Got a favorite movie that you never ever get tired of? I'm pretty sure that most of us have seen Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, etc, but what are the hidden gems out there that are just awesome? My pic to start things off: The House of Flying Daggers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HN9tXVXOdBQ for trailer I'm not that much of a kung fu kinda guy, and I couldn't care less about anime, but this movie simply takes my breath away every time I see it. The individual characters have so many layers to their acting skills that it takes several viewings to peel them away. I forced my students to watch this in the post-standardized test times, and they all complained about subtitles, until a plot twist happens. or a fight scene, or some other bit of drama, then they all get invested in the film, and they HAVE TO KNOW what happens. Truly spectacular, if you haven't seen it yet. (Hero, from same filmmaker was great also, I thought this was better.) Well? Whatcha got? |

there is no movie that never gets old. I used to think Terminator 2 would never get old. Ive seen it probably 40 times. it got old. still my all time favorite, but I dont foresee the inclination to ever see it again.

Hmm used to think the matrix and fight club never would get old...but after watching both at least 50 times each i got a bit bored with them and rarely watch them any more...
Closest might be:
Raiders of the lost ark
Terminator 1
...oh and maybe forest gump

So I got that going for me, which is nice... I've seen The Blues Brothers over 100 times, it's still amazing. I could watch The Mummy, The Mummy Returns and National Treasure a whole lotta times. I don't know what it is about them, but I like em a lot. Mallrats has a hard time getting old to me. |

Back to the Future. That movie never gets old to me. Wich is sort of ironic, because Harlan Ellison writes most of my favorite short stories.
For whatever reason, Star Trek VI never wears on me either. At the very least, I'd take it over just about any TNG movie since there was exactly one good one (and it was teeming with canonical inaccuracies, blargg).
The first Alien is really good too. 75% of that dialogue is improvised and it just astounds me that we can't find people with that kind of talent any more.
Just so I don't seem like a complete sci fi geek, I'll close my list with High Fidelity. One of those chick flicks in disguise that men are allowed to enjoy, heh. Jack Black before he was Jack Black? Golden.

Good call. The only issue I have with that movie is Catherine Zeta-Jones' character, Charlie. She's extremely annoying to me. Oh, and I'm not a big fan of Tim Robbins' character, either, which is surprising, because I enjoy most of his work. Speaking of which, The Shawshank Redemption. |

I always watch these when i get sick, and they never disappoint or get old.
This is sort of a weird criteria for a movie list, as it isn't the best movies ever made or ones you enjoyed but just movies you can watch over and over, so it's a really subjective thing, we are probably going to see a lot of weirdness and disagreement.

Also seconded on Python, Brooks, and Lewbowski.
I have to disagree with shawshank, I definitely saw that way too many times cause my old roommate thought it was like the greatest thing ever and watched it like 3 times a week. I didn't watch it that many times but it was always on in the background, and it eventually drove me nuts. I got old for me.

I'm sure I could watch Evil Dead 3 every week. Its probably the movie I've watched the most. After this one, Aliens, Starship Troopers are great too !

However, movies I can watch more than once without getting bored include:
Blues Brothers
Star Trek IV
Airplane!
Any Mel Brooks Movie
Army of Darkness
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (to a point, and also barring people quoting along with the entire movie)

Starship Troopers are great too !
Starship Troopers is one film that truly suprised me in it's Staying Power. The previews at the time just said "This film HAS to suck! Beverly Hills 90210 in spaaaaaace! L.A. Confidential is another truly great flick that only gets better every time I watch it. The only Kubrickish film of the last 10 years. |

I honestly hated Starship Troopers the first few times I saw it. It is possibly the worst acted movie I've ever seen, and I have grown to automatically dislike any movie starring any person from it.
As I got a little older, I started to hate it less as I realized it was (hopefully) intended as more than just a terrible sci-fi movie, but I still don't like it. I mean, come on, my cat is a better actor than Casper van Dien or whatever his name is.

I think I've seen Cool Hand Luke and Wallstreet over 50 times each--I can't ever get enough of either of those. I've seen Brick a lot too; I sit and watch it again and again with different friends, as hardly anyone has seen it.

I have also seen the original SW trilogy what I can only estimate to be hundreds of times. There was a period of time in like junior high where I probably watched each of them once a week, and I've been building the count up since I was five years old. In my own defense, I usually am doing something else while watching it (most frequently sorting Magic cards or putting together decks).
