An announcement can be found here:  http://norcalmagic.proboards79.com/index.cgi?board=winners&action=display&thread=1185096546&page=1

19 People came to play at Adventures in Games.

The field was
GAT x 7 or so (I am guessing)
Sliver Flash x 3 or so
2 Stax
1 Sensei's
2 Mono Black
1 ReapLace
and a few I didn't see.

Top 8:
Webster (GAT) Vs Ricky (GAT) Ricky wins
Paul Gaither (Sui-Black) Vs LotusHead (Serum Domination) Paul wins
Michael Painter (5c Stax) vs Junior (Sliver Flash) Michael wins
Luis Scott-Vargas (GAT vs Mike Saroca (Sliver Flash) Luis Wins

Top 4
Ricky Vs Paul: They are teammates, so Ricky scoops to Paul for a prize split if all works out
Michael Vs Luis: Luis Wins in three intense games

Finals:
Luis vs Paul.
Game 1 ended badly for Luis
Game 2 ended badly for Paul
Game 3 ended badly for Luis

Paul wins his first ever piece of power! Congrats!

Austin and Junior get paired up round one. They ID and play for fun.

Round 2, Junior owns Sui-Black with SliverFlash

Daniel and ?Josh? get paired against each other. Bummer.

From what I hear, the dude on the right was playing ReapLace, but he also happens to be the guy that has that blank foil card I mentioned in the Pimp Thread on SCG.

I RFG Serum Powder's openning 7 and am rewarded with 2 Mox, 2 Pithing Needles, 1 Shop, 1 Trinisphere on the play.  The strength of my RFG'd 7 made Web mull to 5. Pithing Needle naming Strand. Pithing Needle naming Delta, Shop Trinisphere Go GG. Smile
But alas, Web won game 1 and 3.

ShoeBoxTony took this pic. Hey, that's me!

My field. and for the record, my playmat is more pimp than Web's. Suck on that! Smile

Jeff the Fob's Game Face

Michael Painter and his crappy ass proxies.

Erik Brown, armed with T2 decks and Block Decks had no idea there was a T1 tourney today. Doh!

Flash all you want Fob, I got a Trike on the field!
Our first game lasted literally one second after mulliganing decisions were made. Land, Mana Crypt Flash, Hulk scoop.
My Leylines slowed him down enough to not kill me games 2 and 3.   T.T <=- Fob crying Smile

Junior Pwned Daniel's BombermanSensor build with a NIX on BLACK LOTUS for Teh Win! (not this game, maybe I have a pic. More pics soon, and Lists will be posted by the event organizers.

Actual documented footage of Luis vs JefftheFob. Turns out it was a ruse. Fob decided to be a scoop monkey to Louis's GAT skills.

Death by Nix. Junior had Flash and Echoing Truth in hand.

That's uh, a Dystopia for the GAT Matchup!

Double Flux Bitch! and 4 Saproling tokens! Austin lost in the end on turn 4 of extra turns.

That's THREE Sphere of Resistances on the field.

Just how does Sui-Black win a tourney?  With these hands!

Don't worry, in the end, Paul picked Ancestral Recall.

This got Mulliganed. I'm no GAT player, but I thought that hand was alright. Luis? Care to explain? (Or Web on Luis's behalf?)

Luis just couldn't get a Tropical Island to stick. He had 2 Dryad's in hand for several turns, which could have been BIG by now.

My mini-report:

Austin and Junior had GAT and Flash in their possession, so I had to make a deck. I threw together Serum Domination (see Newb thread) and had a blast goldfishing it.

As I worked today until 1:30, had to pick up Junior and Austin 20 miles away in the opposite direction of the tourney, we were cutting it close to make the 3pm start time. Buy cutting it close, I mean we would be a solid 20 minutes late. I had Junior call to have them hold up for us, and Junior said if we are late we get a game loss. I had Austin call them up and Austin said they would give us a game loss for being late. I called them up and got them to just hold up the damn thing for 20 minutes.  The players would wait. I was sure of this. They agreed (after I gave them info on where I actually was).

Walking into the store, my real life sideboard was still the "Claw"'s sideboard (ghostly prisons, etc), and had to scramble to get SOMETHING in there I could cast.

