Here's a mechanic that I orignally envisioned as a white mechanic called Rebirth; however, "death counter" didn't sound very white so it became a black mechanic called Reanimate.

Reanimate (You may play this card from your graveyard. If you do, it comes into play with a death counter on it. If this creature is put into a graveyard from play and has a death counter on it, remove it from the game.)

It is basically Flashback for creatures and is based on the Oracle wording for Bogardan Phoenix.

Undying Soldier
{B} {B}
Creature – Zombie Soldier
2/1
Plainswalk
Reanimate (You may play this card from your graveyard. If you do, it comes into play with a death counter on it. If this creature is put into a graveyard from play and has a death counter on it, remove it from the game.)

Current Wording:

Undying Soldier
{B} {B}
Creature – Zombie Soldier
2/1
Plainswalk
Reanimate {B} {B} (You may play this card from your graveyard for its Reanimate cost. If you do, it comes into play with a death counter on it. If this creature is put into a graveyard from play and has a death counter on it, remove it from the game.)

If it is based on Flashback, it should have a Reanimate cost.  Even if the first wave of cards all have the same Reanimate cost as their mana cost, it'll leave room open for future expansion of the idea.

Did you know that Red is the color or art and music and passion? Combine that with Green, the color of nature, spiritualism, and community and you get a hippie commune of drum circles, dreamcatchers, and recreational drug use. Let's see that win a Pro Tour.

I thought about adding a Reanimate cost, but I dismissed the idea initiallly. I guess it does make sense, even if it takes up more space on the card:

Might want to have it as "leaves play" instead of being put back into a graveyard, just to stop combo silliness.

You know what irks me the most?
That MaRo had the audacity to taint the good name of the Rakdos by including a justification for HoFLong in their article.

You think? Can you give me any examples?

I came up with another card:

Undying Councilor
{2} {B} {B}
Creature – Zombie Advisor
3/2
When Undying Councilor comes into play, you draw X cards and you lose X life, where X is the number of Zombies you control.
Reanimate {B} {B} {B} (You may play this card from your graveyard for its reanimate cost. If you do, it comes into play with a death counter on it. If this creature is put into a graveyard from play and has a death counter on it, remove it from the game.)

Do you think it's too similar to Graveborn Muse?

And another card:

Dead Rouser
{2}{B}
Creature – Wizard
2/2
{B}, {Tap}: Target creature card in your graveyard has reanimate until end of turn. Its reanimate cost becomes equal to its mana cost as you play it. (You may play that card from your graveyard for its reanimate cost. If you do, it comes into play with a death counter on it. If that creature is put into a graveyard from play and has a death counter on it, remove it from the game.)
