortunate that the lack of high level support until now has forced us to postpone its debut for 4 months.

Paul M and Brian aren't playing a long variant.   The Long variants are focused around yawg will and run either wishes or Grim Tutors.
They are playing a deck we've been developing for the last 4 months.  I posted it in the open forum.