Luckily, as everyone was already seated with opponents, the store was (presumably) unwilling to reset the matchups at the moment, so Austing Vs Junior, LotusHead=Bye. Whoot!

I made my SB not completely suck.  Props the the organizers for not giving us game losses.

Round 1: Bye

Round 2: Mono-Black by someone who didn't win the tourney.  The kid scooped to Smokestack abuse, but only was actually locked out in one of our two games.  As my Ruby got jacked last year, I need a Ruby, so I waited until after the matchup slip was signed to tell him what was up with Stax.  Stax wont win unless it wins.  If he waited out the Smokestack, I would be topdecking, and he would have 4 cards in hand, topdecking.
Go me.

Round 3: Ochoa.
Game 1 he kills me. He wins die roll, starts land Mox Mox, and in response to my play, casts Cunning Wish for Ancient Grudge because he has an Ancient Grudge about me killing him those first 5 or so matches.  It works.
Game 2 I kill him. See above pics.
Game 3 he kills me. He got Ancient Grudge in openning hand (perhaps that's why he kept it!) and I die.

Round 4: Jeff Huang (Jeffthefob) Flash Slivers.
He wins die roll, and after mulliganing decisians, game one is over within one second of time. (He knew I was playing SHops)
Game 2: I mull a leyline hand into a better leyline hand, which gets nerfed by that one free spell (reverent silence?), but I somehow get a Trike on the field. And a factory. Apparently, that is good enough.
Game 3: Leyline, bounced, wasteland recusrion on green, a smokestack/Sphere or something, and Jeff bolted himself 5 times in a row with his mana crypt (WHEW!!!!).

Round 5: ID with Paul

TOP 8! I played 2 matches so far! (not to be a jerk to my round 2 opponent, but he shouldn't have scooped so quick. I was at 4 to his 20 one game even. I know I am not afraid of the "Sui Black Matchup", but....

Paul Gaither vs Me. SHOP AGGRO vs SUI BLACK.
I mull a crap hand, I get a worse hand with Serum Powder, and Mull into somthing like my first hand without the Sol Ring in it.
I die (I don't remember this game, but I am sure it involed 2 Hymn's by turn 2. Maybe a Hippy)
Game 2: I Serum Mull into 7 that put Shop, Serum, Sol ring into play, followed by a Razormane Masticore in play next turn, with Trike and Random card in hand.
I die cuz I scrubbed and Paul didn't. (I had a SmokeStack with 3 counters, and I upped it to 4 when I shouldn't have, had Factory and Ancient tomb on field to block negator but did something else, etc)

I died.

For my top 8 performance, I won NOTHING (it's all good, I did win a door prize of a foil Tog)

Great report, but what I don't like to see is Moxen on Yu-Gi-Oh! playmats it just seems a little blasphemous.

Oh man, I had no idea this was going on... why didn't they announce it here on TMD?  I guess it's my own fault... ever since the NorCal Magic board went password-only, I've been too lazy to log in (your announcement link is broken, BTW).

Great pictures and report as usual.

The tourney organizer's didn't know how things work at TMD (ie, TMD loves tourney organizers and would love to let them post in their tourney anouncement forum. I kinda told them what the deal is).

They should have another tourney next month (Jet most likely).

Tag "fixed" until I remember how to clean it up.

lemme know if there are any other problems with the NorCal lind (in my sig) so I can figure out how to deal with it...

Other than "remembering your user name and password", I have no idea how the site works.

it is "seldom" used, but is used by me and others when T1 is floating around.

As usual, the picture report is nice.

As for the hand in the picture (Tropical Island, Sapphire, Timewalk, Gush, Cunning Wish, Oxidize, Yawgmoth's Will), it is sadly unkeepable. On the play, what does this hand do? You play land, mox, walk. Well, if you don't draw a land on turn 2, you can't cast a single spell. Even if you do draw a land, you are limited to casting wish and possibly setting up a Gush next turn. Overall, you really cannot keep a hand that relies on drawing a land just to have a play, and not a very good play at that. It does look nice though. (Top 3 cards were Volcanic, Merchant Scrollx2, so it would have worked out, although that doesn't matter.)

I guess my concern was the philosophy of keeping a hand that doesnt completely suck (your hand had 2 mana, a Time Walk and some other broken stuff, but no Force of Will..)

