Ok, hopefully the moderators don't mind this kind of different topic, but I wanted to bring it up.

I'm not sure the last time I saw a set with some of the best, but also some of the worst artwork in a magic set.  I won't mention any specific cards so I don't offend anyone, but wow, I thought I was looking at some cards from Alliances era.

I know this really has no effect on anything with the game, but I have always been a fan of the better artwork in magic.

Just curious if anyone else feels the same about this set??

I haven't seen many high-resolution images besides what they've shown us on magicthegathering.com.  I am pretty happy with what I've seen.  I'll have to wait until I actually gets some cards in my hands to make a decision, though.  The actual product is always the final testament to the production values.

Did you know that Red is the color or art and music and passion? Combine that with Green, the color of nature, spiritualism, and community and you get a hippie commune of drum circles, dreamcatchers, and recreational drug use. Let's see that win a Pro Tour.

It's certainly a mixed bag. At least, there seem to be more styles used than usual. Tarfire anyone? That looks like it could be something from the Ice Age era. I don't mind it, but some people think it's the worst piece of art ever. Frankly, I haven't minded any artwork since Torment. That entire block had some of the worst art ever used on a Magic card. I distinctly remember ripping Angel of Retribution and nearly weeping for what had been lost. Not only is it pixilated quite badly, but the shading was done so poorly that it looks like she's got a beard. GG. Everything since then, no matter how bad, has been "oh well, still better than Torment."

I have only seen the artwork that is on Salvation.  Of those, I have to give props to: Neck Snap, Broken Ambitions, Dread, Lilian Vess, and Chandra Nalaar.  I also like the look of Gaddock Teeg, although it doesn't really jump out at you.

And of course and honorable mention for the "nothing but leaves" wearing Woodland Changeling.

The rest of the artwork I have seen though is either very boring, or down right awful, IMO.

Why did Torment have that grainy, shit-ass pixel thing going on anyway?

Some of the art is outright awful, but really from what I've seen it that only seems like a slightly higher percentage than other sets. The other thing is when i'm looking at the art is I always ask myself, 'well did it get the general concept across and just it doesn't look good? or does it totally fail?'. That usually helps split the outright awful cards from cards I just happen to not like from personal taste.

Vegeta;
That is a good point.  Many of the pics that I think are pretty awful, do closely match what they are supposed to be.  I just think they look bad.

I like variety in art styles. I dont like enforced homogenization of magics visuals. look at the good old days running the gamut of foglio cartoons, amy weber surrealism, ferguson watercolors, mark poole storybook illustrations, diterlizzi muppets, hildebrandt stiff realism, and totally off the wall stuff like Stasis and Hell's caretaker. As a whole the quality was undeniably lower in the early days, but I wouldnt mind seeing more eclectic, yet more talented artists.

Well put!   Vroman the art critic!   Doug Linn would be proud!

I'm a big fan of the Dark artwise, but I have noticed some improvements in Lorywn.

DID SOMEONE SAY MY NAME?!?!

I haven't had a chance to look at all the art but most of it is unimpressive. Look at Arcana this week about how many pictures show faeries tricking giants. Oooh, lots of new territory there...

In any case, expect a write-up from me on it.

I'm disappointed by the lack of Foglios in the block. Their art style is comic and yet well-detailed. They have some amazing art; Killer Bees is one of my all-time favorite Magic cards. In fact, I can't think of a better way to convey the new Goblins theme than with some Foglio art. Heck, the Goblins even include a "court jester." Why didn't they get some pieces in this set?

Variety is fine; Lorwyn's art just isn't my style. Most of the images are all goofy-lookin' and cartoony.

My favorites are Ashling's Prerogative, Eyes of the Wisent, Jace Beleren, and Nath's Elite. They have a... crispness (maybe not the right word). I tend to like the art that has a CGIish quality; I'm totally lacking in artistic vocabulary though, so I don't know how to express it. I just know Lorwyn ain't it, for the most part.

The kithkin has the same cartoonish look as the Gnome's from World of warcraft - And i hate the way newer blizzard games looks..Way too cartoonish, i have a hard time taking it seriously.

The art just seems so...not-magic to me...Hopefully it's not a sign of things to come.

Even if you dislike most of the artwork in the set, have a look at today's Magic Arcana.  It is further proof that Rebecca Guay is absolutely amazing.

The thing that really annoys me about today's arcana is that I can only see the horse now.  I can't let it fade back into the scenery.

I got that too.  It's like that stupid arrow in the FedEx logo.  I can't even type out "FedEx" without noticing it.
