Stephen Menendian, the Voice of Vintage, is currently proclaiming that GroAtog is the most powerful force in the Vintage metagame. Today, he enters a tournament in order to back up his lofty claims... and this article chronicles each game, play-by-play, as Stephen powers toward the Top 8. Did he make it? Read on to find out!

Steve, I'm not on SSG or I'd post there, but perhaps you'd share your thoughts on the Catalan meta in the SSG forums?  Obviously that meta is radically different from ours (e.g. its no-proxy, although I notice 6 of the top 8 decks are fully powered, with the UW fish deck playing the relevent moxen).

In his winning report, Miguel noted that "flash and GAT were all around", but attributed their lack of success to the fact that they weren't being played by the best players. Conversely, GATs success on this side of the pond is largely due to the fact that its the deck of choice of the best players (the playskill of the average GAT player is off the charts).

Could the Catalan decks, particularly Wette's (Miguel Ángel Díaz) first place Twist deck, compete in our meta if piloted by strong players? Its disruption suite certainly seems equipped to beat flash, but I'm less sure about its tools versus GAT.

Thoughts?

This is something I always wonder about when I look at european results as well.  I'm interested to hear Steve's thoughts, especially since I believe he's played in some events while traveling there.  What I've put together from observing lots of T8's over there and looking at how some dynamics play out in my local meta is the following:

When there's a large concentration of decks that attack the manabase (aka 'hate' decks like Fish and Stax), the strongest upper tier decks are those with high mana counts (slower combo control, TPS).  This type of meta would cause trouble for decks that run fewer than 20 sources and play lots of inexpensive spells (GAT, Flash, some storm combo).

In NE, increases in decks like TMWA, Goblins, Fish, etc right before Gift's restriction had a similar effect.  The slower, more resilient Bomberman became the strongest control deck.  Of course, one of it's worst matchups was Gifts and more efficient drain decks.

There is not a single argument in your post. Just statements that have no meaning. - Guli

I'm not sure what prompted the question of any banning since I haven't read the article, but it's definitely not appropriate for this thread.  It's not something we're really going to discuss other than it was behavior consistent with banning (see the rules thread).  Also consistent with our ban policy is applying to be unbanned, which is an option almost every user who has ever been banned has (unless it's a repeat ban).  Let's keep this thread on track please.

thanks!

Catalonia is not Italy, it is in Spain. Barcelona is there, and Badalona is in his metrpolitan area.