I am not scared of the Sui-Black matchup (even tho I lost to it also), does GAT need a better hand of 6 more than your "ok" hand of 7?

You have succeeded in many more formats of Magic than I have (Luis and Paul Cheon in our meta pwned their way onto the T2 Magic National Team, and Luis and Webster (David Ochoa) have won at least half of these Eudemonia (and this Adventures) tourneies overall by either lucksackery or just plain outplaying/outbuilding everyone).

For the record, while I am shocked at SuiBlack making top 2, much less winning, Paul played quite well, had good hands (as good as Sui Black gets) and there was zero combo (except flash and one sensei deck. The flash deck he faced killed him. His one loss), and didn't scrub out (like I have in this and many tourneys before this).

Again, congrats to Paul for piloting a deck that he believes in, and while his deck sucks (check my Who's laughing now sig for proof of my sincerity) he did win a beta ruby in the end with his deck (two top 4's in two tournies, possibly because we underestimated his skill at not sucking...)

Thanks Luis, for responding.

Actually there was another combo deck as well. He was playing Taiga's and Glimpse and Kobolds with the Squirrel Nest and Earthcraft possibly(never saw the Earthcraft). I don't think he fared to well as his deck was severely underpowered compared to the decks that floated around.

As for myself, I went 1-3 and dropped. No sense in finishing the 5th round (except maybe for some random prize). I did pull off a first game victory against LSV, my first opponent, although it was Necropotence that beat him. One game I Duressed him early to see 2x REB 2x FoW and some other goodies, although every blue spell I played after that was countered (REB) and my last chance hope of stealing his 4/4 Dryad for one blue mana (tried Mind Harness as SB tech) was met with a hardcasted FoW.

I'm not in any photo's except my Duelist lifecounter is visible in the "Jeff the Fob's game face" picture where he is PWNing me with an early (turn 2) Flash and my only hope is Brainstorm off my Fetch->Sea where I drew Force but he had backup as well I think. I did manage to drop E. Plague against him for Slivers (never drew my Leylines) but got pummeled by a hardcasted (off Lotus) Protean.

Nice pic's/report as usual ]_otushead. Hope to see you all at the Jet tourney, I might try my luck with another deck that has some pretty foils in it just for the sake of flashiness.

nice tournament report.

when your opponent just scooped to smokestack it just shows his ignorance about the format, which in my mind makes the games a little less fun.

are you going to post the top8 decklists by chance?

Yeah, it was kobold clamp and squirrel craft merged into one great deck, running no proxies,  power, search or storm.

 @ hiryu

The nor cal boards are dead pretty much...for various reasons which include but are not limited to me no longer playing magic and the board getting decimated by spammers.

 @ T1 in sacramento

amazing..19 people only for a beta ruby but still I am uber suprized adventures still gave out the prize they are usually cheap bastards there and rarely was a T1 in the past actually run properly and to their conclusion. Its also sad that I dont see Kevin in any of those shots and I wasnt their either, at least tony and eric made it out (even if eric didnt know T1 was going on). We had tried in the past to get that shop to advertise better (and I used to post about that shop on the nor cal sites and SCG and maybe once or twice here) but there was rarely any interest in tournaments there as prize support was generally only availible if large amounts turned out which never did.

Anyways..glad to see things actually happening in Sacramento, keep it up guys.

I did not know about this tournament and I'm a Eudo regular.  Aside from posting on the announcement forums on the drain, if NorCal folks could casually spread the word next time one of these is coming up that would be awesome.  I'd definitely attend these if I know about them.

It was posted on SCG tourney forums and the NorCal boards as well, twice. There's another announcement on the NorCal boards about the next one, for an Unl Jet. Here's the link, hope it works:

since it appears people are actually using the boards still (shows how much I pay attention) I am attempting to lift the "must log in" feature of the site so more people can view the forums of norcal.

IF the site gets spammed again please contact me at norcalmagic@hotmail.com or get ahold of LotusHead who also holds admin status now so we can delete the spam and put the log in feature back on

Was E there reppin his 5 color keeper from like 1996?

What about Kevin Tippelmen?

Those were the two guys I remember most about good old Avroms place. Wish I were back in Sac Town so I could mop up some fools in my old stomping grounds.

Peace
