Hello again.  I meant to get this up earlier but when you don't sleep for 2 days that usually means you have to sleep for 2 to make up the time.  I probably slept closer to 3 days... I'm such a bum :p

Anyway, 48 people showed up to support my first tourney.  This meant 6 rounds of swiss.  Thankfully I had sanctioned level 2 judge and store local Matt D'Matteo (Demo)
as my primary judge.  I was able to bump up prizes ALOT based on this turnout and people seemed very receptive to the prizes.  What were they?  Read on :p

After 6 Rounds of swiss the final standings were:

1) Justin Bransfield                      14 points
2) Tim Landale                           14 points
3) Rob D'Alfonso                        14 points
4) Dan Yarrington                       13 points
5) Josh Lale                               13 points
6) Ross Merriam                         13 points
7) Matt Mc Nally                         13 points
8) Nate Pease                           13 points
9) Andrew Fox                          13 points
10) John Lessard                       12 points
11) Joe Bernier                         12 points
12) Justin Brinne                       12 points
13) Bill Copes                            12 points
14) Brenden Boyle                     10
15) Douglas Pimm                      10
16) Brennon Bell                        10
17) James Hangley
18) Stefan LOL ROFLZ (as entered in computer)
19) Brandon Lepage
20) Devon Blau
21) Michael Lovett
22) Sara Yarrington
23) Craig Dupre
24) Ryan Marek
25) Taylor Pratt
26) Sean Orcutt
27) Ryan Bourgoin
28) Arik Pogrebinsky
29) Dan Joskiewich
30) Glen Ringuette

31-48 dropped by this point but most were still hanging around Smile

Andrew got 9th on tiebreakers so I upped his prize from 3 packs to a DCI foil textless WOG.

In the top 8-

Justin vs. Nate (W)

Josh Lale vs. Dan Yarrington (W)

Rob D'Alfonso (W) vs. Ross Merriam

Matt McNally (W) vs. Tim Landale

Justin chose as his top 8 prize the DCI promo package of a DCI Textless foil wrath AND mystery pack.  He quickly opened the infamous mystery pack getting 3 textless recollects, 2 cruel edict, lightning helix, mortify, condemn, pyroclasm and psionic blast.  Pretty good mystery pack if you ask me.

Tim Landale was next up choosing 2 Orim's Chants as his top 8 prize

Josh Lale had to leave early to catch his ferry back to Long Island and took 3 Windswept Heath as his top 8 prize (thanks for coming from so far away!)

and Ross Merriam took 2 Jitte as his top 8 prize

Yeah, my goody table had goodies =)  I also said the more people, the more goodies... so all goodies were doubled.  I would not have been able to double those prizes if it were not for the dedication of players who came from close and far to make this tourney.  Thanks again.

Anwyay, back to... TOP 4!

Dan Yarrington Vs. Nate Pease

Nate Wins in two games although Dan almost pulled out an impressive game two after mulling to four.  Sadly for him Nate had snapback for magus of the moon.

Matt McNally vs. Rob D'Alfonso

Matt won in 2 games.  Rob appeared to have lackluster draws but took the loss in stride.

Rob took 4 plateau as his top 4 prize and Dan chose Underground Sea + Polluted Delta

Nate and Matt split 1st/2nd place which included the mox... but not before I took a photo of them with it!

Speaking of photos... they aren't here yet :p  I'll get them up as soon as I can.

9th on tiebreaks was Andrew Fox /w a Mountains Variant.  If he'd like to post it he's more than welcome to do so =)

So out of a possible 32 Merchant Scrolls in top 8 there were 'only' 15, which is just under 50 percent.  Not as much as I expected but my thoughts on scroll haven't changed: Restrict plz :p

Overall the tourney was fantastic with very few hiccups.  That can be mainly attributed to my staff and the store for helping me out SO MUCH throughout the course of the day.  There will certainly be another tourney at some point probably late September with hopefully the same location and turnout =)
The free food thing was a little bit more than I bargained for and I probably won't do that again, but I like to set the benchmark for myself high each time to it's looking like $800 in GUARANTEED prizes for my next tourney.  I need roughly 40 people to break even off that structure, but I feel I can get that many (and would boost prizes past 40 =) especially considering there were many locals who didn't attend due to Myriad being the same weekend.  I still thoroughly enjoyed running back to back with Myriad and feel that their getting 42 and me getting 48 was no coincidence.  I would love to run side-by-side with them and other tourneys in the future, as I plan to keep my tourneys on Sundays.

I'll post an official announcement on my next tournament sometime next week hopefully.  I plan to do additional prizes for the next tourney that include best tournament report and... highest placing fish deck :p

Not really anything else to say other than thank you for about the 50th time to all those who came.  It meant alot to me and I honestly didn't think I'd get this many people for my first tourney.  I'll basically keep doing these as long as the interest is there.  It takes a long time for me to setup each tourney but you guys make it worth it and I can't thank you enough.

Pics coming up soon.  Cya later.

- Dave Feinstein =)

Hey, Dave.
For your first tournament, it was very well organized,
especially considering the Pokemon Pre-release in the same store.
I had a good time.

A quick tournament report for you. :p

This is the deck I played:

MJWA

Maindeck:

4 Dark Confidant
4 Aven Mindcensor
4 Glowrider
4 Mesmeric Fiend
3 Joten Grunt
4 Duress
3 Shadow of Doubt
4 Hymn to Tourach
4 Dark Ritual
4 Swords to Plowshares
2 Scrubland
1 Swamp
4 Bloodstained Mire
4 Caves of Koilos
4 Wasteland
1 Strip Mine
1 Black Lotus
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Emerald

Sideboard:

3 Gathan Raiders
4 Yixlid Jailer
4 Kataki, War's Wage
1 Shadow of Doubt
3 Diabolic Edict

Prologue:

I wake up the morning after the Myriad Tourney from another crazy dream
to the sound of my alarm clock. It's seven o'clock.
I've been asleep for only six and a half hours, which is below my normal amount of 8.34 hours per night.
It's going to be a long day.

I get up, shower, dress myself, and eat some cereal; shaken, not stirred.
I make myself a ham sandwich and take apples from the backyard for the car ride down.
My house has been invaded by fleas, so, I'm careful not to let any of them find me.
Dan and Sarah arrive and we begin our travels.

On our way to Myriad, we discuss Dan's deck choice for the tourney: Goblins with maindeck Duress.
After some deliberation and some last minute deckbuilding at Myriad we create a Vintage Rakdos deck.
Dan is pleased with the prospect of turning Jagged Poppet sideways.

Chapter 1: The Tournament

Upon arriving at the tournament site, I go about making the final changes to my decklist.
I am torn between three maindeck Gathan Raiders and three maindeck Shadow of Doubt.
After much deliberation, I decide to religate the Raiders to the side in favor of the Shadows.

While finishing my new sideboard, I hit a snag on what last four cards I shall insert.
Ryan Marek is nice enough to give me four Yixlid Jailers.
After submitting my decklist, the pairings are announced.

Chapter 2: Goblins!!!

I am paired up against Lloyd first round.
I assume he is playing the Goblin deck he top-eighted with at Myriad the day before.
I feel this does not bode well for me. Goblins is a scary matchup pre-board.

Game one I am very lucky.
Lloyd opens with a Mountain and a Sol Ring.
I have a Strip Mine for the Mountain, and he does not have another red source in hand.
Lloyd Wastelands my next land, and we are both pressed for mana,
but I manage to draw land and start developing my board first.
After some beatings from my troops, Lloyd finds a basic Mountain and casts a Goblin Matron,
which I respond to with Shadow of Doubt.

I continue beatings with Grunts and Mindcensors
while I drop Mesmeric Fiends to take care of his more immediate threats.
My gambit is to stop the smaller goblins to slow the rush; I am surely the beatdown in this matchup.
Unfortunately for me, Lloyd draws more red sources
and amasses a horde quick enough to alpha strike me down with two life left.

I sideboard out all my Duresses, Hymns, Shadows, and all but one Dark Ritual.
I sideboard in everything but Shadow of Doubt.
Enter conversional sideboard: Men.dec.

Game two I lay a beater or kill a creature every turn.
Pyrokenisis slows down my rush and Lloyd gets out a Siege Gang.
He takes me to one life the turn before he dies to a Mindcensor.

Game three is very one sided.
Lloyd doesn't have an explosive draw
and I draw enough creatures and disruption to control the board.

At one point in the game,
there is a game state error.
Two turns after beating with one Grunt,
Lloyd says that he had meant to block the Grunt and not the Confidant two turns ago.
At the time of blockers, I had thought that blocking Confidant was a superior move,
so it was possible that I had misinterpretted him.
I guess he misinterpretted me, too,
since he hadn't said anything about it at or since that combat step.

The judge is called.
The judge decides to keep the gamestate the same,
since the combat had been two turns ago.
Lloyd is a good sport about the judge call.
Grunt goes the distance, and I wish him luck.

Chapter 3: Slaver?!

My next opponent is Dan, playing a deck resembling Control-Slaver with heavy black.
Both games my deck hands me serious righteousness.
I Duress, Hymn, and Wasteland my way to Christmasland.

Chapter 4: Yes, the Mountains Win Again.

I had done some scouting at the end of the previous round,
but I wasn't sure what Brendan was playing.

We begin the game with Brendan going first.
Low and behold, Brendan is playing his version of W/r TMWA!
This is bad news for me, because this of all things is truly a nightmare matchup.
Brendan drops an early Magus of the Moon and a Glowrider and it's on to game two.

This game I mulligan into a risky hand on one mana source.
Luckily for me, Brendan's hand is much less explosives this game.
I Swords an early Magus of the Moon by floating mana,
and I draw mana to start casting more beaters.

However, W/r TMWA has too many major threats for me to handle.
I am forced to deal with Brendan's Windborn Muse,
only to face down a Jitte equipped Mindcensor.

We wish each other luck.
I'm am consoled that I at least lost to TMWA.

Chapter 5: Combo!

I am paired with Micah, who I believe is playing combo.
Both games my deck loves me.
I am handed enough Hymns, Fiends, and Wastelands to control Micah's hand and mana.
Grunts show up right when I need them.
Micah is cut just short of comboing out both games.

Chapter 6: Oath!!!

I do not know what John is playing.
I cast Fiend game one and see that he's playing Forces, Stripmine, Deltas, and Chalice.
He gets out a Mishra's Factory, too.
However, John doesn't draw much and I kill him, thinking he might be U/B Control.

Game two I am completely destroyed.
John gets a first turn Oath, Orchard, with a Chalice at zero and a Wasteland.
My Lotus in hand is taken out and my only mana source is destroyed.
I finally see John's deck when he triggers the Oath to get Akroma.
Drains, Wastelands, Chalices, Oaths, Duresses... Why... He's playing Oath!

This is very scary for me, as I haven't brought my anti-Oath tech.
My only hope is to sideboard in Katakis and hope to race.

Game three I land an early Fiend, and take the Oath in his hand.
He has an Orchard, an Ancestral, a Demonic, and a Delta.
It doesn't look good for me at all. My only hope is to beat face.
I cast Confidant and Grunt while he draws cards and tutors.
John drops an Engineered Explosives on two and clears my board the following turn.
I drop a Mindcensor at the end of his turn.
I have a couple Orchard tokens at this point, so my beaters are numerous when I drop a Confidant.
John activates the Oath from the Fiend and gets an Akroma.
However, I have fatal damage on the board with Edict backup in hand.
John thinks for a while, and decides to Vampiric.
I remind him that he can only search the top four cards.
He had forgotten, and I scrape by.
This was a very close match.

Chapter 7: Drawing...

I am paired with Matt. My initial instinct is to draw.
However, Dan informs me that I have bad tiebreakers
and that there's a chance that I'll be bumped out of top eight
if Nate Pease wins his match.
He is paired against Stax, an unfavorable matchup.
So, I figure that my chances of winning against Matt are a toss up,
whereas the chances of Nate winning his match and having betters tiebreakers is more than one toss up.

I decide to draw.

After a long match that extends into time, Nate loses to Stax.
However, his opponent cannot make top eight, so he concedes to Nate to give him a shot.
I end up in nineth on tiebreakers by 1.83 percent.
Them's the breaks.

I'm coming to the next one if Dave Feinstein wins the next Blue Bell.

I don't win tourneys... you know this :p

A couple of things I wanted to mention but I forgot-

Please let me know if you felt there were things that could be done better.  I enjoy feedback.  Please don't list the pokemon tourney as one of them though :p

That kind of got thrown on me 2 days before the event and there wasn't really anything I could do about it.  I thank you for not using the poke-kids as soccer balls. It helps that the store is freaking huge but even better for me personally was that I am good friends with the Poke-organizer, Judy Shea.  I have worked for her husband Tom Shea before and although sharing a tourney wasn't exactly optimal, if I'm forced to share tourney space the Sheas are who I would want to work with. Judy was very gracious...  I don't know how she puts up with those damn kids though.  :p

Also thanks to Joe Bernier for volunteering to table judge the top 8 for me.  Being a sick-Feinstein, it was an offer I couldn't refuse.

Also sorry to Ada- er Andrew :p  Fixed thy name.

Still working on putting up pics, I got a ton.  Thanks again.

Very nice results with interesting card choices.
Dan, you are my favorite deckbuilder. Jagged Poppet FTW!  Wink

Tim's decklist misses a card.

what dashing young man could ever have recomended flickr for those amazing photos! Much props should be given for that unammed Hero.

Wow, this seems like an amazing event for a first time out. I'd like to make it down at some point in time, although I have to admit the 4+ish hours is daunting.

Despite me going 0-3 drop, I had a great time. The 3 hour drive that some of us Long Islanders did was easy despite the traffic on the way home. I'm so glad I wasn't driving and slept through it.

I haev a first turn Llanowar Elf. He casts Ancestral, a slightly stronger card from the same set.

Feinstein's First Flyier! So far so good!

That's a lot of people in a nice looking store! To bad I don't know who any of them are so I can't comment on them!

The trick is to take lots of pics.  Sometimes the flash works, sometimes it doesn't, but this is doable!

Who are these people? Smile

People just got used to me taking pics.

Two Magus enter, one Magus leaves.

So this is TimLandale

Top 4 Rob D'Afonso

Nate Pease vs Dan Yarrington.

Ross and Justin of Team TPS

Josh with "The Volcanic Islands Win Again?"

Anyone who wants a detailed PM on how to do this stuff (photos) just drop me a line (Feinstein included). Perhaps I will write a primer in pimping out your tourney threads.

Feinstein: Hope you enjoyed this approach to pics!

Dave im sorry I couldn't make your first tournament, in all honesty, I overslept at my friends house.  However I do solemnly swear that at your next tournament I will be in attendance, no matter what.  From what I've heard it was a very well run tournament, and I am sorry I missed it.  I guess my team didn't really need me there though, they kinda cleaned up a bit...

It's ok Gagooch, I forgive you :p

Your team did indeed clean up.  Congrats to TPS for putting 3 people in top 8, also to GG for putting 2 in top 8.  Forgot to congratulate those teams earlier.

I know that you'd be traveling pretty far to get here, and it dawned on me that about 50% of the people at my last tourney traveled over 2 hours to be there.  I am brainstorming on things I can do to thank people for that kind of support, but for the time being I'm going to do a free side tournament in addition to everything else.  First 8 people who drop get to play in single elim tourney for a volcanic island, and that will turn into 2 volcs if over 40 people attend =)

I want to make this tourney even more enjoyable for people and am still trying to think of things to do that.  Again if anyone wants to leave suggestions of things they'd like to see, let me know.  I decided to do the free side tourney because people asked for a side tourney last time.  The only reason I didn't do one the first time around was because I honestly didn't expct that many people to show up the first time around.

I will have a full rundown of updates for my tourney in the near future.  Here's a link to the announcement:

Thank you again for all the kind, kind words and your support.  See you all on October 7th.

After reading about this tournament im kicking myself for not going.. or rather, kicking outlaw. We wanted to attend your first event but last minute troutlaw decided he wasnt up for magic and decided not to go.

the turnout was better than most regular mox tournys and i dont think ill miss the next one.
